Quote: Science fiction trading game Eve Online
It was a very strange read to me, the author is taking one part of the game (the market) and tries to make it so that the whole point of the game is based around that single thing.
I can neither relate nor accept his interpretation of EVE online. IMHO he's misrepresenting the EVE Universe as nothing more than a (tacky) scifi market simulation when in truth it is so much more.

If they called it Internet Spaceships then people would think "pfft, Star Trek Geeks". If they called it a empire simulator with serious pvp, the pvp word might scare people.
As a "Science fiction trading game" it touches the mind of the average bbc reader clearly. Elite was a science fiction trading game and there are plenty of those out there.

Eve's market is entirely unrealistic. Though the BBC isn't exactly a beacon of light and truth any more.
Probably the most realistic thing about Eve's economy is that you can only use ISK as money, you will not pray to any other god, you will never be allowed to create a replacement for ISK. Other than that, Eve's economy is well rehearsed set of paths from faucet to sink and little in between, but sure does look pretty.
Maybe it should be called Niagra:Online.

2) Idiot.

I find any discussion of 'efficiency' in Eve markets in an attempt to relate it to RL economics completely lame.
Eve has no fuel costs. At least quarter of the economy is magicked up daily, maybe more. Consumption is 99.9% military - arms and munitions manufacture, and extraction and processing of stuff to do that with.
Unless he will discuss the game in honest terms, he's just another half-arsed advertisement for the neocon program of 'free' markets and military-industrial churn.

I didn't get that impression at all. I think the article does a good job in the space provided of explaining a core aspect of Eve. The economy of Eve is central to the game no matter what a handful of gung-ho adrenalin junkies think.
Everything anyone does relates back to the market. Combat tends to focus people's attention and if you're in a well run alliance you might have everything provided for you for free. But someone, somewhere is always paying the bills. If it isn't you, it'll be your CEO or Alliance leaders.
I'm not sure how well Eve's economy relates to a real-world economy but it's complex and flexible enough to be worth studying. CEOs and Alliance leaders do indeed learn important skills that can be used in the real-world.
Eve doesn't have an exactly relationship with real-life (or even a close one) but it does allow familiar scenarios to be examined and influenced. It is therefore educational. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran)

Well to be fair, POS and capitals do use massive amounts of fuel.
But ya, basically the entire eve economy is geared towards supplying military consumption.

I'm not saying it's a bad explanation about the market, but it's focusing solely on the market leaving everything besides the market out.
I would argue that the market is not even of tertiary importance to the game, the sole primary drive of EVE is in truth it's subscribers, the people behind the computer screens. Making EVE out to be nothing more than an online market simulator is pure ignorance at it's best.

I agree with Scilent, but really, the article isn't about EVE, it's just an example for a virtual economy and the economic analyzers of EVE handling public relations for this article of course yields a discussed based around the EVE market. Noone said they were discussing EVE as a whole.
Of course it was glorified, but what isn't these days.

The BBC (aka auntie) is probally the most unbiased new site you can get in the english language. It has no agenda, its a Common Good organisation, it has no corporate masters that hide or promote or aid its corporations agenda, look at Fox News (aka Faux Noise) or any main stream US new organ.
Those above who said the article doesn't mention pew-pew are quite frankly unable to understand well written english, "Players battle to win territories" is the opening of the 3rd paragraph, and just 2 para's later again talks about war. Well if war isn't pew-pew to the above gainslayers of the article they really need to either get an education or go see some real war so they may be enlightened.
People do not understand "Common Good" any more its all me, me, me, its a shame that thacher gutted the beeb and made it market driven, and yes all intelligent people tend to be more left wing than idiots as they can actually think, reason and draw conculsions as they understand what is the common good, what role it plays in everyones life and how the gready overlook and neglect it whilst exploting it at the same time.
Oh, and the BeeB always link to the subjects site so any thinking person can research the topic further from the horses mouth.
Nice to see they are also hosting the Trinity trailer.

The economy and trading are important, for sure, but he calls it a "trading game" and only mentions trading and the economy. He doesn't mention combat, exploration or anything else. That is leaving out a huge part of the game.
Read through it again. He doesn't just mainly talk about the economy, he writes like trading among corporations is all that the game is about.

Yeah, it's run by the government, which I trust less than big corporations. I honestly can't believe that the people of the UK are perfectly ok with the government owning and operating their major news network.

