Unless it's changed since I last tried, a couple of years ago I think, then you'll lose all your old music if you add anything new.
This is the reason I sold my iPod, my PC needed an emergency reinstall and I lost hundreds of CD's I'd ripped. Couldn't be bothered to do all that again.

Edited by: Roxanna Kell on 27/02/2008 19:53:17 Before you plug your ipod, Go to end Tast, and turn off Ipodhelper.exe and Itunehelper.exe
When you connect your ipod, it shouldn't synch, or start itune automaticlly, I usually do this just to copy thing to the Ipod Drive such as homework and all.
So open My computer/Ipod, and look into it for your music, copy all the mp3s back to your hard disk for back up. or you can just simply back up the whole drive.
I am about to put my \Ipod nano black on ebay now tbh, got sick of it.

Funny fact - you can write Ipod data to DvD's to keep on a case if you have to reinstall OS.

It was the major record labels who forced DRM on Apple before they would allow their music to be sold on iTunes.
But you're in luck. The last of the big four record labels recently announced they were abandoning DRM completely. I believe iTunes already sells some DRM free music and that will only grow from here on out.
Yeah I know, I am shocked the record labels did this too but it is just them finally facing what has been obvious to everyone else. DRM never stopped those who wanted to steal music and only hampered legitimate users. The labels also realized they made a juggernaut in the form of iTunes since Apple refused to license their DRM technology. So those who actually paid for the music had to get it via iTunes and could only play it on Apple hardware/software.
The labels finally realized opening the market up is better by allowing music you buy from whatever source to be played on any player. By making it more accessible and competition offering better deals more people will buy music instead of stealing it.
Not sure how long it will take to trickle into the market but as I said some is already here. Whether your DRMed iTunes music will be un-DRMed I have no idea.
But anyway you should be able to get an iPod or whatever you like and play what you like from wherever you like.
However, near as I can tell the RIAA will continue to sue anyone who so much as hums a tune without paying them first.

Sure thing...I hardly believed it myself. Of course this is all new so we'll have to wait a bit and see how it plays out but seems encouraging.
Proof: Death of DRM Could Weaken iTunes, Boost iPod -- Wired Magazine, January 4, 2008.
EDIT: As far as I know only the big four record labels have backed off DRM. Movie companies still seem to be doing business as usual (indeed last year they wanted Apple to make the DRM more restrictive but Apple opposed them). Read the article and see what you think. Hopefully it is the start of something better though.

Or you could, you know, manually synch it without itunes at all and with unencrypted data files and avoid all the DRM shenanigans to begin with...

This. I've never bothered with any of the iTunes and the DRM crap (or the auto sync piece of **** that decides to erase your iPod and/or music library at random times), torrents+anapod ftw. Everything is possible for him who believes. Insprinc haptbandun - Inuar vigandun |
