I've been playing Eve for about a month now. During that month, I joined a corporation, ran missions, learned how to mine, started a small salvage business, and tooled around in some very tame low-sec pockets. All of this was pretty fun, but started to get repetitive. I managed to get myself into battlecruisers. And there was nothing particularly fun to blow up. My missions were rising very very slowly, and were kind of repetitive after a while.
I sat back and thought about what I really liked about this game. And here's what I came up with:
1) Gorgeous Graphics 2) Interesting economic and socio-political structures 3) Meeting and working with other pilots
I realized that none of the existing professions really fit my passions... Mission running was repetitive, mining was boring, industry was slow and had no eye-candy. I realized I could build a new profession--Tourist!
Anyone who has played nethack may remember the Tourist class. You may have tried this class and been disappointed. The tourist starts with a camera, a hawaiian shirt, and a credit card. In fact, the most archetypical tourist comes from Discworld. Read here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twoflower
So in the spirit of Twoflower, I've decided to set off to the most dangerous regions of space with the Eve equivalent of a hawaiian shirt, camera, and credit card.
You can read about my preparations here:

Day 1--Meet Mr. Pod
I started out in Jita--the central trading hub in Eve. In Jita, you can find whatever you want--ships, weapons, implants, and lots and lots of lag. Turned out that I didn't buy very much here, just various fittings for my Exequror, the "Tour Bus":
High 3x Salvager 1x Tractor Medium 1x Afterburner 1x Small shield booster 1x Survey Module 1x Cap Recharger Low 2x Expanded Cargohold II 1x Inertial Stabilizer
Then I loaded up with odds and ends I might need. Things like extra miners, overdrive injectors, armor repers, and drones--lots of drones. The one thing I didn't take was guns. Where I was going, guns would be no use.
I had done some homework beforehand. Providence is 0.0, but most of it is NRDS (not red, don't shoot) which means I can fly without constantly worrying about every passerby blowing me to smithereens.
I decided to cross over to 0.0 in Keberz, a system in the Khanid Empire. That first step was a doozy. There was sure to be a gate camp. The map showed it was run by AAA, Against All Authority, a rough looking alliance.
I decided to play it safe and dropped off my ship at a nearby station and took a shuttle across the 0.5 to 0.0 jump. Sure enough, I came out in a warp bubble. I decided to play it straight...
"Parley?" I enquired?
"Go ahead," Said the campers.
"I just want to talk..." I sent.
"Sure, I'll let my autocannon do the talking!" 30 seconds later I woke up as a clone. But I had at least seen my murderer! I instantly bought another shuttle and set course for the same job. As I flew, I opened a chat to the camper.
"Feel better?" I asked him.
"Yeah." He said.
"Want to pod me again? Got nothing in my head." I offered.
"Maybe. You want to pass?"
"Maybe we can work something out."
"How about 10 million isk?"
"I don't have that sort of money."
We kept up the conversation for a while and I started to appreciate this Gate Camper. He was an old timer who was winding down his Eve day with a good old fashion noob shoot. I told him about my quest to become a tourist, snapping photos and working my way through space salvaging wrecks.
Finally, I got to the gate and decided to chance it. Once across, my Camper buddy said, "Go ahead and warp away..."
I said, "Isn't that a warp bubble around me?"
"Yeah. See if you can run, though." So I tried. My shuttle lasted a few seconds then I was back in the pod. And then they stopped.
On local, I see, "I think we should keep him as a pet." Pet is better than prey, I guess. They started playing with me. "Try warping, harper." No can do, I've been scrambled. Try to get back to the fleet, harper." I'm webbed. Fun. "Let's fleet harper." Better... They formed a fleet with me, and the next thing I know I'm warping through the system. How did that happen? Oh, its a fleet warp. After a while, the campers got tired and let me go at the gate. I jumped my sorry, beat up pod out of system and back to the station. Little did they know I had a secret weapon...

Day 2--Life with the Knights
I put my secret weapon into action the next day... The ability to wake up early! I logged on at 1210 and made the jump. No one was in local! I had contacted the CEO of Libertas Fideletas earlier and he told me his zone was NRDS. I set my course and realized I had misread the map. This sovereignty was actually 8 jumps in, not 2.
So I made the jumps quickly, passing through the Paxton Federation and CVA space. I saw almost no one during my journey. Finally--my destination, P15-39. Home of... Knights? All the corporations in the vicinity seemed to have medieval type sigils. There was a strong feeling of the SCA in this constellation.
I quickly met some locals. Jagtor was quite welcoming. Nobody minded me scarfing wrecks. They were more interested in killing the rats. No one had salvagers equipped. Soon, I had filled my hold and headed to the station. There was a STATION! With real bathrooms... I never imagined 0.0 would be so s****!
I headed out for another pass. There were a couple of ratters more than happy to let me in on the kills. But they kept doing something that puzzled me... I'd flag where rats were and they reported they were engaging the rats. Then I'd fly there and there'd still be rats. In fact sometimes, I'd show up and the ratter would zip away a minute later, leaving me to the rats. Turns out that I can take out a couple of Sansha Monsters, but nothing else. I replaced my afterburner with a microwarp and kept well out of range, sending the drones to do my dirty work. Anyhow I asked about this strange behavior and eventually got the answers. Turns out that these ratters didn't care much about the babies I was killing. They wanted the big ones. So they left the little rats and the big ones respawned sooner. Of course this is no good for a salvager, because all these lovely wrecks are being guarded by angry little rats. So I headed back to dock to catch a holovid and sell off the salvage.
I also sent word to the next sov over that I was going to be passing through their territory. And with that, I logged off.

I think that an Obelisk would make a pretty good "Luggage". 120,000m3 could fit a lot of stuff. Looks very ominous as well. Two bad its got no fittings at all...
Thanks for the tip on the Great Wildlands. I'll make my way over there after I've swung through Providence. I suspect that "Curse" may be a little rough, but I'll see if I can do some homework first.

You really should get a blog to record this in for the future generations. Also have you considered getting some video recording software and turn this into a real travelling diary? Doesn't need fancy editing, after all it would be more real if it was edited roughly.

Day 3 -- Part 1 (The Plex)
As I logged in early today, I saw an email from my corporation. Mining op coming up this weekend. In empire space. Well, back to life in high-sec...
First, I explored the rest of Libertas Fidelitas space. They had a cozy little corner constellation with only 1 entrance. I stopped by the station at F-DT00 and found that they had cloning facilities and the ability to buy a jump clone. Sign me up! Oops--I've got no "Informorph Psychology" skill to use a jump clone. Turns out that purposely killing yourself to wake up in another clone across the galaxy takes some inner nerve achieved through training. Out here in 0.0, there was no sign of this skill book to purchase. So, I packed up the Tour bus and headed to the exit.
On the way out, a strange thing happened. Instead of warping straight to the gate, I was stopped some 100km away. There was a gigantic whitish bubble all around it with maybe 10-15 ships hovering around. I asked my new friend Actual Hero if they were defending the gates from the Barbarian Hordes.
"Not so loud on local!" He sent back.
So I tried again, "*whisper*Are you trying to defend the gates against the Barbarian Hordes? *whisper*"
He got my on private chat and let me know that there was a marauding gang in the area. Everybody kept telling me to get safe. I figured that discretion was the better part of value and high-tailed it towards high-sec space.
On my first jump into Paxton Federation space, I saw fellow with a problem I could help with...
"Salvage anyone? I've got 30+ ships here"
"Salvage? Music to my ears! Harper's Salvage in System" I boldly typed.
It turns out that the salvage was in a deadspace complex. He fleeted with me and I warped into it. My new friend was now fighting with some sort of Sansha Slaver Lord. It was spiky. It was ugly. I didn't want anything to do with it. Luckily, the wrecks were stacked up on the other side of the plex. Halfway through my collection, a bunch of new bad guys spawned and targetted me. I quickly warped back to station, letting Michael do the fighting. In a few minutes he was done and I got to continue the feast. When I was finally finished, I let him know I'd split the spoils 50/50. He wasn't interested. Just another old-timer with more isk than time and happy to help a noob out. You meet nice folks all over this galaxy.
I made a good 5 million isk off the one haul. I had to be careful not to sell too much stuff in this station. Some things were severely underpriced. I reprocessed a few things that nobody wanted and sold the minerals that were going for a good price, kept the rest. And off I went for a very uneventful trip through CVA (Curatores Veritas Alliance) space. CVA keeps a pretty orderly system from what I picked up. If you want a place to spend some time in 0.0, this may be the place for you. I was never targetted, never harrassed and folks seemed friendly and proud to live in Providence under the CVA. As one local told it, LFA got their little pocket kingdom from CVA for their aid in conquering the region. So all and all, providence is a good place to visit and contains a bit of local color with several small associate alliances under the CVA umbrella.

