A no spoiler review of Empyrean Age by Tony Gonzalas
My Review
I bought it off of Amazon.uk.co and got it in like 1 week awesome : )
It was so well written, great characters and he had a way of describing them and what they did that was unique IMO.
When I log into EVE now it seems even more real.
When I just read one chapter I could go to bed and dream about it as the thought of what happened was great to think about and for days after
I can see this becoming a series of Movies like Star Wars but a more adult rated R kind of Movie
I've read some other Sci-Fi nooks not including Star Wars and they were not as good as Emp Age, Star Wars is just as good but in a different way.
I also thing this nook is original how it was written and its content and unlike any other Sci-Fi story ever written.
A true classic IMO.

I am not completely done with reading through yet, but so far its quite good.
If you take into account that it was Tony's first book ever and that it had limitiations like:
- fill the gaps of knowledge in eve history etc for eve players - explain in detail most aspects of eve technology etc, that most of us readers already knew, which are moments that interrupt the story a bit but might be needed for new players or simply readers without connection to the eve universe at all. - and ofc the story has some points which are pre-set by the game, and which doesn't make sense in a real world. Like CONCORD behaviour and stuff. So logic-holes were unavoidable.
I definately can see a movie or even movie series made out of this. And other than the usual popcorn-action-space-warfare shit that is produced nowadays (like the newish episodes 1 and 2, 3 was abit better), the eve universe has vast depth and stories apart from spaceships. And ofc the desired Alien/Blade runner flair. Just don't make it "oh-look-all-these-pretty-colours-we-can-do-with-todays-movie-technic" star wars flair. That would be utterly wrong.
To get things started.. Eve got like 230k subscribers roughly?? So if every subscriber would pay a 100$... well, I guess it would be at least enough to pay some damn good movie script writers and experienced storytellers to create an awesome script for a mid sized studio and get things started with the money. hehe

I've always loved the EVE fiction, it has always had a bit more of a 'high brow' approach to the sci-fi genre. The book was a wonderful idea. If any sci-fi story need more media, it's EVE.
Oh yeah, and the book is good so far!

Edited by: Cutter Isaacson on 17/07/2008 10:36:22 So far I've read the novel three times. I wish I could say I was bowled over by it but I'm not. It isn't that the book is lacking in any one thing in particular, but that it just doesn't shine the way I expected an EVE book to shine.
But, having said that, Mr Gonzales does do a very good job of bringing life to the characters, as well as eliciting a feeling of foreboding. I have tried explaining to various friends over the years, exactly what it feels like to play EVE. That feeling of tension, of mystery and even awe that one gets from piloting massive starships around a vast universe, but I always failed.
Now however I can just lend them my copy of Empyrean Age. Tony has done a fairly good job of putting those feelings down onto paper, thus finally giving non EVE players a chance to glimpse what it is that we all love. I have some problems with the book in that there do appear to be some rather obvious inconsistencies, as well as some quite awful typos ('Jamyl Saturn' anybody?) but the majority of these can be over-looked.
Sadly there is one thing that cannot be over looked. This novel costs ú10.99 for the paperback and ú18 for the hardback, which I am normally happy to pay without question, however on this occasion I have doubts. I stated that the novel is good, great even in some respects, but for me its biggest failing is that it feels like a short story. It doesn't read like an ú18 novel should.
This isn't entirely down to Tony's ability to write, but more due to the fact that his novel had to be shoe-horned into the history and future of this game. If there are to be more novels like this based on EVE, I would hope that much more thought would be put into how, or possibly even why, they should be written.
For the tl;dr crowd: I like the novel, its a good read but it feels like an epic story that's been split up into short stories, re-written and then crammed back into a novel again. My advice? Find someone with a copy and read theirs before you decide to buy or not.

Picked it up in Forbidden Planet in ye olde London and its not bad. Not exactly going to win any prizes but it didn't fall into the pew pew before plot trap.
I do have a few things that did irk but since this is a no spoiler thread will keep those to myself.

I'm almost done reading it. So far it's no Ender's Game, but that's not to say that I haven't enjoyed every moment of it.
Obviously can't say what it's like from the perspective of someone who is unacquainted with the Eve universe, but the way it covers the events that transpired in the past few months of our time in Eve is something unique. __________

I'll just stop you there. The story as such was pretty good. It was engaging and interesting, and filled in quite a lot of backstory I never knew. But my GOD does Mr Gonzales need a decent editor. I lost count of the number of times I thought "Tony, I don't think that word means what you think it means" or "Wait, that sentence makes no sense".
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

ôBy FarSpace Any one else want to tell me what they think about the book, but with no spoilers?ö Overall I enjoyed it but there are too many things that donÆt make sense and should have been explained, others that are imposable and never should have happened. Personally I donÆt think the last chapter should have been in the book or if it had to be in the book it should have been longer.
