EVE Online: Veteran Generations [Classification]
This is a break down of the veteran generations currently in EVE Online. It is entirely fictitious and based from my own observations of the universe. This is written in an immersive style, I know that the players did not actual invent the mentioned Items, but a lot of it was requested because ôThe Developers Listenö! God Bless them!
1st ôBETAö Generation Veteran: May 2003 û Oct 2004 The grandfathers of EVE online, who helped define EVE as we know it today requesting things like the corporation alliance system and fine tuning the mechanics we take for granted. Times back then times were hard with the battleship being king of the fleet and turning the table in any battle.
2nd Generation Veteran: Nov 2004 û Nov 2005 After the second genesis, the universe began to shape up with new corporations and alliances forming every day. The never ending conquest for universal domination was fuelled by the vast expanses of space, giving endless possibilities. As a result they needed a way to sustain life in the most desolate regions on the out skirts of the new world. Player Owned Starbases (P.O.Ss) where created and eventually absorbed into the standard arsenal of new Eden. These brave soles were the fathers of modern day Eden. They created the standard civilian class faction ship (Not the mutated concord/navy mutation), giving homage to there empires who paved the way for them.
3rd Generation Veteran: Dec 2005 û Nov 2006 With the creation of P.O.Ss, the children of modern day Eden, had to find a way to destroy them! This saw the creation capital ships in the form of dreadnaughts and carriers. Slowly as pilots spent days studying to pilot them, they began to spring up in fleet battles, eventually becoming standard fleet ships.
ôCurrentö Generation Veteran: Dec 2006 û Nov 2007 With technology ever advancing, the grandchildren of modern-day Eden, used the capital ship technology to create Super Capital Ships. Metal Behemoths that house entire colonies of people, know as Titans, and carriers with advanced drone control technology allowing for more fighters to be housed in there bays.
ôCurrentö Generation of Today: Dec 2007 - ??? 2008 Who knows, this is the youth of today! Only time will tell!
This is my understanding of the veterans and the generation of EVE player. People subscribe in between patches, but form what I have seen, a lot of the EVE subscribers join just after a new patch is released because of the coverage that it is given in the press and at things like E3, or MMOrpg.com.
I understand age is not everything in EVE, but the majority of players out there who are from the generations outlined (With exception to character auctions bought by the current generation of player), have experience with the game, and are the people who should be respected for there skill in game, and encyclopaedic knowledge of the game.
The question I pose is: -
öWhat generation are you?!ö

Hense Beta Generation
Im 3rd, but you can see a change in the style of game play as the generations go by. as the universe expands.
This is also a reason why I respect people older than me in game because with out them the game would be entirely different to how it is now. People seem to forget that in a way this game is tailor made to the request of the member base... --------------------

1st for me but I think we need a division in there. I joined in Feb 2004 and a lot of 'stuff' had already happened. I don't know where you'd draw the line but I'd put it at the point where the first BS took to the skies, perhaps. They were still expensive when I joined but not particularly rare or unusual. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

Glad I did, too, after taking so much time off. I miss my mega and the wallet, but it's coming back quick enough and I'm getting to re-learn and re-explore a lot of the changes since I first joined. The game really is very different, and no doubt will continue to change. -Guillome Renard, ACCS

Wonder what this list will be like in a few more years.
Also in a few more years will I be a great great great great grandfather?
Edit: There probably should be a division for when battleship rats and level 4 missions were introduced in Castor because these 2 things went a long way into making the eve economy what it is today.

Good move. I would consider myself second generation. The game was settled in and the die cast before I joined. Most aspects of game play were known and understood. Took me six months until I got my first BS. Ironically I was using it to do my salvaging until a month ago when I got a Golem. I wonder if I'll ever fly my 'Geddon again? -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

Should be 1 st generation Beta, 2nd generation Second Genesis, 3rd Generation Castor...etc
Merged them, becuase I see beta as when the worm hole first closed, and the few pilots were traped in the universe. It makes sense that beta is part of the Exodus/Second "Begining" Genisis.
Im just glad that you can all see what IM getting at with generations of player... --------------------

Well, I'd say 1st "Second Genesis Beta" except that's the oldest generation class you have and I felt very young when I first started (July/Aug 2003). Indeed I think I'll always think of those who were there "when it all started" as being a generation above those who came in later, however slight those few months of difference may seem from today!
"I've seen things you wouldn't believe. Dual MWD Ravens racing their own torpedoes towards the enemy; half a dozen BS trying and failing to kill ever-accelerating cruiser spawns; haulers flying 20+ jumps to the nearest refinery, again and again; people bribing agents to improve their standing and security; shield-tanked Apocs with artillery; roids so big you had to fly back to them on double or triple MWD because you bounced that far off them when you warped in; buying Miner-IIs for 3 million isk each and thinking I'd got a bargain; or even buying Harvesters at 135k and thinking this was expensive!
Those were the days..." |
