Ikasu activated the video feed, sitting on the captain's chair, er, the one that's not a big goo filled pod, facing the camera. Leaning against the chair was a sword commonly associated with professional fencing, an epee. After a moment, he spoke up.
"I wanted to bring some more positive attitudes to the IGS with a post that's not related to slavery, violence, piracy, or the mass distribution of drugs. I'm talking about that which all pod pilots un-doubtidly have.....hobbies.
I was reading a thread posted by a pilot who comes to the IGS often named Aria Jenneth and she made mention of a sword she had kept on board that she had practiced with. This lead me to think of my own traditions and, eventually, the hobbies of all pod pilots when they take those long auto pilot journeys or have off time from studies. Read a novel, clean your weapons, preach your faith, look at pictures of women with questionable morals?
Personally I practice the beautiful arts of Epee and Rapier fencing, and I do mean the actual art. Sword fighting has been lost to movies with katanas that can cut through tanks and broadswords bigger then the wielder. It baffles me how people swing around swords and pretend they know how to use them. The art of swordsmanship dates back since before the Eve Gate, and it baffles me why people delude it into fancy swinging."
He explained, the screen switching to images of his dressed in his white fencing outfit, holding a spanish rapier in a customly fitted area of his ship which looked to be made out of wood instead of metal.
"So, please, tell me, what do you all do to keep yourselves occupied? I'm sure this thread will fail in comparison to the arguments of violence, terorism, and religious obsession, but I am simply...curious."
The image feed then cuts.

Hobbies? Ai! This is something refreshing and welcome.
You might think meditation, practicing forms, tea arrangements, and my bonsai garden are hobbies. I do not, but you might.
Electronic, engineering, scientific, and cultural text files are fun. Stories, yes, the stories told by various peoples are very interesting and revealing. There is betting - I prefer racing for this. But, my favorite thing is hologaming; my scoring for "Velocity Ranger" is over ten million.
I would offer a trade of one-for-one with any other who plays these VR games, my unwanted game for yours.

This.
Except in my value system those are the women with the highest morals.
Lifting other people's spirits is an extremely moral thing to do, whether it be telling a joke to cheer someone up, a smile or a hug is a form of charity, a shoulder to cry on if necessary, prayers for the ill, sexual favors, or gracing the universe with pics of your beautiful body to make the other gender happy, these are all highly moral things to do.
All of the above are acts of kindness, charity and goodwill.

Indeed, this is quite the refreshing choice of topic.
For myself, I freely admit my love of Mindclash. A longtime fan of watching the spectacle, i've only recently started playing properly. I even tried a few smallish competitions, to...well, varying degrees of success. I have a long way to improve I am sure, and I have no doubt some...interesting conclusions about myself can be drawn from the forms I employ.
It is not my only hobby... I used to greatly enjoy playing a somewhat old, archaic musical instrument known as a Violin, but have found myself increasingly reticent to do so. Something to think on there, certainly.

LetÆs see I have loads of hobbies though my most favourite has to be Poetry though not the rhyming type. I love going to art galleries, youÆd be surprised at just how many incredible talented artists native to the republic there are.
Who ever says the Matari are brutish thugs who have no artistic soul could never been to the republic, their works of art are incredible and so full of character and life so rich in their own culture are these paintings and sculptures that you can loose your self for hours on end.
I have seen Gallente, Amarrian and Caldari art and all have their own unique feel about them that makes them unique same goes for poetry of all kinds, youÆd be surprised at the vast and numerous styles there are in poetry with just one of the races alone but with all five!
Sadly the only Jovian art I have had access to is in museums at a distance behind a great array of security devices so the beauty of such works are diminished by not being able to get the full effect of them up close and personal.
I also have a great collection of music Classical composers that have given birth to moving symphonies of such power that you find your self transported mentally deep into your mind as to allow the flowing waves of music caress your senses in ways boosters can never come close to matching. Then there is the more emotion candy that is Rock that just lets your primal self take control allowing you to just lose all inhibitions.
Lastly of my note worthy hobbies are my massive collections of films that are a god send to view while mining or hauling as both have to be the most mind numbing chores around.

As for me, I admit that reading takes most of my free time. Mostly scientific articles, social sciences, but also some novels ans some theater. I'm not too much of a fan of poetry though.
I also like to prepare tea. I know probably all the variants of tea that grow in this vast cluster, and sometimes I've found it rather refreshing to investigate and try the flavours of two or more combined (usually two is enough, more becomes hard to control, and thus chaotic).
I love music too, both religious and classical one. Other genres are too noisy, though sometimes jazz can be interesting.
Finally, I am quite a fan of table strategy games, mostly chess, though mindclash works well too. I must admit I am not too good with them, though. But they are entertaining just the same.
And I guess I should start practice fencing with my traditional Ni-Kunni blade, but to be honest I find it most dull and boring, so I always skip it.

