You know it is pretty sad, I suppose I am not privy to channels in eve, but the other day I was having an argument with an anti-MMO friend of mine about the merit of EVE online as a game. As part of the argument he asked me to find a single intellectual discussion taking place across the channels of eve. I took a look in some of the usual places, but in the forest of shallow Chuck Norris humor and equipment talk, I did not find a single intelligent discussion taking place. Could have been the time, but I think that a dedicated channel is warranted, and I implore anybody who has a brain, and some free time mining or something to join mine: "scire quod sciendum" (or in extreme danger...of sounding totally pathetic) invite me to theirs if there is one that I simply have not stumbled onto yet...

or, you know, realize most the public chats are public cause they're not worth anything.
the only serious conversations i have are with friends on our corp room.

Tell your buddy I said "lol." ___________________________________________

I think "intelligent" channels are usually relegated to corporation channels, since the members generally know each other better, and are able to discuss more "serious" topics as you are describing. Your channel is, however, an intriguing concept.

I suppose that is the thing, i just switched from a large corporation to a much smaller one working privately, between myself and two people i know outside the matrix. but between three people, discussion gets a little boring after a while.

you can join R-HUANG.
It's our corps recruitment channel.
We only take minmatar players, but we have lots of non minmatar members we've meet over the years that log into that channel just to chat with us.

It's a video game.
And your friend wants to judge its merits by whether or not their is an intellectual discourse about the meaning of life or maybe just Einstein's Theory of Relativity taking place in a chat channel?
And you bought into that nonsense?
lol@you AND your friend.

Just tell him eve is a video game not an irc chat room or something. Besides you find "intellectual discussion" on irc, IM, counter strike, any online none mmo game, or any single player game.

Get a dictionary, the spelling on your channel header in game is not good considering the proposed discussions ;)

Dude. We fly internet spaceships.
I save my "serious" conversations for people I'm not trying to blow up at the moment. :)
I can just picture it now...
Victim> Oh noes! I'm scram'ed! Please, let me go! What do you want, ransom? Me> No ransom, but... tell me, what are your thoughts on the writings of Ayn Rand? Do you subscribe to the philosophy of Objectivism? Victim> ??? Me> Well, let's start by discussing "Atlas Shrugged". As an industrialist, tell me how John Galt's... Victim> *self destruct sequence initiated* Me> Wait! Wait! Maybe starting with "Atlas Shrugged" is too ambitious. We can talk about Rand's later works if you... Victim> *pop*

Perhaps it's because we just want a break from it all?
I fly to blow people up, pod them, steal their loot and salvage the glowing remains; I donĘt want to participate in discussions of life the universe and everything...

At which point you should have replied "the very second you can find me a single example of a spanner making a decent wedding dress."
He is clearly missing the whole point of playing a video game. By apply his own rigid set of definitions as to what is entertainment to MMO's he is simply and deliberatly closing off new and unexplored avenues of entertainment.
In other words he's probably a bit of an arse.

If you want intelligent discussion, you have to 'hang out' in intelligent areas.
I personally, don't expect the average discussion that takes place in Jita local, for example, to be all that enlightened. However, the exploration channel .. often interesting and thoughtful discussions go on there given that the channel is teaching an in game skill that is marginally more advanced than 'pew pew'.
Similarly, the Jove channel gets very interesting discussions. It also gets the, near hourly question "What is this channel for", but the people who ask that don't often stay around long enough to hear the answer.
I suggest, that it is all where you 'hang out in eve'. You want to find intelligent discussion, hang out where other intelligent people hang out.

Edited by: ReaperOfSly on 06/06/2008 18:09:49 OK, how's this for an intelligent discussion?
Given a group G, and elements A_i in G which satisfy the Artin relations [(A_i*A_i+1*A_i) = (A_i+1*A_i*A_i+1), A_i*A_j = A_j*A_i for |i-j|>=2], there exists a unique homomorphism f:B_n -> G such that f(sigma_i) = A_i. B_n is the n-braid group which is generated by sigma_i for i=1, 2, 3, ..., n and satisfying the Artin relations.
This is a theorem in the lecture notes of a reading course. It's not proved, but I want to prove it. Uniqueness I can do, existence is a bit trickier. So the discussion is how to prove existence of such a homomorphism.
Edit: on a more serious note, is there a maths channel in game? __________________________

Edited by: Straight Chillen on 06/06/2008 18:33:58 With out fail, everytime i log on one of my noob corp alts, there is some discussion regarding god, religion, or existance.
Not that it makes it an intelligent discussion, it more like missionaries in space.
Most intelligent discussions would take place on voice servers id imagine, as typing anything meaningfull takes too long to be fluid.
