I was docked messing with the market and a random character suddenly opens trade with me, and gives me an Omen, Harbinger & another ship, some drones, ammo etc. They accept the trade & I accept it too, I figure why not? Then they message me saying they meant to give it to their alt. I didn't figure anyone intended to give me free stuff and it wasn't worth enough to be a jerk over it, so I gave it back to them.
My question is do people really make such obvious mistakes or is there some type of scam tied into this that I could have/did fall for? Or is that just with contracts? Sorry still fairly new to the game so I'm just curious. Thanks. =)

63....if you note, mine has nothing to actually do with that thread. Just me agreeing with Letias, that the whole reserving shares, since you dont want to do the risk analysis yourself, is silly. I guess that makes it 62, counting Letias. --

I've done that only once. I thought I'd more or less avoid it, but when I was training up a tonne of alts I started getting jack of having to constantly login and change their skill train and stuff. I was giving money from a main to an alt for implants or something, and the guest list moved right before I right-clicked.
I just shrugged, cursed myself, and congratulated him on his gain. Very nice of you to give it back though. I probably would too, unless there was a specific reason against it (like I didn't like his alliance or something).

If this happened to me... I guess it would depend on the value of what was traded. BC and down I'd give back, but BS or T2 anything is staying in my hanger. And to answer your question, yes, people really are that stupid.

As I said, it was only maybe 60 million worth of stuff, not enough to be a jerk about or ruin someone's day over. I feel better knowing it's just an honest mistake and not someone trying to scam me in some way, so I don't feel bad about giving it back (I would if it was some type of scam). Thanks for the replies.

While a hint overstated, my point stands. Not one conspiracy theory or serious bit of number crunching in the first 60-something posts. Very sad....
And in the interest of full disclosure I've almost done this a couple of times and the OP's a good guy for sending the stuff back.

I post here a lot, and no one listens to me either, I always seem to make too much sense in that cricket on your shoulder sort of way. --

I've done it myself, it depends on how busy the station is with the Guests list moving up and down all the time.
You right click to trade with someone then 3 or 4 people dock/undock and you end up choosing the wrong one.

In Jita, I have seen a pilot go through (apparently) the entire list of guests docked at IV-4 CNAP, opening a trade window with each. Perhaps some people sent goods? I saw this as begging, but maybe it qualifies as a scam attempt in some minds, since it was a specific invitation to pilots to take advantage of lag and possible human error.

Yeah, people are that dumb.
A person handed over a bunch of T2 component BPO's, some materials and a few components.
I gave it back though.

Well yeah, people are dumb. Amazingly so, sometimes.
Giving it back is rather nice, though I imagine thats hardly a guarantee. I have to admit, if I randomly was given a huge pile of loot, giving it back might depend largely on how much I like that alliance...

Actually, the preferred variant (since you can't use smartbombs near the station) is to tell people that you're going to eject from a valuable ship and that everyone who wants a chance at it should approach you in a pod asap. Zzz research towers Direrie NEW: Liekuri

I see we're proving it in this thread too. A demonstration of fitness such as releasing the identity of a main, details of the prospectus, or an audit by a third party with some reputation isn't risk analysis, but is relevant data for a risk analysis. Given the structure of the IPO that stirred up this tempest in a teacup, ie, allowing people to reserve shares, but not allowing potential investors to audit the business directly, a reservation conditional on a third party audit makes some sense. It's more optimal than the misnamed "do the risk analysis yourself" argument since you have significantly more data to work with.
To summarize, the published details of a third party audit plus doing the risk analysis yourself is superior to just doing the risk analysis yourself.
If one wants to avoid reservations conditional on a third party audit in an IPO, then simply change the structure of the IPO so either the IPO issuer doesn't accept them, makes all reservations conditional on a future audit, or arranges the audit ahead of the IPO. Otherwise, it's just like complaining about 0.01 underbidding. Why should someone change a superior tactic simply because someone else doesn't like it? It's IPO pvp.

I made that mistake once, (the guests list moves around way too much). I had the trade window up with all the stuff in it, and accepted...forutnately the person was afk and gave me a minute to notice my mistake and cancel the trade :)
now I definitely double check everything.

I trade between main and alts using People & Places (iskies) or contracts (stuff), as I'm sure many others do.
Prevents the guest list from moving out from underneath you...

you gave it back are you insane, that was what a cruiser, BC, and drones, i honestly would have probably kept it, unless you clicked accept immediatley, that guy had to have known he was giving you all that crap, because if it was his alt, he would have had to click accept on it
your a really nice guy, why dont you put this on crime and punishment, you might get more responses there, i mean, after all, the pirates are gona know about all the scams right? . . . .

for this, you may have accidentally opened a trade w/ someone, but when i trade w/ people in station, i check the name once i open the trade to make sure its right, put the items in and check again, then ask if the person has it all (you cant do that w/ an alt, but still) anyway, point is i check, this guy was very absent minded if he just blindly opened up a trade and through everything in at once immediatley and clicked accept, as i said, i check it at least twice specifically to avoid this
