Dear receiver, CCP the maker of EVE Online has asked Capacent Gallup to conduct a survey among current and former players of EVE. We hope you will be able to take a few minutes to answer the questionnaire, which is easy and accessible through this e-mail.
The purpose of the survey is to gain information about satisfaction, interest levels and suggestions that will then be used to improve the game. Capacent Gallup conducts the survey and guarantees confidentiality for all participants. CCP personnel will have no access to answers from individual participants only from the group as a whole. If you wish to continue to answer the survey, please click on the link below.
Your answers will significantly add to CCP¦s potential of making the EVE experience better.https://survey.confirmit.com/wix/p612294752.aspx?__sid__=yBbHVZ6v7JRFDB4ViKVPV-p9WfRapHCyHD7BIxmi1L96cQZbYL-qQfcKXv3iluuS0 If you have any questions or comments regarding the survey, please contact [email protected]

If you have any questions for CCP on the legitimacy of this survey, please contact [email protected].
Please note: No account or billing information will be asked for in this survey, but participants will be required to visit the Capacent website via a link in this email.

Nothing looks out out of the ordinary, doesn't ask for any sort of password or details.
CCP has been known in the past to use third-parties to send out mass-emails. Poor marketing, but almost certainly legitimate.

Edited by: Mithfindel on 23/04/2008 05:55:52 Seconding Lycos. And it isn't exactly poor marketing, someone else is having the tools ready to do this, so CCP doesn't need to create their own, just to submit a set of questions and e-mails to send the questionnaire to. The system generates a hash for each e-mail, so that people can't answer twice. Due to hashing, connecting e-mails to replies can't be done by the people analyzing the data, unless their personal information is submitted in the questionnaire. The whole thing is automatically created.
Of course, since it is third-party, you should be careful on what you answer, since while the only logical solution of having those arrive is co-operation with CCP, it might be a man-in-the-middle attack. The questions, however, usually reveal it. If it doesn't ask your name or other ID data, no account data, no CC data, then the only party to whom the information is truely useful is CCP.
EDIT: And oh, would you edit the link in the e-mail sent to you. It's stretching the page.

Take a look at the email again... The link we see in your post is the text in the mail but that does not mean that the link really points to the URL shown in the text...
They also use it on ebay fishing mails. THe link looks like https://ebay.com/.... but i you click on it you will end up on a site like http://xxx.xxx.xx.xx where t he x is an ip adress of an exotic country where the server is running. The website is an almost perfect match of the original so you would fall for the scam...
I suggest you wait for ccp to tell you it's safe Eve-online guide collection Web based version |

Only because we HAVE to be, I get at least 5 scam emails phishing for various login details, ebay, paypal, banks, on a daily basis, I never respond to anything that I haven't had official warning of in advance. |

How about, you add an email server to the cluster and teach these people how to use and access it, so it comes from a ccp server and makes people less paranoid ? |

Instead of CCP creating the conduct and sending them to us, they askes an external company that is specialized in these conducts. Perhaps they will create reports and hand them in to CCP. Therefore CCP perhaps has given the email adresses but it is for their use. Capacent Gallup will not use the adresses to send spam or other questionnaires. I hope they don't, otherwise i guess ccp has broken the law on privacy? It would be the same as if someone from CCP creates the questionnaire and send out the mails from inside CCP but i guess they aksed an external company with expertise on conducts... I see nothing wrong with this

It's a market research survey and not meant to sell you something. Companies use them to measure success (periodic customer satisfaction surveys), evaluate new ideas (ambulation, for instance), or to understand a marketing problem (over the past few months, a large number of customers with the name 'Oscar' have allowed their subscriptions to lapse).
Generally, someone from the company will create a random list of subscribers based on the needs of the research (left-handed Amarr who fly Pests to understand why they are attracted to Minnie battleships) and only supply the information that is needed to conduct the research and make a report.
Since this is the real world, both parties sign a legal contract that includes a Non-Disclosure Agreement for the vendor. The NDA generally does not allow the vendor to use the list for anything other than the client's research projects.
If you are truly paranoid about filling out the survey, walk to a local library or internet cafe and fill it out there :) ---------------- Mutatis Mutandis |