Day 3 -- Part 2 (Safe at last--Not!)
Finally I made it back to high-sec space. First things first--I wanted to bone up on some skills. So I headed out to University of Caille to pick up some books. U of C is very useful whenever you need to get a new skill. They've got nearly all the books for reasonable prices. I bought 6 on all manner of subject. I also zipped over to the nearest trade hub and bought some bargain implants. I figured the chance of losing them in the near future was rather high.
While I was cycling through level 1 skill training in various subjects, I started salvaging the 0.4 system where U of C was located. There were a number of wrecks floating around and some small rat packs I could take on. I spent the time warping from belt to belt picking up wrecks and chatting with the folks I'd met. I was asking my murderer from day 1 if I could get into AAA controlled space when I noticed a red flashing icon on my overview. It had a skull and crossbones under it. I'd been in 0.0 for some time, so I wasn't too concerned. But I was playing on my slow laptop... As I tried to engage microwarp to get a little distance, I got an alarming message...
"Your ship is out of control" Or something like that. Crap. Time to warp away...
"Your warp core is being scrambled" I hit the shield booster and started panicking. 3/4 of the screen was covered with chat windows, emails, and market reports. Then the tour bus exploded! I was ready this time, and right clicked space to warp to something anything nearby. I ended up at a gate, no signs of pursuit. I was still alive! Here I thought low-sec was practically safe.
I breathed a sigh of relief and headed back to station. Its time to buy a new ship.

Day 4--The Eve Gate
The mining op got cancelled, and I was back in Empire space and bored. What to do...
Off to snap some pics of the Eve gate in New Eden of course!
Getting to the Eve gate is easier than I thought. Though it is 8 jumps through low-sec space, about half the systems boasted no inhabitants whatsoever. The closer you get to New Eden, the fewer pilots you'll see. Make sure to snap a few pictures of the lovely station ruins on your way in...
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/new_eden1.jpg
Finally, I arrived at New Eden.
There's only one place to warp from the stargate at New Eden. Its the last remaining planet, New Eden V. I assume the other 4 were destroyed in the catastrophe that destroyed the Eve gate. I had the system to myself during a fairly busy time. So I didn't have to worry about pirates or even rats.
The scene is dominated by the "Thing" that was the Eve Gate. Now it looks like a second sun with warp lines eminating from it...
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/new_eden3.jpg
New Eden V is a Saturn-like gas giant at the edge of "something." A rip in the space time continuum, I guess.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/new_eden4.jpg
All through the area, there are cargo containers with messages. Most of them are pretty dumb, but if you look towards the anomaly from New Eden V, you'll see something called "Yodelling Point." You can warp to it and get just that much closer to one of the most spectacular sights in the Galaxy.
New Eden is located in Amarr space. Though it is in low-sec, I had no hassles journeying quickly there...

Day 4 (cont) -- Gateway and hijinx
On the way out of New Eden, I noticed a bunch of "Blue" pilots in Gateway. I have no idea why they were blue to me, but I never did get their attention. Instead, I did a little exploring around Gateway. While there is no station in Gateway, the ratting is good and the mining is not too bad, either. Gateway has many, many belts and few inhabitants. Here's a shot of the Tour Bus II near some Vivid Hemorphite...
Ore in Gateway
Of course, I was fitted for salvage. I found a few wrecks rotting around some of the gates and did a little light salvage work. When the rats showed up, I had to leave. Rats at Gateway
I managed to kill a pair by themselves, but it was painful fighting 0.2 rats with only drones from an exequror.
Finally, I made my way to Empire Space again and checked on my Alliance. I noticed that LK had just signed on. LK has been very generous with Salvage jobs in the past, so I gave him a shout. Yes, he was running missions, and he was itching to show off his new Navy Issue Megathron. I was more than happy to oblige.
When I finally got to Oursaleart, LK was ready to hop in the 'Thron. It was like a normal Megathron w/ camo paint. As I flew past him, my ship was suddenly enveloped in a blue web that I recognized all too well--Stasis Webifier. Then I heard the firing start. Had LK betrayed me?
Actually, LK was just playing games with the webber. However, Concord took a very dim view of this. They all instantly opened fire (we were just outside the Navy Testing Facilities). LK's Megathron lasted about 20 seconds. No more fancy ship. I made sure to rush to the scene and salvage what I could. The many nearby ships were descending on the wreck like locusts. I managed to save some faction ammo and a few spendy modules, but the rest was lost...
I think LK had that ship out in space for all of 1 minute. I guess the lesson is this--you don't joke about bombs at the airport and you don't joke about PvP in Concord space. Especially when there's scads of heavily armed concord forces all around you.

Day 4 -- Mission Running cleanup service
I've found that the absolute quickest way for a newbie to make isk is to salvage other folks missions. Generally, people running L3 and L4 missions are sick to death of salvaging. Plus, running missions is pretty lonely. You can usually find someone willing to take on a sidekick for an hour or so. Load up for salvage and warp in a few minutes after your patron. Here's the scene you're likely to find:
Wreck, wrecks, and dangerous stuff
Salvaging wrecks from an mission in progress is heady stuff. There's explosions and dogfights going on all around you, while you try to make your way from wreck to wreck as quietly as possible. Occasionally, a new spawn will target you. In that case, just warp somewhere else, and the big, tough, mission runner will get targetted when you are gone. Warp back and you'll be left alone.
On my way to mission, I also stopped at the graveyard in Yulai:
Yulai Graveyard
This is what remains of a massive battle where Concord headquarters was sacked. Here's an eyewitness account:
http://ombeve.wordpress.com/2008/06/10/yulai-concord-bureau-station-under-attack/
The station was eventually destroyed.
So where to next. I'd like to see some Earth-like planets. Maybe take a tour through minmater space and some of the 0.0 kingdoms nearby. LK bought me some nice implants, but made me promise not to get podded. I couldn't quite make that promise, but I'll be a little more careful in the future. I've now got nearly 20 million isk in my head. Makes one a little more cautious...
Anyhow, the tour bus is leaving...

I've actually been thinking how much a "Tourism Board of Eve" or some such corporation is needed. Basically, a corp devoted to allowing freedom of movement for tourists to major Eve destinations. Such a corp could join various alliances temporarily to allow their members access to those areas. You could pay the hosting alliance some isk and run tours. Of course, player alliances are probably too paranoid about spies to actually allow this to happen... But you never know.

I think you should start up an unbiased news service, that supplies pictures and news from all the major events in Eve. It would be interesting to get pics and accounts of battles that are from a neutral point of view. Of course, getting all sides to agree you are not a target........
But you might be able to get people to subscribe for a nominal fee to your service. Great writing style, excellent material.

Instead of a travel agency why not become a traveller's guide writer? Begin with all the landmarks in EVE, important places in recent news ect. You could still set up a deal with certain big alliances to visit and detail on spots in their space under their watchful eye.

Day 5ùMission Running in Oursulaert
I traveled back to Empire space because my corp was supposed to be holding a big mining op. However, the op was cancelled and I had some time to kill. As I was in Oursulaert, I did what one does in Oursulaertùrun missions!
Oursulaert is a great system for a new player. It offers a cornucopia of agents and a great marketplace for parts and ships. This is the system that I call home because of it.
This day, I got a great missionùsome cuddly furry creatures had been genetically mutated into cuddly killing machines. The cuddly killer needed to be eliminated, but environmentalists were sure to try and stop me.
What made this mission particularly memorable wasnÆt the multiple waves of wussy bad guys. It was the final objective. There was an infected lab in the center of a hollow asteroid. Took me a while to actually find it and blow it up. It blew up really nicelyà
Blowing up the lab
The cool part was that it left a cargo container behindà inside the asteroid. It was time to see if my mission ship could actually fit in thereà
Spelunking in space...
ThatÆs right, I flew through the hollow asteroid with no collision issues. Stuff like this is golden!
Still, I tire quickly of mission running.

