I know the debate several times by some developers has been that we're all role playing, that we're all part of this story as it were. With the recent additions to making the game universe "feel more real" I get the distinct feeling that there's a level of inauthenticity, like I'm not really able to suspend disbelief.
I remember when I first started to play this game and got simply breath taken by the intro of EVE with the story about the EVE-universe and I wanted to believe, in fact so very much so I hoped that the narration would continue throughout the game. But the suspense you really look forward to in this game is player driven, political, and very far removed from the stories about factions and all that (which is described in back stories and news items), I do read them but since they do not affect me in any single way in my daily game life; they feel so irrelevant.
So with this very nice looking video of a nyx crashing into a station, it's like it really didn't matter because the game universe keeps going around you as if nothing happened. The world around you is stagnant, and there are few elements to draw you into suspending disbelief, and even though you may not take active part in the story, you could at least believe in it.
I'm not sure if it's a thing with MMO:s in that they're not really able to create a narration as effective as a single player game, but I would like to think of it like that. It would be really fun if there was this element in this game that drew you in like that intro with that song and those dystopic images and that narration. If the universe around you showed effect of what's going on, burning stations that didn't used to be, or whatever the clever game designers did to make it more in the face of every player.
Maybe it's because of me, maybe *I* am the one who is just too removed from it, I view everything from a distance and to me the game play is no more real than a random action game, you view it from a perspective and definitely are committed to your corp and the politics and wars surrounding that (all created by you) but the surrounding stories are irrelevant to me.
So my question is, am I alone feeling like this? I would think I am not.
The point of this small essay is that I wish for more content that draws the players in, that doesn't feel so... inauthentic. That the story become a part of your daily life in a credible way. People killing each other around stations is not it, that already is there. Something more... yes, that's what I'd like to see in the future.

I think Empyrean Age is an attempt to draw players more into the the "story" of EVE by making the factions and their more a part of players daily lives. I agree that for a long time now I have viewed the news stories as little more than an aside. Fun but not really relevant. Now it may become a lot more relevant to many people. Whether Empyrean Age does it for you is something only you can decide but it is a step in the direction you are talking about.
Once upon a time CCP did Events (note the big "E"). Like Jove strolling through the Empire (I recall entire player corps turning out and formation flying on a Jove battleship as it moved through their system). Those things were fun. Sadly, for various reasons, that dropped to the wayside. Perhaps this is a step in livening up.

I love the way they did it. Now they just have to remove that station to make the world change with the backstory.
I agree that the story is mostly player driven as it should be for 0.0 space, but the events involving empire players in the npc world is a step in the right direction.
I would have been there myself if I wasn't busy carving out a piece of 0.0 for our alliance.

Well, part of what you want was granted, go check it out.
OP: My only real concern is that we, the players, know a book is coming out, and there's a description of the book which gives us a little info, and some people may allow that Out og Game info affect their in game beliefs and choices. I think there'd be a few people with different in game views of the situation if we had no clue about the book, but that's just me.

I agree... it does feel inauthentic.
This kind of stuff should have been released on day one of the game, not 5 years into it. Also, if your going to have wars between the races, the least you could have done is making it so the controlled space of the 4 great empires could actually change hands in a large way. Not this kid glove crap.

The only way to feel a sense of authenticity would be to introduce tangible consequences that will inevitably affect your daily life. For example, I think alien space invaders (controlled by the developers or maybe a group of players they secretly recruited) creeping up to take over empire space would be good because then your empire space activities are going to get affected. Not only that, the playerbase may feel a greater sense of unity in the face of this foreign enemy.
Factional warfare, on the other hand, is optional, and I think it is this sense of option that is one of the reasons that makes it inauthentic.
Imposing factional warfare on all players would make it more authentic, but would probably alienate much of the playerbase who are in Eve precisely because of the freedom of what one can do in it.

funny thing is... to me this is why it feels real. Becuase like in real life you don't have to get shot at during war, even world wars.
only some areas have war and you don't have to get invovled but if your out tarveling you might have an issue.

To be honest I don't feel it is "inauthentic"
The Gallente swine have taken out home system and our home world a few hundred years later they crash a ******* mothership into one of our stations, ok it's time for war! now you gallente bastards will suffer the misfortune of getting on my bad side. Now you gallente bastards will die.

I know they have other things to work on...but I think it would be really good to put a face on the NPCs in space. Some little window that appears in the corner of the NPCs talking to you or whatever, kind of like in Freelancer. Then you'd feel like you're actually killing someone.
With immersion, I'd also like to see more than a couple buy orders at tome station. Maybe fluid empire borders, fluctuating system security status, actual pirate invasions (where NPCs would come camp a station) would be really cool.
