Ok my PC runs great in Eve up until about 60 or so players. When there are more players than that, in a large fleet I have a wierd performance issue.
My PC runs perfect except for every 10 seconds the game crawls to half speed for a second, then it goes double speed as though its 'catching' back up and then its fine for the next 10 seconds and it repeats the same thing.
specs: core2 duo 3ghz nVidia 8800GTS 2gig DDR 2 ram windows vista
running 1440x900, 24 bit colour with all effects on except for HDR (causes wierd warp tunnel graphics bug)
I can't see my CPU being the limiting factor. I wonder if its my video card struggling but as I say it runs perfectly fine for the 10 seconds in between the problem I have. Also, don't have this problem in smaller fleets/gangs so don't think its a memory problem (don't have any anti-virus running in background)
Ideas?

update: I tried dropping all my graphics settings right back to as low as possible and it has made no difference to the problem.

No real clues, but what kind of Internet Connection do you have? Your ISP may be the culprit.

I'm on cable broadband. It doesn't seem to be a connection issue, more a local issue.

I also have this exact issue. After a few panicked experiments while camping with fleet, I discovered the problem was.... sound! CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + F12 (or disabling audio in esc > options) fixed it for me. Raises the question whether CCP should have a serious look at the audio code
Hope this works for you, too. -omg-

If it's an onboard soundboard I can understand, they basically used to suxxors bad when it came to performance. Newer motherboard's built in sound may not have this problem, but I usually avoid this and go with a separate soundcard.
It can easily be soundcard drivers than CCP audio code that causes this.
What are your sound hardware?

You're right, I use onboard sound on a motherboard some years old. The only way to test if that's the problem really, is to try a number of other games without sound on for comparison, and I haven't done that with any game except Eve! -omg-

Edited by: Eric Fuhrmann on 14/07/2008 07:22:34 I haven't had a chance to try this yet but for reference, I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P rev3.3 using onboard sound. I am going to have a look if there's newer drivers available and if that fixes the problem.

Had the same problem, killing sound fixed it
Can someone in CCP look into this?

What's your sound hardware? What should CCP look into more exactly, bad vendor drivers? Insufficient hardware?

I've had a similar problem. Game ran smooth until i warped to places like planets and gates then it wouldn't 'chug' but run really slow like in slow motion for a few seconds as I arrived at the destination then quickly return to normal game playing pace again. Its not network lag and its not client lag cause I used to run the premium on my older machine which ran perfectly fine.
Problem was my 8800GTX SLI cards. For some reason eve doesn't like SLI and seems to have slowdowns if you are running eve with your graphics running in SLI mode. If you go to your NVIDIA video options and turn the setting (you can set a setting for eve.exe so rest of your games aren't effected) to use single GPU mode then perhaps your game might run normal again. That's what fixed it for me anyway. Took me forever to find out the solution for it. I wish they implemented true dx10 in the premium client or at least are thinking of supporting dx10 in the future cause this dx9 stuff isn't really very compatible with most of the newer video cards :(

Edited by: Eric Fuhrmann on 18/07/2008 23:05:29 Updating to the latest drivers hasn't helped. I have to run eve without sound to fix this problem in large fleets.
I have submitted a bug report for this problem. I suggest you all do the same, specifying your specific sound card and driver version etc. so that CCP can hopefully get it fixed.

I'm used to onboard sound being crap (in several games, no just EVE), so I use a separate Creative-card, allways.

This is a problem since the beginning of Eve, it is never going to be fixed. Everyone has this issue in some form or another, period. The Eve Client simply can't handle large fleet battles.