DonÆt let the red crosses bother you. They wonÆt fire. And for the trigger-happy, donÆt start anything because Concord regards each and every one of those ships as private property. Shoot something and you get killed by the cops.
I havenÆt been on Eve long enough to know all the history behind the Caldari-Gallente war, but from what I gather, its been long and bitter. The planet looks pretty blown to hell by now:

And thereÆs something new since I last visited. It appears the Caldari are constructing a new stationà

Day 6ùThe mining op
My first mining op! Oh the excitement of giant ships pulling tons of ore from the rocks of space. And this was going to be mining in low-sec. My corporation is a bità cautious when it comes to operations. With good reason. Those hulks donÆt come cheap. The rest of the corp was chomping at the bit to have a little payback on a pirate that had been harassing our players in the system. Folks were really working themselves up.
I contented myself to patrolling the belts for wrecks and bird-dogging rats for all the warriors looking for something to blow up. This is the basic relationship I try to establish in any system. It quickly becomes apparent that I am useful and folks donÆt try and kill me. The times IÆve gotten killed have always been when I donÆt talk on local. Then IÆm just some poor guy in an Exequrorùan easy kill.
Anyhow, the mining op finally got underway in a big wayà
Mighty Mining
The escorts got bored once all the big rats were splatted and practiced on each other. We had a bit of excitement as the pirate weÆd been looking for jumped in. Fleet chat lit up with chatter. Sadly the guy jumped away without contact some 5-10 min later. No trap was sprung. Miners just arenÆt vicious enough, I think.
There were only a few other outsiders that showed up to the system. Like this guy:
Some random guy
He was just looking for good ratting and got all kinds of chatter pointed at him. ôHey watcha doin?ö ôMight want to stay out of the high belts, op going onàö ôWant to join our corp?ö He finally figured on going somewhere a bit safer, what with all the disappointed trigger happy miners floating around.

Day 7ùOf Rats and Roids
Day 7 was spent salvaging various 0.0 locations. I did fairly well in providence region, and the locals were quite obliging to kill rats for me. However, it seemed like wherever I found a wreck, there were still some rats around. Not big ones, but they gave me trouble nonetheless. I asked the locals about this, and it turns out they were farming big rats. You get better isk and standing if you kill battleship class rats vs. the little frigate rats. The thought was that battleship class rats wonÆt spawn unless there is a critical mass of little ratsà
Anyhow, I was patrolling the belts for wrecks and _I_ donÆt mind killing little rats.
A Typical 0.0 belt
It takes a little while, though. IÆve got one big drone and 3 little ones to fight for me. The big one is a Berserker named Billy Bob. He was a rescue drone from a wreck. A little reprogramming and heÆs been right as rain. As I warped 50km from a belt, I ended up in the belt with some rats about 40km away. Two mamas and 3 babies. No problem, the Tour bus is a fairly nimble ship. See my loadout here:
The Tour Bus
I was typing in local to bird dog the rats when I got hit with my first laser. No problem, I selected the next belt to warp to. Only I didnÆt warp. Instead, my ship nosed around the edge of an asteroid while the rats steadily bore down on me. Now, the two battleship sized rats (SanshaÆs Slave Lords) had me in their sights and were stripping away the shields. I saw a planet symbol that was in easy alignment, so I right clicked it to warp. ôYou cannot do that while warpingö was the reply. Oh no! I tried to remember where the ôStop Shipö command was located. By the time I found it, my ship was blown and I was once again in a podà
Not again!
I bought an overpriced vexor from the local station and beat my way home to Oursulaert.
Oh and I stopped by Tash Murkon because of this article:
Tash Murkon is hot stuff
Sadly, there was not a lot to see. Just your typical trade hub with plenty of stations. Prices were not so good that I could even justify a trading run. Oh well, not all the destinations are plumsà

Day 9 û The Warzone
As I woke up early to beat the campers, I had a bit of trepidation. I was flying into an area of 0.0 that I was totally unfamiliar with. The only thing I had to go on was a reader who had mentioned they were bottled up in the middle of a war in the north. Looking at the map, I saw that the Servant Sisters of Eve had a little enclave a few jumps in. That seemed innocuous enough. 10 jumps from my current location. First stop was at Nonni for resupply.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/nonni.jpg
Not only is Nonni a great trade hub and mission base, it sits right next door to the 0.4 system of Aunenen. I asked around the system if there was a gate camp and some brave volunteers headed across the gate to check it out. Everything was fine. I went across myselfà And was targeted by a lone pirate. I decided to hoof it to the nearest planet and then to the opposite gate. No more sign of the pirate. Aunenen is just a pocket lowsec, with highsec on either side. These little pockets can be quite dangerous or quite safe. It really depends on what sort has made their home there. For instance, Beke system in Genesis is quite safe. Aunenen seems a little on the rougher side.
Once through the lowsec pocket I proceeded on my way up to Torrinos, the last named system before 0.0 in Pure Blind. Originally I had hoped to visit the ISS station in Pure Blind as described here:
http://www.eve-iss.com/publicsite/borealis.asp
But then I saw this article:
http://eveshares.wordpress.com/2007/02/18/iss-borealis-outpost-announcement/
It looks like the ISS outpost is no longer the safe haven it once was.
The next best place is the station at X-7OMU. But to get there, youÆve got some dangerous territory to cross. Pulling up the map color coded to pilots killed in the last 24 hours showed a blindingly bright star at EC-P8R. Color coding for pilots currently in system showed a mere 20 ships. It was only 1240. I decided to risk it.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/war1.jpg
Amazingly, I managed to get through the system largely unmolested. I saw single ships at the gates, but nothing else. Just to be sure, I stopped by a planet to take a zigzag route to the gate. The next few systems were empty or nearly empty until I got to the Sisters space. Here, there were 40 ships active. I quickly docked at the outpost without seeing another soul.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/war2.jpg
I noticed I could actually run missions out of this station. It was worth a try, and maybe I could get a jump clone out here in the hinterlands. I got an absolutely tasteless mission to grab some ôperfumeö for the guys girlfriend. And I found out through chats that I needed to get my standing up to 8 to make a jump clone. Urgh. Time wasted.
I decided to ply my trade in the 8 belts in the system. Strange. There were no wrecks, no ratters. Nothing but feral gangs of rats. I noticed that the number of pilots in local kept going down, yet I never saw another shipà
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/war3.jpg
I took one last look at the station and decided to make a break for Empire space again. I was getting a bad feeling about thisà

Awesome tales, once I think a vacation might be in order after reading that
I would strongly suggest you register a wordpress or blogger account and actually put this on the net, it would be a lot easier to find and people can subscribe with an rss feed. You could also post more things about how to go about touristing and a nice list of the best sites to see. You could still post on here for exposure but it would be a good place to consolidate everything.
Keep up the good work!

Edited by: Harper Hendee on 13/08/2008 23:21:13 Day 10 û Factional Warfare (sorta)
The Exequrors havenÆt come in yet, so IÆm back to flying the ôOverpriced Vexorö that I bought a few days back in 0.0 space.
Smile for the camera, Overpriced Vexor!
I decided it might be nice to snap some pictures of real battles going on. My view of a real PvP battle was remarkably short. Perhaps I could sneak in on a factional battle? After all, they canÆt shoot me, right? So I pulled up the map and set it to militia killed in last 24 hours. I got a couple of supernova from that.
Factional Combat Map
Blast off to adventure
Course charted, captain!
Tama was my destination. But Tama was also 0.3 security. I decided to play it safe and stop off in nearby Nourvukaiken first. I hung out at the gate for a while asking stupid questions on local. The most pertinent of which was, ôHowÆs Tama for a neutral?ö The gate was surrounded by several ships. IÆm not sure if it was a makeshift gatecamp or just a bunch of guys waiting for the right time to jump to lowsec.
Factional gate camp?
The answer finally came as I had hit the jump buttonà a single wordùHot!
I emerged on the other side, my cloak still active with 5 ships on my overview. I announced my arrival and intentions on local. IÆm not a faction, IÆm a tourist. I want to fly around and take pictures of them blowing stuff up. I got the green light from at least one soldierà
Let the shooting commence... maybe?
After about 10 minutes of nothing happening, I got a priority call from Mrs. Harper and had to bug out. Too bad, I was hoping for some gritty wartime footageà

Day 10 û The junkyard
I found another interesting view of the map. You can highlight DED space objects. ThereÆs complexes in one view, and more permanent objects in another, like the Titan at Caldari Prime.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/map_ded.jpg
I set my path to the ôCarnival.ö Sounded like great touristy fun. But as I was jumping on my path I was brought up short in Deltole by an object on my overviewùMunicipal Junkyard. Now in addition to being a tourist, I am an avid junk collector. Ratting can be fun, mission running is ok, PvP I wonÆt touch, but junkà ThatÆs my biz. It gets me where I want to go, and it keeps gas in the tank and ships in my bay. So I jumped at the chance to visit a real Eve Junkyardà
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/junk1.jpg
Looking at all the floating junk, I though I was in heaven. Then I realized I was in hell. I couldnÆt salvage a thing! But it was a pretty sight. There were concord-type junk monkeys floating around and cargo containers with nothing but garbage in them. I decided stealing the garbage was probably a bad idea. Instead I flew around snapping pictures.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/junk2.jpg
I noticed another DED object on the overview. Some sort of skeleton comet.
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/skeleton.jpg
I warped to the beacon and there was an acceleration gate. Activating the gate brought me to a place from my wildest dreams!
http://www.thesmipps.com/images/eve/atg80/junk3.jpg
This was it. The mother load. The biggest haul ever! And here I was in a vexor with damn little cargo space. Still, it turned out to be the right ship, since there were scads of rats swarming through the wreckage. I was in luck this day, though. A couple of intrepid ratters were giving them a run for their money. Their distraction was just what I needed to pillage the wrecks. I made a good haul of low-grade junk and loot. However, the station in Deltole gives mediocre prices for salvage. YouÆre best bet is to sell it elsewhere. ThatÆs exactly what I did.

