From: "EVE Online" <support@eve-online.com> Subject: EVE Online - War Is Upon Us
WAR IS UPON US!
>>> EMERGENCY ACTION MESSAGE <<<
SENDER:? CONCORD DIRECT ENFORCEMENT DIVISION
GENERAL BROADCAST
MESSAGE READS:
TO ALL PILOTS:
CONCORD HAS RECEIVED AUTHENTICATED COMMUNICATIONS FROM AMARR EMPIRE, CALDARI STATE, GALLENTE FEDERATION AND MINMATAR REPUBLIC MILITARY REPRESENTATIVES CONFIRMING THAT A STATE OF WAR HAS BEEN DECLARED WITHIN THE NEW EDEN CLUSTER.
DIRECT ENFORCEMENT DIVISION ASSETS HAVE BEEN REDEPLOYED TO PROTECT CONCORD FACILITIES. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY FOR IN-SYSTEM PROTECTION OF NEUTRALS AND EMPIRE NATIONALS HAS SHIFTED TO LOCAL MILITARY AUTHORITIES.
CONCORD CANNOT ASSURE THE SAFETY OR SECURITY OF ANY SHIP IN TRANSIT AT THIS TIME.
PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM CONCORD DIRECTORATE:
DIPLOMACY HAS FAILED. OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL.
>>> MESSAGE ENDS <<<
- - - - - -?- - - - - -?- - - - - -?- - - - - -?- - - - - -?- - - - - - With the launch of Empyrean Age, the newest expansion for EVE Online, pilots can now engage in solo, small group or even fleet battles any time you want via a new feature called Factional Warfare.? Players have asked for easier, more accessible PvP fights and to have the ability to find friends to fight with without making the commitment to 0.0 space and Alliances. CCP has answered with Factional Warfare - war is upon New Eden and your help is needed.
Enlist today and add 14 free days to your account. http://cp20.com/Tracking/[...] ? Log in, and see what you've been missing.
Players can now enlist in any of the four empire militias, granting access to special missions into contested space and epic PvP action where you can engage in combat against opposing militia forces in high security space - without CONCORD interference.? Each combat zone is full of missions built for new and veteran players alike - including those accessible only to pilots in inexpensive frigates.
Enlisted pilots will also be able to fight for the control of entire star systems in designated combat zones. Militias battle over control bunkers in each zone which can help direct? that system's defenses. Capturing and controlling these systems is critical to determining who will win and who will lose in the war raging across New Eden.
We want you back.? If you left EVE Online because you found it difficult to find PvP action, we are confident Factional Warfare solves that problem.? If you haven't played EVE Online recently you will also be surprised by the incredible new graphics released last year in the Trinity expansion as well.
Offer valid until July 31st, 2008. If user converts their Trial account into a Paid Subscription, payment options include a valid credit card, debit card or direct debit.
-----
This looks very "official" and obviously they have some subscriber information(?), but cp20.com does not seem to be affiliated with CCP. If they are, this is still odd...
Can anyone at CCP shed some light on this?

CCP has often used weird addresses when sending out mail, I wouldn't be surprised if this one was sanctioned by CCP. Better not risk it until we hear from them, though.

What is odd is that nowhere on eve-online.com there is a reference to this and surely they would link to an official page about this offer?

NEGATIVE, I've never seen addresses that weren't from CCP owned domains. This one's not legit.

After a closer look, this does seem to be authentic.
The URL in the E-Mail leads to a HTTP redirect to https://secure.eve-online.com/login.aspx?id=reactivate14dayfree ... now unless something's completely broken about HTTP / current browsers, I don't see how they could exploit this XSS-style or so.

and a quick search on the internet reveals that godaddy either facilitates scammers or are so lax that scammers know to make use of them.

Second thought: of course something entirely different might happen depending on the HTTP client used... If I didn't use an exploitable browser, I might have seen something harmless instead of the actual exploit.

Godaddy don't support or sanction scammers, theyre a domain registrar in the US/Canada. Theyre like 123reg in the UK - And like any registrar, if you register your name with them and host your services elsewhere they can't do anything about how you use the address. ------------- Insert Sig Here |

I too feel it is appropriate to blame Winterblink in this case. Mainly because I always like to be able to blame Winterblink. The fact I haven't had a real reason to blame Winterblink is beside the point.

Back to the topic from Wrangler, what's the funny part is that this is being posted to active accounts. Couldn't you just plain add the 14 days of extra game time without any hassles?
Also, down with CONCORD and boost the empire navies a bit and let them take CONCORD's role. If FWers are crying foul for getting popped in hostile hisec, then make the anti-criminal police ships a tad tougher than the "military" ships. While it doesn't make absolutely any sense, hey, it's a game.

Thats a pretty valid question, why was it e-mailed to current accounts - not to expired accounts only? Does that mean we get extra 14 days if we login/engage in FW?
