Originally by: El'Niaga Not to mention ethanol is not as clean as they tell you, it might do better with carbon dioxide emissions but it does produce other greenhouse gases in larger amounts than oil does....
Actually it burns very "clean". But ethanol does not magically appear. So the production methods used to make this ethanol is very important in calculating the potential drop in greenhouse gas emissions. Especially the energy sources used to distill the ethanol is important.
You also have to consider that the CO2 produced from crops is already a part of the carbon cycle and as such will not contribute to an increase in greenhouse gases.

In real life you hardly get anyone nerfing anything, while it could use some heavy nerfs here and there, till then and prolly till the end, real life sux, mkay?

Personally, I have high hopes for ambulation. I probably won't even be downloading the ambulation expansion, but I think it will add a lot of diversity to the eve-online community and that is a good thing.

This. It's called Spring (for the Northern hemisphere, at least). I personally have more to do and am more encouraged to do these things because of the nice weather.
The more people that are playing, the more you will notice that trend. During the month of June, you may notice a dramatic dip in the graph... that's cause Eve is dying...

if anything, i have experienced an increase in CUO over the past year. when i usually logon these days, there are more and more online. for a long time it was around 25k and now it is more like 30k. over 30k is no longer just on weekend afternoons, but just about every day during primetime. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |

They actually absorb O2 and give out CO2 at night because there's no light for them to do photosynthesis. So some respiration occurs because they still need some amount of chemical energy to keep alive. But overall you're right they are net consumers of CO2 and net producers of O2.

"Its the economy stupid" as they say.
And theres probably a element of truth in that. During periods of prosperity players will justify having 2, 3 maybe even more accounts - but ultimately they are a luxury: you can play eve without them.
I wouldnt be suprised to see that the slow down is that new players arent purchasing second accounts at this stage (not being cap capable yet they probably dont need them).

IIRC there was a huge recruitment drive by CCP during the last half of last year. CCP has stated that the average EVE player stays in the game for 7 months..... Coincidence?
There're probably a lot of other factors too.
For example, during the last 3 months, the political landscape of EVE has been roughed up quite a bit. For the players who only really logged in because of the social stuff in their corp/alliance, if that alliance breaks up, they may leave EVE completely (or at least for a while).
It could also be that the *****-down on macro-miners and ISK-sellers has caused loads of them to stop...
---
On a couple of RL things in this thread:
Oil: Anyone following the oil market will know it can only go one way, up! Production has more or less peaked, consumption is higher than production, and is climbing. Goldman-Sachs has predicted a $200/barrel oil price within a relative short period, and after that it gets bad. My personal prediction is gas prices of about $6/gallon by the end of the year in the US (might happen sooner). Europe will be hit much less hard because a high part of our gas price is tax.
Biofuel: While not very effective, they are effective in one way. They don't release CO2 that would otherwise be bound deep in the ground. Since there are way too many people on this planet as it is, having less food available is also a very good thing.

Originally by: El'Niaga The recent mandates by the US congress to produce corn based ethanol is directly responsible for the price increases in corn in the US in the early part of this year. This has driven up the cost of many related items including pork and chicken which use corn as a feed.
That's a huge lie, the producers are just using the misinformation to increase their prices. There are enough current studies showing that there is no direct connection between biofuel and food prices, it's all artificial.
It's not a lie. Corn is the most inefficient crop to use for ethanol production. Certain members of the US congress chose the crop to satisfy their special interest donors (the corn growers). Not to mention ethanol is not as clean as they tell you, it might do better with carbon dioxide emissions but it does produce other greenhouse gases in larger amounts than oil does....
In most rich parts of the world, unbelievable amounts of grain and other food are destroyed every year because of overproduction. Much of the stuff we produce is shipped with the government's (financial) backing to poor countries in order to prevent them from developing their own economy and local production.
The grain/food prices in the US/EU have nothing at all to do with biofuel. As for how "green" it is, I don't know/don't care. I just wanted to point out that food producers are using it as a poor excuse to rip people off.
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...

Personally I think, that beside the mentioned RL issues, it was the Trinity update:
New graphics were an eyecatcher and many people subscribed, but for the new ones this graphics was not "new" and so they found just the normal game like we older ones know it and as not the whole universe got a graphical update and the addon lacked in content, this may be a reason for some people to not extend their accounts.
Also there seem to be some nasty bugs that may harm the funfactor, like the messed up overview.
Also there was this free account thing, when you pay for another one (can't remember its name atm). Think many of these free accounts were not extended.

Edited by: Snaps on 15/05/2008 01:23:59 i think for some of our newer players they may be finding this game a bit over whelming for the first year or so.. i mean even a year in your still a wimp in eve terms. i think ccp needs too start mixing things up some.
the new story line is a good start comming out soon..