Edited by: Harper Hendee on 15/08/2008 18:24:37 Day 11 û Strange sights and COSMOS
Today I set about looking at some more of those ôDED space agentö areas. I came across the Ani constellation, full of a number of sites.

My first stop was the one that seemed most touristyùnamely the Carnival. I figured I could shoot down some balloons and get a stuffed animal for my kids. It turns out Carnival is not quite what I expectedà

It turns out that the Nefantars are a Minmater tribe. From what I can see of the ôCarnival,ö they must be on the ropesà
The Carnival is a little run down now
This is also where I spotted my first agent in space. IÆm still not sure how these guys work, because none of them would give me a job.
Agent
ThereÆs no rides at Carnival, so I decided to check out the next DED space object, the Hyperbole Nexus. Now this is a little more interestingà
Hyperbole Nexus Description
The Hyperbole is unlike any other site IÆve been to in the Eve universe. Its blue for one thing. Very blue. ThereÆs a big old radio telescope and a couple of agents floating around in space. None of them gave me the time of day, but I did manage to snap some nice picturesà

ThereÆs lots of great places to explore in the area. IÆll let the pictures tell the tale.

Edited by: Harper Hendee on 15/08/2008 18:27:14 Day 11 -- Plexes and Exploration
ThereÆs also a complex in the area. From what I glean, a complex is to Eve what a Dungeon is to fantasy games. You enter, kill stuff, and take loot. The complexes in Ani may be part of COSMOS agent missions. I warped in and saw a sight similar to the Skeleton Comet in Deltole. Hundreds of wrecks and lots of rats. Thank goodness there were plenty of combat ships to deal with them. I announced myself on local and got to work on the wrecks.
Salvaging can be a dangerous business
The pilots in the plex seemed perfectly happy to let me salvage and loot to my hearts content. I did my thing, salvaging, picking up loot, and sending isk to the nice folks killing rats. And then I started getting threats from pilots. I got targeted by one and quickly warped away. It turns out I had committed the faux pas of looting from wrecks that pilots were coming back for. ItÆs a bit hard to match wrecks to pilots, since they are identified by corporation and not pilot name. So I tried to make amends by sending isk to the pilots I had looted from. It seemed to help, but they were still surly. Luckily, weÆre in high sec space and most of the folks here arenÆt that interested in PVP combat. It turns out what was really bothering these pilots is that there are quest items scattered in the wrecks. Two pilots were frantically blowing up every structure looking for their magic maguffin. They were disappointed when it wasnÆt there. It seems that a pilot could make a business of sifting through the wreckage for quest items for the mission runners. But I donÆt know. I got sidetracked at that point.
A friendly capsuleer named Kambei took the time to show me the basics of exploration. You can find new plexes by scanning for them. This process can be quite time consuming, but its rewarding when you find something. Kambei had found a plex a few jumps over and called me over. He then ran me through the drill:
1)Open the scanner 2)Scan for cosmic anomalies 3)Analyze results 4)Warp to locations you uncover
Kambei made it really easy for me. He was flying some kick ass battlecruiser and led the way, taking the agro from the plex.
Brand new plex
I had a good look around and took some pictures and salvaged the wrecks. This plex was fairly tame. It consisted of a secret base with some defenders. KambeiÆs biggest bit of advice for the newbie is to avoid heavy batteries at all cost. They will take you out quickly at range!
Battery fire
There was no such battery here, though. Instead, just a bunch of loot and carnage. I bid farewell as Kambei moved further into the plex. There were multiple rooms, but I had other responsibilitiesà
Good luck!

Day 12 û The Great Wildlands
The Great Wildlands. Such a evocative name. Several capsuleers suggested I give it a visit, since it isnÆt controlled by any particular sov. This is NPC 0.0 space and cannot be conquered. But even the NPC stations are a little sparse.
IÆve got no pictures for this entry. Why? There was really nothing to see. Untamed rats roamed the belts and a few pilots drift from system to system. The only other soul I saw targeted me without saying a word.
On the way back to empire space, I stopped at Rens system to do some light ratting and salvage. Rens seems to be overpopulated with afk miners and their alts. Every other belt seemed like it had a hulk and a drake sitting motionless in space. I accidentally targeted one when I hit the ôtargetö button instead of the ôlookö button. No reaction. For 0.5 space, these guys are awfully complacent. But then again, the rats I came across were all very easy to kill with my 4 drones.

Day 13 û Making isk and seeing the sights of Empire
On my weekend, I spent much of my time making some ISK so I could buy and equip my ships before heading out on tour again. My current favorite spot to make some money is to salvage the Skeleton Comet. You may remember this site from Day 10à
Skeleton Comet w/ rings
I was also running missions on and off, so IÆm driving my Thorax.
Harper's Thorax in the Skeleton Comet
Grabbing wrecks from a level 4 deadspace complex may not seem like a very safe way to make isk. If I was soloing it, it certain would spell my doom. However, there are plenty of pilots who are pounding the rats in this comet for bounty and booty.
GalacticNova blows up something big
The second room was a little too hot for me, though. Fewer pilots venture there, so the agro is much more pronounced to a lightly armed salvager.
At the end of the day, I was finally able to put together my new High Sec space boat. ItÆs a Navy Vexor that I call ôThe Dread Lecturer.ö Why the lecturer? Because it just drones on and onà

Day 14 û Send in the Clones
My corp was hosting a pretty interesting event today. They were giving away free jump clones. We have a member who owns a Rorqual with a clone vat. A Rorqual is a capital industrial ship manufactured by ORE. The way it works is that we all rendezvous at a safe spot. Anyone who wants a jump clone on the cap ship can get one for 100k. You then decide where you want your original self to reside and fly there. In my case, it was on top of my stack of exequrors. Then you jump into the new clone. Voila! You are now ejected into space outside the cap ship. Luckily, I had a ship parked nearby.
Clone Day with the Rorq
I was a little worried that my jump clone would be evil and try to take over my life. I think I might be onto something. When I emerged into the jump clone, I noticed I know sported a goatee and a sword on my uniformà
This new jump clone me had no implants, so no worries. I decided to head into the dangerzone after MondayÆs downtime. First some intel is in orderà
My objective is SteveÆs Wreck, as mentioned by Grista. HereÆs the course IÆve plottedà
Course plotted (stars are bright by pod kills)
Originally, my autopilot routed me through the southern route through goonswarm space. I wasnÆt quite up to 15+ jumps with the goons, so I chose the lesser of two evils and went through SanshaÆs Nation. There was a clone station halfway through deep in Stain that I could drop off my Exequror and continue in a shuttle. If I got podded, no problem. I wake up with the Tour Bus IV in Stain. Mwuhahahaha! The plan is set.

