First off, no I dont have the answers. I am not a software engineer (web developer, but nothing close to games). All I can do is ***** and whine about the problem.
This is a typical fleet fight for me. Note that I live in New Zealand, so its the exact opposite side of the world than the servers. I dont know how my lag relates to other peoples, but this is what its like for me.
My fleet jumps through a gate, enemy fleet starts warping in on other side. Local is now at 190. Battle ensues, I manage to lock a few ships and get some shots in. Soon the lag becomes too much - my clicks arent responding for (I counted it out) 56 secs, sometimes longer. FPS has just dropped to 1/5fps. I start aligning, which takes another full minute or two, someone starts hitting me, and I hit warp to a pos.
My FPS doesnt improve while in warp. I drop out of warp, and the POS isnt there. It doesnt appear for another 5 minutes! This whole time, my corp chat messages act like the flood protection has kicked in, and each message typed takes a couple of minutes to send.
We seem to be winning at the battle, from what I hear on vent (other people must be getting less lag!), so against my better judgement, I attempt to warp back. It takes another full minute to initiate warp, by which point Ive tried to cancel warp, which fails, and I am warped in anyway. 4 minutes later some of the battle loads, however, I am now getting 1/10fps. Thats one frame per 10 seconds. I hear primaries, and try to lock things, but my lock keeps dropping. FC is yelling for more dps, but I cant provide it, as my lock keeps dropping off for no reason, and thats if I can even click anything with my FPS.
I start getting hit. From this point until Ive successfully clicked the warp button, Im into structure. I never warp out, in fact, I dont see any more frames, I press ctrl-q, nothing happens. I hit ctrl-alt-del and end process, and windows tells me that eve has crashed. I close vent and go do something else.
Fun game.
So, anyone have any ideas about what can be done? My internet connection is beefcake enough for the demands of EVE fleet combat for sure. My PC is adequate, and im running standard graphics with effects off. Its not like this game is very graphical, its just a bunch of geometry without the effects on. Why is it such a huge resource hog? And surely something can be done about the network congestion? Does the network code use any form of compression? I dont know what it is, but SOMETHING is holding up a lot of the data my pc needs. Yea, it may be my location has something to do with it, but 60 full seconds for commands to happen? Whats wrong here?

ryo i can see what your saying but i doubt anything can be done tbh. if anything is changed to reduce lag that will only cause both parties to bring more members to fight if possible. I have been thinking bout possible solutions to this issue to make it more enjoyable for all but it would be to costly for CCP so i doubt they would even think about it.
that was setting up each grid within a system to have its own unique node. great support but damn expensive lol
another thing would be fighter code. imo when fighters are launched it reminds me of the past before the drone system got changed domi's, ishtar's and vexor's being able to deloy 10 drones each caused a lot of lag till they made changes that reduced them but increased overall damage output. Thats not my crying for numbers to be nerfed either but rather have the code they rely on be looked at more closely to see if anything can be changed or improved upon to reduce lag more ---------------------------- BOB 4 LIFE NOT JUST 4 A DAY ----------------------------

I don't really see the whole "People will only bring more people to fight" thing. Everyone already brings more than the servers can handle. As it stands I don't really think there would be that much of an increase, everyone that's gonna show up pretty much already shows up regardless of lag.

of all the complaining, if people just realized what was important and thru their backs into this, we would have a better way for fleet fights

the cost of not fixing the lag is even worse.

Edited by: Hoggs on 27/04/2008 13:43:54 That's odd, I also live in New Zealand, but get the opposite effect.
When everyone else is complaining about lag, I'm lagless. This led me to believe that the problem was in the proxies leading to the cluster, not the cluster itself.
Edit: On a side note, CCP is testing new networking technology on the test server called infiniband. This is meant to reduce lag a considerable amount. Hopefully it will be used on TQ soon. --- Hoggs Co-Exec Heretic Nation |

Actually, the whole lag in the conflict the op is referring to, comes absolutely only from fighters. When the Fleets move and assemble or start shooting something, there is absolutely no lag (1-2 secs moduledelay does NOT count imo). But whenever one side has carriers, the whole battle comes to a halt. When all fighters get scooped, suddenly the lag goes away instantly. When they are released again, the lag comes back within seconds.
It is, from my point of view, only the fighters that induce horrible lag. Nothing else, the cluster can handle full 200vs200 atm., but only as long as there are no drones out.
Something HAS to be done about these things (o/ Zulupark btw.), but sadly the playerbase does not want the amount of drones reduced.
The whole concept of drones, by the way, while cool on paper, is horrible for the server. 20 Carriers = 200 Drones = Lagtastic. And capfleets of 20 carriers are fare from rare in 0.0 today. Normally, they are much larger.
//edith: Btw. op: Try out those bracketsettings. It will help filtering out all Drones. At least on my machine it boosts my fps from about 2-3 to ~80.. |

they should change carriers so they only use 1 drone at a time. with a corrisponding increase in hp and rof from a ship bonues so it effects fighters and drones.
maybe increase the build cost of fighters too. but that has its own problems.
this has been a massive problem for a while i first experienced it fully in f-t when i was in d2 bob had so many dam fighters at the pos when we jumped in are 180 cap ships..... well now that was lag.
and its been a common tactic since if u have a pos about to be seiged u put as many carriers there as pos and lag the grid out anything that comes there will be lagged for at least 20 minutes and it will likly die.
