Edited by: Adare Schmidt on 09/08/2008 09:14:29 Basically meaning, I want to be able to run two or more instances of E--*ahem*, a game without getting problems with lag. I'm not a techie, I only use computers, I don't know how they work, only that they do.
So, how would I achieve the desired result? Faster Processors? Better Graphics card? More RAM? Feel free to comment and help out. (Please no "Yor stoopid fer not no-ing dis" type junk.)

Generally, more RAM and a faster processor etc - basically just upgrading yo ****nit will make stuff faster.
But to do this cheaply, I'd say get some more RAM, then see what you can do with your software, ie, disk cleanup, disk defragment etc etc.

Can you describe the lag that you're experiencing. There's different types, some of it you can improve, others it's in CCP's court to fix. - Eve IGB Store Template - The complete eve retail solution. |

Throw it from a high building. It'll be pretty fast for a little bit.

get a new cheap, out of date computer for just 500 USD... if you use all the old, low end parts you can get a new comp for even 300 USD...
if you friends or neighbors have an old comp that they are willing to sell, see if they can give it to you cheaply...
some systems have a room for cheap upgrade, some are at their maximum capacity... for some systems the upgrade isn't worth the cost;
if you have a pentium 4 with AGP slot you can purchase 2 GB RAM 80 USD and an AGP video card for 100 USD.
if you have a PCI-e motherboard, you can buy a newer PCI-e graphics card and extra ram in dual channel...
upgrading processors doesn't make big difference... if you want to get a new processor you basically need a new motherboard... and a new motherboard will require a new Power supply unit... that's in fact a new computer.
Scrap metal computers, building rigs from burnt out and discount devices can be fun, but very time consuming.
the next step lies in the Operating Systems tweaking and fine tuning... hardware drivers, different software versions can improve performance
if you use Windows XP, it can be a very good idea to get an XP light edition, with essential support for gaming only...
invest 200 USD and two weeks into OS research and you will get results.
A cheap new computer is around 500 USD A good new computer can be 1100 USD A very good computer may cost 2000 USD
a used computer may be 50% cheaper and still remain good
a Junk computer may cost 150 USD, but it will require a lot of manual work

OK, should've put this in first. I got it as a "high-end" stock computer from PC World. Its great with one client, but lags a bit with two running (may just be the server nodes). This it what its got:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400. 2GB DDR2(533 Mhz). ATI Radeon X1300 (possibly two).

If you aren't sure how many graphics cards you have, I suggest getting a friend or professional to help... - Originally by: CCP Whisper In before Dietrich and Co. *click*

That's your problem right there. You bought it from PC World.
Okay, the only thing that's lacking is the graphics card. Replace it with a HD4850, which will set you back about ú110. Or if you don't want to spend that much, try an 8800GT or a HD3850. The CPU is fine, the RAM is fine. __________________________

Like I said, I use them, dunno a lot about them.
*shrugs*
Might need to upgrade the graphics card to a FireGL or similar card anyway for a new program, so thats not an issue really.

FireGL cards are geared more towards CAD programs and the like. They don't perform so well in games (so I hear - I've never actually used one). If you're wanting to run more Eve clients, you really want to be looking at a Radeon. __________________________

Could always have both in the case and set the different programs to use different cards.... Can't I?

PCs from PCW aren't all that bad if you're only looking to buy a lower-end machine. Their high-end gaming rigs however are a complete joke; usually with a decent CPU but some terrible graphics card. I've lost count of how many failmachines I've seen on display there; think the best one was a Packard Bell iExtreme with EXTREME!11 Intel Quad Core, 4GB of memory and a 7600GS

I doubt it. You need both cards to run off the same driver, and I think FireGL use different drivers to Radeon. __________________________

Is PWC the euro equivalent of Best Buy or something? I keep hearing how much they suck and is nothing but a commercialized load of horseshit type of company. Sounds exactly like Best Buy, might even have the same owners. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

Any comp bought from pcw is instant fail, sorry, but its true. They sell to people who dont know any better and dont have the money to really waste on the crap they sell.
Replace your card as quick as you can. Any mid to upper lvl card should work. Nvidia 880o series are really cheap atm and they work just great. As for running dual clients, check out the multiple threads on Eve forums for ideas on how to get the optimum results.