Most of my hobbies are the same as they were before I became a pod pilot: I have a keen interest in the arts, and listen to music, go to theater performances stationside when possible, and read the classics. I read the scriptures and poetry, of course, and write some of my own poetry from time to time. And I study and engage in intellectual discourse.
Recently, however . . . I have begun to study science as a hobby, particularly rogue drones. It was one of my early loves, but I never had the chance to pursue it until now. ________________________________ This is not a signature. |

Aside from the occasional holoflick, which doesn't really count as a hobby, I occupy my time stationside with socializing and Splinterz. Mostly gambling, because I don't -- and can't -- compete anymore. When I need time alone I practice rakkuio, this conical-bored woodwind that's sitting in front of me. I like to think I've gotten quite good at it, and there's something positively bittersweet about the sound it makes. I've found it to be a voice to supplement my own.
When I can get down to a planet, I typically try to visit those with vast oceans. I love the ocean, and to a lesser extent the creatures below it. Having grown up along a coastal district of New Caldari before I became a capsuleer, much of my planetside recreation springs from those roots -- waveboarding, diving, and the like.

As far as actual hobbies go ... hm. Like Ms. Sun, my spiritual practices and exercises can't really be termed a hobby; though my crescent blade seems to have inspired you to discuss hobbies, Mr. Ikasu, for me it's more a tool (and one no longer very useful) than a pastime.
My actual hobbies are hiking and exploration on foot, usually planetside urban; Splinterz, though it's been a long time since I bet on a match; politics, here on the IGS, considering that many of the topics I comment on are bluntly none of my business. I do read, and I do tend to appreciate art where I find it (which is sometimes in the furthest place from an art gallery), but I don't know that I dedicate enough interest in these specific directions to think of them as hobbies, as such.
Oh, yes-- botany, recently, though hydroponics is an area of more-than-personal interest, so I'm not even sure this counts.

Nothing relieves the stress of combat patrols, managing my business affairs and corp duties like participating in an ISGC race. The speed, the great people and of course the party afterwards.

Wow, i'm so happy to have seen this thread pick up off the ground. I have many other hobbies too of course. I enjoy holoreels, gaming, and some good old fashion role playing. I don't like reading much, I get enough of that studying, and I don't look at smut or fly around with Exotic Dancers like many pod pilots. I have a lover for that, even if she spends all her time planetside. -------------------------------------------------- My post does not represent views of my Alliance.

Hobbies?...HAHAHAAA!...Sorry about that...Too much caffine and lack of sleep can make a trader's mind unstable after awhile...I wish I could say I had interesting hobbies but mostly in my rare spare time I just pick up random crosswords and try to solve them...Sometimes I watch my Crop Mates flying their ships in and out of the home station, half grimacing at the new work they are bringing me, half day dreaming about what it would be like to command a powerful battleship or wiz around the stars in a sleek combat frigat...Then I remember how nausiating the shuttle flight to our home base was and go back to my crosswords...

My only Hobbie, if you can call it that, is looking at computer readouts and simulations on the effectiveness of various ship classes and module loadouts to determine the most effective setups for various circumstances. Some might consider such work or unenjoyable but it happens to be what I like to do and I really do not have time to waste on more trivial persuits. +++++++++++++++ For the LAST time...

I just know this is going to tie into all the stereotypes about Brutor and about ex-Marines, but one of the things I do is collect interesting small arms and armor; it's the kind of thing I wanted to do, but the disposable income and long-term survival odds of pod pilots are far far higher than my last career. Maintaining proficiency with them and doing martial arts might count as a hobby as well, now that I have less call to use those skills for serious uses. Darts (or knife throwing) is somewhat borderline between where it falls; I've passed a lot of time in bars with friends putting pointy metal things of some sort into dart boards and while I know in theory it's a combat skill or something, I've never had to throw a knife at someone.
Aside from the more physical hobbies, I've actually come to realize that my education is lacking in a lot of ways over the years, or at least lacking in areas not devoted to survival or combat effectiveness. So I'm working on becoming a lot better read in terms of history, politics, and literature in addition to more technical fields. I have to agree with 3ll3 on the topic of art, though I'm a comparable neophyte to the subject, and when not in part of a gang I almost always have rock music of some variety piped into my pod. And, I guess even more than that, I'm always open to the idea that more things will catch my interest as I experience new things that don't necessarily involve being shot at.

Consider it done. I just had two litters, actually, so get back to me with the temperament you'd like your animal to have. I have two very good bloodlines going right now, one of them has been crowd-trained and would make a lovely, docile pet. My Gallente clients seem to go crazy for these.
I think you'll be more interested in the second line, however. I bought a bitch from the penal colony on Agil VI, and mated her with Dominus, rest his soul. I now have eight pups, about a year old. They're trained in the Amarr method and can pick out a Minmatar by scent alone in a crowd of thousands. Utterly vicious, too, and a bit disobedient admittedly, but manageable. They even come pre-trained with a number of kill words. Lovely animals, really.

I'm not really a breeder, per se. I acquired 10 of them in an auction after Sae Sato's interview with Ms. Yubari. I didn't have the heart to rob the other bidders of the ones they really wanted, so I gave 5 to other pilots.
I do, however, hope to breed Rodj and Revan. I can only imagine how the pups will turn out. In fact, if you're a skilled breeder, perhaps I should send you the rest of these animals, as you might be able to care for them far better than I.
