While I was sitting in a mission hub last night waiting for one of my modules to activate I had an idea. Everywhere on the forums and in local you can see people complaining about the lag in the big level 4 mission hubs. Aside from spreading the high-sec level four agents around a bit (they do seem all clumped together) the most common suggestion is to move all of the level 4 mission agents to low sec space and let the pirates remove the problem for us.
In my opinion that is a bit extreme, but here's my basic idea: Allow players to 'war dec' a mission agent and by association everyone currently running missions for that agent. I can see the flames already, but let me press on and try to flesh out my idea.
First we need a fancy new name, lets call this a 'vendetta'. Now we have some options.
1) We could make it work very much like a war dec mechanic, with a corp having to pay a fee (bribe) to declare a vendetta. Then after some time the corp is allowed to shoot anyone running missions for that agent.
2) We could make it work more like an aggression timer. An individual pays a bribe to concorde and gets an aggression flag for everyone running missions for that agent.
In the first case, the fee's should be high, something like dec'ing an alliance. Say 50M for a week. And with 24 hours before the fighting starts.
For the second case the fee should be lower, say 1M for a 15 min aggression flag (and you could give a 2M bribe for 30 min etc).
The Balance Some things to keep the pirates from completely taking over
- Anyone running for an agent with a vendetta is obviously free to attack back (or first)
- You only are paying off concord, not the faction. So station guns WILL attack anyone who's declared a vendetta on their agents. If you have a vendetta against a caldari navy agent, all guns belonging to caldari navy will fire upon you. This will keep people from just camping the station
- Declaring a vendetta will cause loss of agent standings (corp/faction too?)
- You can only declare vendetta's on high level agents. Level 4's and up, or maybe level 3's and up. This lets the new player actually fly missions.
- Add a new dialog to an agent conversation along the lines of "Are there any active vendettas against you?". The agent will list them and give you the option of running a 'vendetta mission' where your task is simply to kill anyone with a vendetta against the agent. You're now a mission runner so both of you are targets to each other
Why? The biggest high-sec mission hubs will be the biggest targets. This will cause people to find less used agents without 'forcing' them to do so (like you would if you just move all level 4 agents to low sec). This should help 'load balance' the population and lead to less lag.
It adds some more pvp into the game too, just like war-decs.
It provides npc-corp players who are running missions with a bit of risk *cough* macros *cough*.
Now I know people will complain that it will ruin mission running totally, but we can already do this to some extent. Even now, in a mission hub you only have to scan down a mission runner and go steal thier loot and salvage their wrecks to ruin their profit. This is almost the same, it just lets the pirate shoot first if they paid a bribe (and lets the missioner shoot freely too if they want).
I'm sure this will destroy eve as we know it, so please let me know why you think it will. (or if you have constructive thoughts, those are welcome too) |

yeah, you're right, that is pretty crazy... but... I kinda like it. I do run lvl4's now and then in hi/low sec, but I do like the part about dec'ing those players that are in NPC corps. However, I just see way to many problems with it. Honestly I see it can be a way to just grief more. But your balance idea about sentries firing on the dec'ers is cool, but in hi sec, those can be lethal (plus you'll have the ships that web and scram you) So basically for an entire week, you can forget about undocking in anything smaller than a BC. -------------------------------------------------- Leave my hair alone... |

Edited by: Typhado3 on 09/08/2008 00:36:52 so you want a carebear hunting license......
at least in wars you can band together, this would be a war against a bunch of people who don't know each other and don't co-ordinate. I would see it that all the mercenary corps would dec all the good agents or even low quality agents commonly used for earning standing (imagine carnage if they deced one of the starting agents) and would camp those systems in safespots with cloaked ships watching the station, the moment someone leaves station for a mission they get scanned out and jumped by a gang of mercenaries.
It would move everyone out of the hub systems and spread them out. But then the pirates would move to those new systems and hunt them again and again (1 properly fit raven is worth the 50m war dec fee), as noone would use a positive quality lvl 3/4 agent after this (except large alliances running missions together) and there would still be plenty of pirates hunting anywhere else more than 3-5 carebears gathered meaning you would have to keep moving constantly (or spend weeks not missioning, which means logging off for many). Most mission runners have loads of stuff (a freighter full) in their station at their mission hub or even just 2/3 ships and a hauler or so of equipment. With this plan they would have to move all of that stuff a hell of a lot, and with wardec mechanics they would have to do that while under fire from pirates (agression timer fixes this a bit). Even more of a problem is trying to earn standing for all these different agents, it might be ok for those who have say 7.0 standinng with minmatar republic but for noobs trying to earn standing (say hello to heavily camped faction missions) for a corp with all the good lvl 3/2 agents camped only to have your corps good lvl 4 agents war deced once you get up to them is just a pain. You would spend way too much time trying to earn up standing for different corps instead of doing missions.
To me this seems to be taking the worst part of the war dec system and applying it to missions (the fact that most wars are just for hunting carebears rather than legitimate fights). Before you say I'm just a lvl 4 mission runner trying to protect my lvl 4 agents.... I run missions for minmatar mining corp barely enough targets to make it worth a wardec (3/4 maybe run mission for the best agent), and even if they did I have standing with different corps with good quality rarely used agents all over eve and bases set up at a fair few of these still. With the proposed mechanics this would be the normal or practically required to do missions which can take months of setting up and a decent amount of isk pushing the game to be less noob friendly.

Irrational and stupid is all I have to say.
Luckily, this idea is so outlandish that CCP will never impliment it. Good ridance too.

I like the idea a lot, but I would keep it limited to a being able to temporarily 'buy' agression timers towards everything that sides with the agent (station/gate guns, navy ships, mission runners) for a short ammount of time after a warning of 1 minute before it starts to all players running missions. And make that cost a lot, like 50m for 30 minute timers.
This way it's not as long lasting but rather a short while, this means all good lvl 4 agents won't be wardecced 24/7/365. Or maybe it will turn out to be too much but the balancing should happen after testing... just that the initial idea is too much.
