Edited by: Unity Love on 24/08/2008 21:19:11 Just saw it for the second time on BBC.2
Did this make anyone feel fantastically sad? In all honesty I was finding it hard to watch the end 15 or so minutes for the deep emotional suspense.
Then again I did cry a little in Anchor Man when the dog got kicked off the bridge...
So what does everyone else think about this movie? Sure it did drag on, but in the end I've found myself absolutely loving this film.
Edit: I'm depressed now and even more horrifically it's made me think :(

Yeah it's a decent enough film, but I'd have loved to see how it would have turned out directed by Stanley Kubrick. _______________________________________

It seems to me though that Spielberg has merged the darkness of Kubrick with his own mushy emotional stuff.

Having done a 5/10 minute talk, 5k word essay and numerous 1000 word essays, and seeing the film about 20 times in a week, (Yet STILL forgetting half of it j/k) i think its a great film, and if one more person asks me how i would describe its inner meaning, i'll cut out their brain and feed it to their best friend/worst enemy (delete as appropriate)
It is a great film, though.

That was a very depressing ending, yet oddly filling. One of the few movies I cried at the end of. A very good and interesting film in my opinion. -------------------------------------------------- Everyone is born right handed, only the great over come it.

Just saw the end of it on BBC 2. The end is typical Spielberg, bloody awful mush. The rest of the film looked okay from what I saw though.

I felt like the movie dragged for some time after awhile to the point I honestly didnt care what happened to the child robot. It did ask some interesting questions though. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Ah... I found it a bit like a Disney cartoon tbh.
Maybe it was because it was a robot I was being expected to empathise with, maybe because the whole film was about as subtle as a kick in the nuts. Who knows.

Easy: the adorable robot boy gets turned into a cold, calculating murderous AI construct, who has holed up in the ruins of the fallen human civilization, recruiting a cult of followers. The scientist played by William Hurt is sent to infiltrate the robot compound and kill the rampant AI. Everyone does tons of acid and loses their minds.

It was a kind of cross between I-Robot and Wall-E.

The movie was great up until the point that Kubrick up and died and it was taken over by Speilberg who turned it into his schmatlzy brand of sacchrine movie crap. The end was awful and I do wish that Kubruck had been able to see the project through and make it truly great and wonderful to watch.

Well, i really like A.I., but I'd never cry watching it, only scene in a movie i ever found to give me a weird feeling was when the german in Saving Private Ryan killed that G.I. by sticking a knife into his heart...
And honestly, are you kidding? How could the bridge scene in Anchorman make you cry? It's neighter that funny nor is it sad at all.

I thought this film was really terrible. It just felt like it was trying to be all emotional and meaningful without actually putting the work in and having a good plot/story.

Hell with the kid, he got what he wanted. The teddy bear got shafted. All alone in eternity (except the aliens of course). But then again he wasn't advanced and just went about his subroutines forever and ever probably without any thought. Sad movie, but it didn't grab me like I thought it would.
Someone needs to hurry up and make Foundation or Ringworld.....now those will be great to see on screen.

It made me feel dirty and evil.
The movie quite clearly depicted the most obvious end result should we ever create a truly viable artificial intelligence.

No they won't, not Foundation anyway. Ringworld maybe, has plenty of great comedy, dunno if it would translate to the screen though.

Not entirely correct since I-Robot was an adaptation of Isaac Asimovs story. In effect, it came long before AI. I remember reading I-Robot over 30 years ago. Wall-E is a modern film but the story dates back a very long time, not quite the same (a fair amount of artistic license), but enough similarities to another film I remember from the late 70's and also based on an Asimov story, if I could just remember the title
Edit: AI made reference to an Asimov quote. "The Frankenstein complex" which is an easy way to describe the human fear of anything that resembles intelligence brought to life by humans. IE: Frankensteins monster.