Day 15 û The Wreck of Steve
Following GristaÆs advice, I decided to set out to see the ôRemains of Steve.ö The first titan ever destroyed in Eve. I parked myself on the edge of the abyss in Keberz. I have crossed over to catch on three other occasions using this system. It is almost always camped. At 1215, there were two pilots in the next system over. I took a deep breath and activated the jump sequence.
I was in a bubble. There were two ships on screen. This was beginning to look very familiar. My first crossing, I had been killed in the exact same setup from a AAA guy and his alt. I began to monologueà
ôGood morning campers!ö
ôLovely day for a podding, isnÆt it?ö
ôHow much to get through?ö
About this time I noticed that the weapons fire I heard wasnÆt directed at me. Some poor viator was getting webbed about 20km away from me! There was only 1 pilot here. The other guy was a victim!
ôLooks like its free today. See ya later!ö
I hit the afterburners and warped out of the bubble. The next few systems went by in a blur. They were mostly to entirely empty. But as I warped to the next gate, I was suddenly brought up short in a warp bubbleà
The Bubble in mid space
It was a small warp bubble placed on the line between the two jump gates. It was unmanned. I was still alive! Off I flew towards my goal.
In one of the more heavily populated systems I suddenly got a chat request. I accepted. It was Sovereign533, who reads this very travelog! He had seen me zip by. We convoed while I pushed further into Stain. Now I was in SanshaÆs nation space. He gave me a good amount of intel on the region, which was invaluable. My own intel wasnÆt so great. My clone station wasnÆtà
Mix up with the clones
Luckily, there was another station just a few jumps away on my flight path. After I moved my clone, I pulled out the Minmater shuttle from my cargohold. I wasnÆt taking any chances with the goons. Besides, a Tour Bus in Stain was liable to be useful in the future, now that I had a jump clone.
The Goon systems were as underpopulated as the AAA systems I had flown through before. In fact, there were only 2 other pilots in C9N, where the Wreck of Steve is. I had finally arrived at my destination.
Steve 1 Steve 2 Steve 3
So I got my pictures. I made my destination. Now what? Stay tuned, friendsà the tale continues to unfoldà

Day 15 û To circumnavigate the galaxy, by autopilotà
After seeing the Wreck of Steve, I was ready to get back to my Tour Bus and beat a retreat through Stain. The easiest way back was to get podded. That seemed like a very easy thing to do. Since I was already in Goon space, I should just head deeper until someone noticed. Besides, there were all these little pocket empires at the edge of space. The first one I stopped at was the Ministry of Amarran Secret Service.
Amarran Secret Service
No one wanted to talk. Nobody came out and shot me. And I needed to go afk for a while. I decided to plot an autopilot course 44 jumps away along the edge of the galaxy. Certainly, I would get podded in that time. I had one last look at a beautiful Earth-like planet and engaged the autopilotà
Nice planet
I came back 30 minutes later, surprised that my shuttle was still flying. I set some waypoints and engaged the autopilot still further.
Suicide course
An hour later, my shuttle was still untouched. I set up my laptop and started doing RL work while keeping half an eye on the shuttle. I set course yet further along the galactic rim. I jumped over Jove space and kept going.
When will the madness end?
I realized that I might just survive this crazy journey. Maybe I could make it to ORE space. They were practically legit, right? The Outer Ring Excavation corp is the NPC corporation that makes Hulks and other goodies. I set my course and hoped for the best.
Partway along the way, I was fired on. I saluted my attacker and prepared to die. But I did not. Armor got fried by 75%, but the shuttle made it to the gate and jumped out. My would be attacker didnÆt want to talk, so I left it and continued on.
I went through Mostly Harmless space, Razor space, Pure space, Unnatural Selection space, and even a little pocket of BOB space. I even did a little sightseeing at some DED space complexes along the wayà
A very tough plex.
Finally, as I approached my final destinationùjust 6 jumps awayà I was attacked at a gate and perished shortly afterwards.
Waking up as a clone in Stain region, I felt triumphant. My goal of visiting every region of the galaxy was just a little closer todayà
Galactic overview (highlighted where I've been)
I gave my goatee one last stroke, and jumped into my original body in Empire space.

Day 16 û Cowards and ISK farming
Day 16 opened up bright and sunlit. I was back in my home base, scattered bits of junk and modules strewn all about. I put together the Tour Bus V and set out. This time, I was heading east, towards the Fountain Region. My final destination: the Elitist Cowards.
IÆve noticed that most 0.0 space is incredibly unfriendly. Or maybe they podding me is just a different way of saying hi. The only place where I wasnÆt shot on sight were in Providence. I think this is because of the nature of the player-led alliance being more or less in a constant state of war. I read the rather sad story of ISS trying to establish stations in 0.0 space to open up the area. They were eventually attacked and taken over, every single outpost. Having been around the rim, I can see what the ISS was trying to do. All this open, unoccupied space is out there, just going to waste. Many sovs in 0.0 had fewer than 10 pilots active in the entire area. In fact, flying the backwaters of 0.0 space can be safer than flying through low-sec space. I proved that with my suicide auto-pilot exploit. I was only shot down as I approached civilization.
With all this in mind, I went to visit the one place where I figured I might get a fair shake. Elitist Cowards is a small, hard-to-get-to alliance in the Fountain region. The reason I noticed them is that IÆve been using Verite RenditionÆs political maps for navigation purposes. Verite Rendition is in FREE explorers corp in the Elitist Cowards alliance.
It was a pain in the ass to get to their space. I had to fly halfway across the Syndicate to get there. About 17 jumps of 0.0 space as I recall. Finally, I arrived at my destination. I approached the station and announced my profession as a tourist. I was fired upon. I tried to make light small talk of this. It didnÆt work.
Nobody likes me...
YouÆll notice IÆm flying a velator in the pic. I put my death clone in the wrong station by accident and had to hoof it back to my pile of exequrors. *sigh*
The rest of the day was spent hanging around DED space complexes cleaning up wrecks (and making a few, too). I managed to find a powerful patron to fleet with and haul loot. She couldnÆt believe that I actually salvaged for a living. This is actually a really great profession for a newbie to get into. Salvaging doesnÆt require many skills and gets you into cooperative play with all sorts of people. Mission runners, complex divers, ratters all make wrecks. Make yourself useful cleaning the wrecks and you may be invited to loot as well. _Always_ make sure to fleet with whoever you are looting from. It makes it easier to identify the safe wrecks and protects you from retaliation.
By the end of my session, I was 10 mil richer but feeling a little weary at the treatment I had gotten in most of 0.0 space. Travel through Eve is like backpacking through Europeùin the 14th century. Every little fiefdom wants to kill me.

Hi Harper,
I really enjoyed reading your travelbook, thanks for that! I wonder why you never seem to run out of a certain colour while taking all those pictures ;)
I'm mainly trading in Ours, if there's anything you want me to place a buy-order on for you, just drop me a note.
Concerning the Navy Vexor: It sells at around 70m, 300+m is the price range for a Navy Megathron.

Day 17 -- Ennui sets in
Today got me a bit philosophical... I was trying to sneak my Tour Bus IV out of Stain using my jump clone today. Stain is rife with AAA pilots. Very aggressive guys with a mission. I got an anonymous tip that I was being tracked and that the HED system was probably camped. Rather than brave HED and many populated AAA systems, I took a turn and tried to sneak out via Paxton Federation in Providence. No dice. Got caught in a bubble between gates and podded shortly thereafter. Memo to myself--next time jump to a planet before jumping to a gate. These straight-line courses are just asking for trouble. Especially in a system with one entrance and one exit.
I spent the morning chatting with some of the readers of this travelog and moving my ships and cargo around. I recent bought some spendy skillbooks, so I'm trying to raise some isk again. My normal double goldmines of the Drone Infested Corridor and Skeleton Comet were not as profitable as in past. I was even shooed out of Drone Infested Corridor by the plex runner there. Didn't want me salvaging wrecks.
So not much new to report. I think I've got my next destination, though. Serpentis Prime in Fountain. Last time I was in Fountain, I got killed by Elitist Cowards. But I kind of asked for it, walking up to their front door and knocking on it. Next time I'll be a little more careful. There's the PvP historic system of YZ-LQL as well. A Gallente Erebus was destroyed here once. I'm not sure if the wreck is still around, but one can hope...

