Just a question about the on board scanners. with my current skills i can only do system wide cosmic anomalys scans. although there are several other choices. i assume i need a skill to access the other scan types. such as ships. but what specific skill (s) do i need?
any help is greatly apprecated

TO scan for ships and such you need to use scan probe launchers.
Oh, and the anomaly scans aren't system wide. They are 5 AU, which is good for scanning near planets.

Edited by: notaway on 26/02/2008 07:29:34 I believe u can use the directional scanner and change ur settings to 360 degrees and place on max (don't use overview settings) for defensive purposes to see if ne ship is getting close to ur position..

That's the directional scanner. The shipboard scanner was added with Revelations 2 to allow for free probing of low end exploration pockets.

Besides, if you wanted to check for incoming ships, you would almost certainly want to use overview settings, otherwise you'd get a lot of junk on the scan. The more clutter there is, the more work you have to do to go through it all and the less chance there is of you noticing an incoming ship. If you scan with an overview setting that just shows ships (in fact you can probably take shuttles & rookie ships off to reduce clutter even more) you can hit the scan button every few seconds and any chance will be instantly noticable. You wouldn't even actually need to read the results normally, just notice when extra lines appear and read them then.

You overlook one thing here: You aren't necessarily looking for ships, but for the probes allowing those ships to warp to you. And probes only show on the scanner when you have overview settings unchecked because scanner probes for whatever reason don't have an overview toggle. So if you look for probes, you got to keep use overview settings off.

That's definitely true, and I agree with it 100%. If you want the advance warning of being probed out, it's the way to do it. If, however, you're aligned and through a gate or two of a deadspace mission then you can likely rely on waiting for the ships to appear on your scanner. It will take a non-cloaked ship a fair amount of time to warp the >14AU, decelerate out of warp, then activate as many gates as is required to get to your pocket. Especially compared to the 0.5 seconds it will take you to get into warp once you see them coming.
This does, however, leave you open to covops ships with warp inhibitors and force recons. The former aren't really a problem (if there is no backup within 14AU you will easily be able to pop them before their buddies arrive, and if they do have non-cloaked backup you'll have seen this anyway) but the force recons can feasibly keep you pinned down long enough for more conventional forces to arrive.
Also, a lot of this depends where you are. If you're in a mission then you will need to be probed out to be attacked, so it makes sense to look for the probes. If you're at a celestial body (e.g. ratting) then looking for ships is likely to be the best chance of catching someone up to no good.
