I like to play a supporting role in combat and have considerd a few options for a battlefiled support role. Could someone give me a run down of the various types of combat support? I have considered logistics (drone or straight up repping), scouting/probing, and using leadership skills and gang assist modules. If someone could give let me know the pros and cons of each approach and if I missed anything that would greatly help me chart my career in Eve. Thanks in advance.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 07/03/2008 06:10:14 Tackler - This is the best combat support role for a new player. All you have to do is keep a scrambler point on your target without getting killed. As you get better skills and move up to Ceptors you'll be able to speed tank everything while keeping people scrammed, webbed, and (if using the Stiletto with its four mid slots) disrupted (may require capacitor rigs.) There's also the heavy tackler role that fast cruisers, recons, Hictors, and HACs can perform.
Gang mod - Requires numerous skills at level five and the ability to use command ships. You'll be high on the list of priority targets in this role. You can opt to put a command link on a BC as well but the command links still take some time to train for.
Scout and prober - Usually both handled by the same guy in a Covert Ops frig in nullsec, although any fast ship can serve as a scout in Empire or Low Sec. Probers are valuable since they're the ones who catch the logoffskis. Requires some fairly decent skills, but not as intensive as a dedicated Command Ship pilot.
Logistics - Kind of a so-so role in today's Eve if logistics cruisers are what you want to use. Carriers are superior reppers compared to tactical ships, and battleships set up for repair duty rep better than logistics cruisers. If you're in a gang that needs to move quick you can use an LC for the repper role and hope you don't get primaried.

What kind of skills or equipment do I need for a tackler? |

Navigation, evasive maneuvering, propulsion jamming, energy management. Other skills under the navigation tree like high speed maneuvering are good (and required for MWDs.)

Dont forget ECM specialist!
A good ECM pilot can make a significant difference to the battle, dampners seem to be more useful than jammers these days though.

Logistics generally not worth it.
EW is great. A blackbird is great, so are dampening and Tracking disrupt ships. One of the easier skill-wise to get into.
Interceptors and interdictors are always needed in a group. A T1 fast frigate can work as a tackler.
A covert ops with scanning probes is useful.
Leadership skills are always usable. A BC or Command ship with the link modules is a great support role (plus those ships are tough) ---- EVE-Central.com - Your EVE economic and corporate site, featuring the inter-region market browser |

Is there a difference between EW and ECM?

EW is electronic warfare, ECM is a specific type of EW.
All EW is useful in a gang support. If you're interested in doing this, Electronics Upgrades V lets you fly EW frigates. EW frigates are specialized in, well, using EW.
Each races' frigs specialize on different EW. You're Gallente. The Gallente EW frigate gets a boost to warp disruptors (long range warp disruption for the win) and remote sensor dampeners.

I'm not sure tackling is so good for a new player. Everybody says so, but I never felt I had an impact in my T1 frigate. Either the fleet had T2 tacklers (interceptor/interdictor) or the fights were on gates and the BS could tackle for themselves. I would recommend for a newbie to get into electronic warfare instead. A T1 ewar frigate can have a noticeable impact even in a multibillion-ISK fleet. That said, my first killmail was a carrier that I helped tackle with a destroyer...

In EW, which it seems everyone agrees is good, would EW drones be a good choice to focus on? I do so love my miniature fleets.

It depends on what ship you're using. Any single EW drone is underpowered compared to an EW module. However, having five EW drones out means you can potentially put a small amount of EW on five different targets (or any variation in between.) Personally I think that all the first tier cruisers should get an additional bonus to EW drones, since there are no ships with such a bonus, and first tier cruisers need a unique boost.

If you can put enough of them out (5), its a great support role, plus it doesn't make your ship a primary target ---- EVE-Central.com - Your EVE economic and corporate site, featuring the inter-region market browser |

Out of curiosity, whats wrong with the logistics/"healer" role? I assume you would simply get killed first, but would that happen if you weren't in a logistics ship?