Day 18 -- Danger clone doesn't die...
I'll start with a brief rant and apology. I've got no screen shots today. For some reason, my Eve-client has been killing all my keyboard shortcuts every time I quit and restart. This is really frustrating because I've got a Novint Falcon game controller set up for nearly everything I need in the game. This means a lot of extra work setting up 5-15 keyboard shortcuts to take full advantage of the thing. In any event. I thought my screenshot button was working. It wasn't.
Today I set sail for Serpentis Prime. Its hidden deep in 0.0 in the Fountain region. Last time I came this way, I knocked on the front door and got shot up. Serpentis Prime has real NPC stations, so I figured I'd wait until I docked before introducing myself. Just to be on the safe side, I went as "Danger Clone"--my jump clone with no implants. I went in my Amarr shuttle, "The small furry animal"
The jump into low-sec was the normal white-knuckle experience, but quickly passed. No gate camp today, though there was a single ship flying around. Probably doing the same thing as me. I had a shock later when I jumped into a system to be confronted with 8 ships all blinking red and firing weapons. It took a few seconds to realize I wasn't the target. I think it was a factional warfare battle. The next system over had a gallente bunker.
After that little patch, the next 20 jumps were fairly quiet. Most systems were entirely empty. As I approached YZ-LQL and Serpentis Prime, I started seeing more ships. I moved quickly with my shuttle. In systems more than one pilot in local, I always jump to a planet first. I don't want to repeat the incident where I got caught in a gate-to-gate line warp bubble.
I arrived at Serpentis Prime without further incident. There were 4 other pilots. I jumped from planet to planet and found 2 earth-like ones. There are 3 stations and I visited all 3. There's a cloning facility at the middle one. Serpentis must not hate me too bad, even though I killed all those Serpentis Rookies in my missions for Gallente agents.
Once docked, I started convo on local. At first, I just got vague threats and warnings. But eventually some friendlier comments. It helps when you can't be blasted out of existance. The main alliance seemed to be Sons of Tangra. I asked about war and politics and was told to just look at the kill board to get an idea. This is actually good advice. I found that the Sons of Tangra were fighting the Black Star alliance and allied with the Pandemic Legion. Good stuff.
I decided Serpentis Prime might be a good place to leave from later, so I jumped back to my implanted self in Essence. From there, I spent some time moving stuff around and shooting up rats in the Skeleton Comet.
I sold a bunch of things to buy myself a Myrmiddon, which I've outfitted as a Passive Shield Tank. Basically, I'm maxed out with Large Shield Extenders and Shield Hardeners in my mids, Shield Relays and Power Diagnostics in the lows, and a 100mn afterburner. In the highs, I've got 2 250mm rail guns and salvaging equip. Makes a very good plex runner. The passive shield setup regens with no fuss. The drone bay holds plenty of hammerheads, so if I lose one to rats I just launch another. No more babying my drones.
I'm going to stay in empire space for most of the weekend, then jump back to Danger Clone later.

Days 19 -- Mining Ops and the Cops
I've dubbed my jump clone in Serpentis Prime as "DANGER CLONE". I'll use him whenever I have any dirty or dangerous work in 0.0 space. In the meanwhile, I'm hanging in Empire space as "Original Me" the pampered clone with the nice implants and ships...
Day 19 opened with a call from some corp mates for a mining op. I showed up in the Weiner Dog (my Iteron III) but there wasn't as much hauling has expected. Luckily, the Weiner Dog has a few salvagers and we salvaged the wrecks the mining op had made.
Guiding Star ad hoc mining op
So I went back to Deltole for some high risk salvage runs through skeleton comet. Now a days, I'll start my first pass through the comet with my heavy salvage ship, the "Dragon Dentist". There was a bit of commotion at the gate. Lots of concord ships had shown up.
Concord Convention
Evidently something had attracted the cops... But what?
What could bring them all?
The fun thing was watching the reactions as people warped in. Something like "WTF? There's a gazillion cops out here!" Then I'd spin them a yarn...
"They are here for the new donut shop..." "You've been a very bad boy..." "Its the Democratic Convention, Barak Obama is coming in a Opus Luxury Yacht..."
The last quip started an ugly political debate on local. I tried to jump in with my own 2 cents:
"Free Caldari Prime!"
"Stop the oppression of poor Gallente colonists on Caldari Prime!"
"They are cruel overlords! They make Gallenteans join corporations and drive ugly cars!"
Nobody seemed to notice. They went on bashing or defending Barak Obama. Oh well. Some folks can't take a joke.

Day 20 -- Spinning wrecks into gold
Today was spent building up a stake to cover my expenses in the more dangerous places in Eve. I managed to raise nearly 30mil over the weekend for about 3-4 hours of work. Here's how I did it...
First, find a good source of wrecks. They don't have to be your wrecks. They don't even have to be your buddy's. But it helps if they are. Public DED space complexes are a great place to start. I tend to hang around Skeleton Comet. There are a good number of players who spend all day long shooting anything that moves in Skeleton Comet. Needless to say, there's always a lot of wrecks.
Now that you've found your wrecks, do a independent loop through the plex. Salvage the dense areas and see who's working the field.
A first pass through Skeleton Comet
The first room is always easy to get to and fairly easy to survive. Subsequent rooms get harder and harder. You really shouldn't try to find a patron to fleet with if you want to get to the second room. I find a patron by one of the following methods:
1) Public advert on local 2) Asking around in alliance and corp chats 3) Private convo to pilots already in the plex
My deal is always the same. 50/50 split on loot and salvage. If I don't have a patron, I just salvage and keep it all to myself. This is very important--DO NOT LOOT YELLOW WRECKS. Many pilots think its no big deal, but others will consider you a disgraceful lying thief. In any event, now that you have a patron, make sure to fleet together. You now can tractor and loot his wrecks. This makes the salvage op go much much faster.
My patron in the second room
A very profitable quarry
Once you've done a few trips to suck up most of the loot and salvage from your partner, then its time to turn it into isk. Head back to station and sort it all out...
The Station
Keeping a station container is useful to separate your own stuff from client loot. A station container is just a separate "folder" for your loot at station. It costs just under 200k and is huge.
Now you need to take your loot to a decent market. Fire up the map and see which systems have the most pilots. That's where you want to sell.
Plotting a course to market
You'll want to use an industrial ship to transport all this stuff. Getting industrial III is pretty easy to train up and is more than sufficient.
My Iteron III, the "Weiner Dog"
Now that you've reached your market, sell off the stuff that's priced good. The stuff that's not so good either create a sell order, or melt it down by reprocessing. I tend to do this with ammo, since it takes so long to sell all the individual piles.
Figure out how much isk you made off of everything and send 1/2 of it back to your patron. They'll be thrilled. I usually send back between 2 and 9 million, depending on the haul.
Of course, the nice thing about salvaging these places is that you don't have to concentrate on killing things so much. It gives you a chance to do some sightseeing.... Interior of the Comet
A rather dangerous resort
Now I've got my credit card paid off, my Hawaiian shirt is laundered, and new film in the camera. Its time to head on another tour. This time to a dirty little war in Vale of the Silent...

I need to get to the other side of the galaxy, quick.
I'm living in a war zone. Should be easy.
Things get off to an ok start...
I find the perfect spot.
And then a long wait started. Nobody wanted to help me out.
Insults! Not even politics work! Maybe I'm a spy?Feels like the French knights in the holy grail. Is this really happening? A miracle! Our hero! You know, that was my first gate camp...

Day 22 -- Learning to Cloak
I spent my time this morning with a cloaking device in one hand and the manual in the other. Eventually I figured out how to plug it into my Tour Bus VIII, which is hereby dubbed the "Magical Mystery Bus". I'm over in the Forge in Caldari COSMOS space but didn't take many pictures. The Contested Caldari Mining site in Friggi is similiar to skeleton comet, but with fewer plex runners. Great if you are looking for a plex to run.
I managed to hook up with a runner fairly quickly and looted one of the second rooms called "Guristas Treasure Hold." Sadly, RL called before we managed to get to the "Treasure" part. Seems slightly easier than the Drone Infested corridor, and the salvage and loot was mediocre. One load netted me only 2 mil, which I split with my patron.
I'm getting ready for a big move soon... Anyone in the neighborhood who wants to give me a hand tomorrow at 1215 is welcome.

Day 23 -- Hangover
I'm back in my "Regular Me" body. DANGER CLONE has been up to mischief!
I had sent him to hang out in the Caldari COSMOS cluster until system uptime to sneak into the Triumvirate war. He did send back some nice pics of some of the complexes...
Devils Dig Big bad stalagmite thingy
Rush Town Stonehenge revamped?
The Gallows Arena
But then he got into some trouble... Followed an acceleration gate to a drone infestation. Little drones are that tough, right? Turns out that the big ones can kill a tour bus before it can align and warp. Learn something new everyday. That got DANGER CLONE to wake up in Oursulaert. And that's when things went wrong...
Danger Clone Speaks
He spent the rest of the day running _my_ business. Buying implants with _my_ isk. And even getting into fights with clients.
Client #1 was fine with salvaging in private convo, but then started talking smack when DANGER CLONE started salvaging _his_ wrecks.
Client #2 lured DANGER CLONE out with the Tour Bus fitted for loot cleaning, then demanded loads of isk up front before joining fleet. DANGER CLONE headed back with a 1/4 full hold of salvage and no loot. It was a little too fishy.
Finally, there was an contract from a reader in Sev3rence with a free Tour Bus (Thanks for that B!). DANGER CLONE jumped at the opportunity and headed out to the Pig Sty to get it. Well, he couldn't resist letting me know about it by jumping back into my body... And here I am again.

Day 24 -- Nature Photography
Now that I can use cloaking devices, I decided to build a new ship class: The Nature Photographer.
Nature Photographer
I studied up on Amarr frigs for a day to be able to fly it. This sleek ship has the following fit:
1x Prototype Cloaking Device 1x Salvager (but of course...) 1x 1MN microwarp 1x Small Cap Battery (used to be remote sensor dampener, but that sucked) 1x Inertial Stabilizer 1x Nanofiber Structs
For me, this ship can go nearly 3.5km/s and turns on a dime. Its a great starter stealth ship for someone who can't fly a covert ops. I managed to make some isk with it, too.
Collecting samples
The good people of KBP7-G were nice enough to kill some of the rats in the belt. It was a good place to practice being sneaky. Here's some pics I got while cloaked:
Predator and Prey
And next its off to visit Amarr Prime!

Day 25 -- Amarr Prime
While I was wandering aimlessly about, I got convoed from a reader whom I'll call AD. AD was heading towards Amarr Prime, and I decided that sounded like a great destination. The view of Amarr Prime itself is fantastic!
AD gave me some history of the area-with his own bit of flair...
The Amarrans certainly have style.
There's some good shopping to be had as well at the nearby Retail Center.
Neighboring system Zimse has some nice sights as well.
Administration Complex
There's even a museum! I was sad to see it was closed on that day unless you are an archeologist.
But nearby is southway plex.

I'll be jumping back to DANGER CLONE next. I'm concentrating on going to 0.0 space. DANGER CLONE, you'd better be listening!

Day 26 -- Curses!
Its Day 26 and I'm DANGER CLONE. Again. Time to fly through some of the most dangerous 0.0 space near empire. Curse is an NPC sov region, but is 0.0 security level. That means that there are stations that anyone who hasn't torqued the NPC corps too bad can dock there. It also means that players cannot own systems in this region. It is an an anarchy zone.
Harper's Path
All the major junctions have significant pod kills in the last 24 hours. As I get closer to Curse, I start seeing some big rats...
Big Rats
Along the way, I got targetted at several of the gates. The first time I was quick enough to warp away. The second time I got warp scrambled.
Another Gate... what lies beyond?
My worst fear... gate camp with a warp bubble...
Warp Bubble, still cloaked
But they had bigger fish to fry. An Armeggedon class Amarr Battleship jumped through right on my heels!
Amarr Battleship tackled!
More Abuse
On the ropes
And then it was just me... still cloaked. The warp bubble was gone. The Armeggedon must have destroyed it. All I needed to do was get the hell out.
I took a look at the celestial objects around me. There was a planet just to the left of the stargate. Perhaps if I made for the planet, they would wait at the stargate. I slowly aligned myself to the planet. I dropped the cloak and hit "warp within 100km" all in one quick succession of clicks. As I cruised through warp, I wondered what would await me. When I popped into space, the tackler was waiting some 90 km in front of me. I hit the cloak and swerved to the side. The interceptor moved wicked fast towards me. Within 30 second, we whizzed by, just 2914 meters from my ship!
In Hiding
I waited a few minutes, and then made a break for the gate. I took a round-a-bout trip through some deserted systems and then was on my way, wondering how I was going to get out of Curse in one piece.

Day 26 -- Noobs to the rescue!
While I was contemplating getting back to empire space again, I got a convo from a reader... It was a guy named Shanty Man. He wanted to know how the tour was going. I had a job in mind for him... Decoy.
Shanty Man was more than willing to help. He found a cheap, fast ship (an Atron) to provide a distraction while the Magical Mystery Bus slipped through. It worked just as planned. The convo tells the tale...
Shanty Man saves the day!

Day 26 -- Hidden Plex
One final entry for day 26. One of my corp mates found a gorgeous hidden mining plex. There was a lot of valuable asteroids. Such plexes can only be found through exploration.
The Glow Smartbomb practice Gneiss asteroid
This is DANGER CLONE signing out, safe and sound and back in the empire. Maybe I should start a new salvage franchise...
But Regular Me would never allow it...
Perhaps I can do something about that.

Day 28 û A plot foiled
DANGER CLONE tried to kill me today. I had a very strange clone jump and came out of hyper sleep rather groggy. As soon as I woke up, I started getting convos from Valk79:
Will Concord kill me?
I check my eve-mail and see that its trueà
WhoÆs running the show here?
DANGER CLONE wants me dead. But IÆm too smart for him. The memories are all slowly coming back. I switch my death clone to Masolle, and grab a tougher ship and head for the franchise in Friggi.
More money
Finally, I arrive in Friggi. Valk79 is a little cagey on whether heÆs actually going to pod me. I take no chances. IÆm driving the Dread Lecturer todayùmy Navy Vexor. I canÆt imagine that Valk79 has anything that can scratch it. The salvage destroyer, on the other hand, would have been killed quite easily.
Assassination attempt foiled
I am safe, Valk79 lost his ship, and DANGER CLONE fails in his attempt at taking over my life.
I live another day

Day 29 û Ratting in Sev3rence
I didnÆt want to jump back to DANGER CLONE for a while, so I spent the day ratting in Providence space with a friend from the Sword of the Stars universe (SotS). IÆm a long time TAR writer there, so Nickerson and me go way back. Nickerson (and his alt Nickermarr) has been on Eve for quite a while, but hasnÆt got out much. We decided to do some ratting in KBP7-G, home of the Pig Sty. Nickerson had brought plenty of firepowerà
Meet up for ratting
It was kind of fun zipping around this Sansha battleships totally unmolested. The rats had aggroed on Nickersonn and I was left ignored. Plenty of salvage to pick upà Sansha give off armor plates, which are like gold, 140k each.
Do not try this at home.
When we jumped in, there was a bit of a tense moment. The folks at the gate had a freakin huge camp going on. I didnÆt stick around long enough to find out why. I presume it was to filter out the ôundesirableö element from the playground that is Providence. There was certainly an undesirable element they let slip through. I got ambushed while salvaging a wreck and there goes another Tour busà
I alerted the local authorities as to what happened, but my murderer kept denying it. Luckily, Buyenne is one of the readers of this blog. I mentioned the name and that seemed to convince folks that I wasnÆt scamming. Anyhow, I didnÆt stick around to see what happened. HereÆs a pic of me beating it in the cheapest ship I could find, the ôToenail Clippingö

Day 30 û A Tour of Hjoromold
IÆm planning on setting up salvage franchises in all of the COSMOS clusters and spend more time visiting the sights and fights of these picturesque corners in the next few weeks. On Day 30, I had just time to scout out Hjoromold in a Tour Bus. Here are some highlights:
Legendary Stronghold Machine head has a great backstory Lord Bastion
The minmater COSMOS cluster seems to have the best backstory of any of the clusters IÆve visited so far. I think the tribal nature of Minmater culture lends itself well to mythic storytelling. It reminds me a bit of Battlestar Galactica.
Anyhow, almost caught up to the patchà

Day 31--Patch day
I didn't play much on patch day. The server was down.
I only spent some time moving salvage to market in the evening so I could finally afford the Heavy Salvage Myrmiddon I had a friend build for me. Finally, Valk79 put me over the top when he paid back a loan. Perhaps he's luring me into complacency? The guy still wants to kill me. Luckily, he can't fly a decent ship yet.

Day 33 -- Exploring the Amarr COSMOS cluster
Working Skeleton comet is profitable, but a little repetitive. I find myself doing stunts...
Running the rings
I finally had my all my materials to put together a salvage franchise in Koona, near the Amarr COSMOS cluster. Today, I explored all the sights in the area...
There's a level 5 public complex in Chanoun. One of the few level 5s in high sec in eve. You can bring your battleship here. Simorgh DaSilva reports lots of valuable loot and salvage.
Khodesa approach -- note the overview
I wasn't too keen on sticking around the plex very long. Luckily, a pilot and his salvager alt were working a spawn, taking all the aggro for me.
Raven Fight
Although Khodesa boasts some of the fiercest opponents in a high-sec complex, the setting leaves something to be desired. Its just a couple of big nasty spawns and some tinker-toy buidings.
Tinker Toy military base
If you want sights, head over to nearby Chanoun...
Governer's Audience Chamber
And don't forget to stop by Munory and check out the campfire...
Giant Campire in space
All I need now are some giant marshmallow roids.
There's an imperial palace in Ni****d. Too bad you can't get to it. Instead, you can cast your eyes on the Guard citadel, a rather unique Amarrian station.
Guard citadel
There's plenty of NPCs floating around the citadel. Some even will hand out missions.
Guards on patrol
One system over in Aphi, there's a "Civic Court Plaza." I was quite underwhelmed with this glorified slave pit.
Civic Plaza or Den of Despair?

Day 34 -- The Cemetery
I visited a bunch of "prime" worlds in Amarr and Khanid space. While there is a bunch of backstory behind these systems, there's not a whole lot to see other than planets and stations. The Molea system is another story entirely, though.
Some years ago, someone started collecting frozen corpses and hanging them in a great cluster in Molea. The practice spread and soon there was a huge graveyard. As CCP changed the rules on biomass persistance the cemetery needed to be upgraded. Corpses were put in secure containers. When secure containers got a timer, a POS was added. I've heard it rumored that CCP stepped in to make the cemetery permanent when POS secure containers also got a timer. Either that, or someone goes from container to container and touches the corpses once a month. In any event, heres a pic of the strange player-made sight:

Edited by: Harper Hendee on 05/09/2008 21:42:33 I need some more ideas on where to go next. I've just about exhausted the possibilities of the COSMOS clusters (still a couple of sights left, though). Here's some of the possibilities in the future:
1) Tour into the only friendly 0.0 space available to me (hint: its in the NE)
2) Try and find the mother of all wreckage heaps in Great Wildlands from this article: http://myeve.eve-online.com/news.asp?a=utype&tyid=4&cid=20000140
3) Do a suicide run through BOB down to executive outcomes and back. See this map for clarification of what that means.
4) Explore some more non-COSMOS complexes: 4.a) Tsuna's Private Compound 4.b) Kazka Blockade 4.c) Mul-Zatah monastery 4.d) Angel's Red Light district 4.e) Old Meanie 4.f) Gallente Asteroid Miners 4.g) Nefantar Ruins 4.h) Drone plexes
5) Do some exploration w/ scanners to see what pops up.

Day 35 û The Azure Canyon
IÆve had a pair of tourist tickets to the Azure Canyon (also called the Azure Chasm) for about a month now. I spend much of my non-travel time in nearby Deltole, as a good place to make isk in a non-boring manner. I decided to head over to Colelie to have a look at the canyon now that I had some free time. First, though I needed an ally to help me brave the dangers of the level 4 plex. Enter Ural Almerhas.
Ural contacted me near the start of the galactic tour. He was interested in something a little more exciting than running missions in Empire space. I directed him to CVA in Providence. It looks like he took my advice and has been happily ratting, mining, and fighting in Providence ever since. His shield tanked Drake was the perfect buffer to soak up DPS from the angry rats in the Canyon.
We met up in Deltole, along with another reader, Bolvor. Bolvor is still fairly new and was flying a cormorant, so this level 4 was likely a little tough for him. When we got to the plex entrance, I realized I had left the tickets back in Oursulaert. Never fear, there were some scalpers presentà
Scalpers at the Entrance
The entrance spawn only drops 2 passes, so if you have a larger group, youÆd best plan ahead. The acceleration gate requires a Tourist Pass, so Bolvor had to turn back to Skeleton Comet, while Ural and I headed in to the first room. I think the scalpers respawn rate keeps the plex from getting overly camped.
First glance at first room. Check out the big rat
Alerus Exire
Stuff to blow up
Green Pleasure Gardens
Off to the next room.
The second room is a bit harder. There were no battleships that I saw, but Brutix battlecruisers occur in pairs. And of course there is the Azure Stoneà
First look at second room
Brutix rat
Azure Stone 1
Azure Stone 2
Ural found a janitor
I found some Exotic Dancers!
Make sure to watch for the named rat. HeÆs got a Black Market keycard that he drops. Unfortunately, thereÆs only one of him. So Ural and I took the other gate to the Ion Field, since it requires no pass. The Ion field is a little disappointingà
Spider drones, batteries, and a snippy agent
We warped back to the entrance and worked our way through again, hoping for another Black Market keypass. No luck. I decided to brave it solo to snap some pics. Luckily, it had already been mostly cleared by another plex runner.
Entrance to Black Market
Enemies in the black market (mostly wrecks, thoughà) A prison at the Black Market?!?
All in all, Azure Canyon is a pleasant romp. ThereÆs plenty of things to shoot and its very doable with a partner. My only issue was that some of the quest items had been looted and not respawned yet. All the rooms had clearly been visited before, so the spawns werenÆt quite as powerful as they might otherwise be. If you are interested, head on over.

Day 36 û The Search for the Elders begins
IÆve got a new wild goose to chase. The elder fleet! IÆve been reading news items for the last month along the lines of ôThe Elder Fleet went that-a-way!ö ôMy brother got killed looking for the Elder Fleetö and ôI found the wreckage of the pilgrimsö
IÆve decided to take a look myself. This article put me over the edge. A salvager finding a huge wreckage field sounded like the land of milk and honey to me. It even listed the constellation.
I put together a probeship so I could use scan probes. What better ship than a Minmater Probe, I thoughtà And I started at the beginning, Sarum Prime.
A few months ago, a fleet of minmater ships shows up from nowhere and hosed concord at Yulai. IÆve already visited the graveyard there. From there, they moved on to Sarum Prime. They were defeated there by Lady Jamyl Sarum. SheÆs the Amarrian Empress now I guess. Since then, the Elder fleet has been on the run, last seen heading towards the Great Wildlands.
So I passed from Amarr Prime to Sarum Prime and asked some simple questionsà
Anyone seen the Elder Fleet?
I really donÆt have much experience scanning, and its an entire constellation, looking for who knows what. I needed help. I asked one of our newest alliance membersà
You game?
Seemed like Knight4Her would be a good choice. He was looking for dangerous tasks on alliance chat. Anyhow, time will tell if he gets me any more leads.
I decided to set out the Great Wildlands myself. Normally, IÆd relegate this sort of thing to DANGER CLONE. But heÆs in the wrong area of space and thereÆs that whole thing of trying to kill me by hiring Valk79. I took a deep breath and stepped back into the unknown of 0.0 spaceà
Right into a bubble!
Thank goodness this bubble was from a NRDS crowd trying to keep GW safe. The Foundation alliance is to GW what CVA is to Providence. ThereÆs just not as many stations out in GW. They figured my search fo the elders to be a wild goose chase. Maybe theyÆre rightà
Harper hits the happy camp
I finally arrived at the constellation. I visited every system in turn looking for big signs that said ôElder Fleetö. No such luck. So I headed to the farthest corner and started scanning. I got 1 UNKNOWN hit under cosmic anomalies. I needed to be talked through it over chatà
Simorgh gives me advice on my fruitless search.
Eventually, the timer dinged and I needed to hang it up for the day. No Elders, and I have a feeling my scanning skills are woefully inadequate for the job.

Hi Harper,
I know you usually have specific destinations in mind to visit. But a while back I came across a sight that I thought might be worth a mention to you.
I had been working on my mining abilities and had taken some work for agents of the Minmatar Mining Corporation working out of Uttindar. I had been asked to go harvest some gas clouds. I made my way to the provided location found the clouds and turned on the gas cloud harvesters.
I had a look round as the harvesters did their job. The gas cloud has the remains of some heavy mining equipment but as I examined it I saw something glitter briefly, way off the beacon. Upon investigation I found a black cuboid shape about 180km away from the beacon, just turning slowly about it's axis. It was huge, dwarfing my Mining Barge as I drew up close to it. The glitter I saw was a brief reflection of the Uttindar Star off one of the faces. It was very impressive and quietly majestic.
Worth keeping your eyes open in case you happen to be passing some gas clouds.
Fly Safe.

This is DANGER CLONE. I donÆt want to be in high sec anymore. Jita sucks. IÆm trapped. No one bought the Navy Vexor. I purchased an Amarr Arbiter that I canÆt fly for another day. The talk on local is absolutely inane.
Strange news in my inbox today. Turns out that IÆve got a friend in Thorn alliance. The only 0.0 alliance that I am blue to. Checking out the Thorn alliance sounds way better than sitting in Jitaà.
An opportunity arises...
I forget the Arbitrator. I need to get out of here. I slap together a Nature Photographer stealth salvager and get the hell out of Jita!
So long, Jita! Keep yer implants!
I set my course for Atioth, a Thorn sov system with no recent kills. Should be a good place to startà

I for one, would like to commend you sir. I have been for 6 months and then had to leave for 5 months and have been back now for 2 weeks. I had never thought of touring as you have. I thought of exploring but wanted to wait until I had sufficient iskies to do so. I have just realized that I didn't have to do all that skilling and iskies build up. Your story and style of writing is very well done. I enjoy your diary entries very much. As so many have said, get a blog going and do videos if ya can. Keep up the good work young man o>

It is still in the beginning so give him time.