Edited by: Sephra Star on 21/02/2008 18:14:03 The game does mimic the real world in many ways.
After all Globalism has subjugated us into pretty much a Fascist (Corporatist) Slavery state where an individuals rights are secondary to the economic well being of Corporations.
Mission Runners and Miners are the Blue Collar laborors, while Traders and Industrialists are the white collar.
The filthy rich puppet masters of course get to laugh at most of us while we struggle to make ends meet and enjoy manipulating their minions to engage in warfare.
Then of course their are the GRIEFERS and the true reality is the real world is certainly full of them.

Eve regularly gets mentioned in the monthly gaming press in the UK (and therefore globally since most UK computer magazines are also distributed overseas), through features and straight reviews. Although calling Eve JUST a science fiction trading game is missing the point, the economy is one of the most unique and interesting aspects of the game and makes interesting discussion even for people who don't play Eve, or play games at all. Of course there are plenty of other unique features in Eve, thats why we play!
And now for a completely shameless plug (ahem): you can check my review of Eve's Linux client in Linux Format, issue 103, which is on the shelves now. Eve also has also been mentioned recently in PC Plus and PC Format.

Apparently you didn't read the charter too well either. It is a corporation controlled by a Trust and Board of Executives.
"Trust" as defined by said charter: THE BBC TRUST 12. Legal nature of the Trust The word ôtrustö is used in the name of the BBC Trust in a colloquial sense, to suggest a body which discharges a public trust as guardian of the public interest. The word is not used in its technical legal sense, and it is not intended to imply that the members of the Trust are to be treated as trustees of property or to be subject to the law relating to trusts or trustees. Constitution of the Trust 13. Composition of the Trust (1) The Trust shall consist of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman, and a number of ordinary members...
CNN does not directly post their charter, because they are owned by A Time Warner Company and as such fall under their chater and guidelines http://www.timewarner.com/corp/corp_governance/index.html. The same can be said about FOX News http://www.fox.com/corporate/terms.htm. So, in answer to your question, at least the two I looked looking up did publish their charters.

If I were Helmar I would put my lead economist threw a course in marketing before the next interview was allowed to be given. Also I would offer the BBC an addition to current article. ___________________

A corporation controlled by a trust, directly financed by every person in its home nation, and which is trusted more than that country's government itself,
vs.
A little watched news channel, part of a global right wing media conglomorate controlled by one old man who pays no tax in any country.
As Harry Hill might say - "There's only one way to sort out who's telling the truth - Fiiiiiiight!"

Sorry, you must be still asleep so i'll go thru this one more time in easy to understand statements.
Its the BBC, British Broadcasting CORPORATION, so its self evident its a corporation, in the first few clauses its says that the Corporation is just the Trust and the Exec board, no shareholders etc, they hold the TRUST of the Nation, rich and poor, worker and employer, good and bad, stupid and intelligent, everyone regardless of any critea. The BBCÆs public nature and its objects state that the BBC exists to serve the public interest and its main object is the promotion of its Public Purposes it says so in the first hundered lines. You have failed to note that as it explains the bit you quote; "The word ôtrustö is used in the name of the BBC Trust in a colloquial sense, to suggest a body which discharges a public trust as guardian of the public interest. The word is not used in its technical legal sense", Now you bit re Faux and Dime Wornout, both of these are AMERICIAN CORPORATIONS, they are set up SOLELY FOR PROFIT, they are only beholden to thier shareholders, they are not "Common Good" they are by law required to put their shareholders profits first, they have no accountability or responsibility to the population in the same way the bbc has, they are not for public good, they are to make the shareholders, the corporation management and its cronies rich. You have failed to understand, and your if your Americian its understandable.
On a side note: Your Time Warner (you should have posted the citizenship page) and Fox (vauge company overview and terms of use basically) links did make me laugh, what you should have done was pull up the PBS stuff as that would have been in the same ballpark as the BBC as a NOT for Profit, Publically Owned/Supported, Public Service, set up to imform and educate.
Also both your examples are not incorporated by a royal charter, thats why you can't find one.

Here's a nice argument I'm sure you'll agree with - if someone can't afford food, they should sell their TV and they won't have to pay the license fee. Don't expect the taxpayer to come to your aid, just because you want to watch TV instead of feeding your children.

Yes you are a generation younger than I, and i can say you also know nothing regards me too, but i do know you don't know Radio Four is not a Music station and i know many people from your neighbours in Moss side, real nutters.
And i don't need to go look at magistrates court, i've been there done that, but its the thacterite legacy that prevails, in a decent socialist market ecomony the socially disadvantaged would get the licence fee free as no-one can have a life let alone survive on UK benifits, greedy ppl can't see that having poor people is not in thier intrests in the long term.

You missed my point entirely, I'm not trying to see a general reveiw EVE, I'm not trying to make the article into one either.
What I am saying:
This article misrepresents EVE online as a trading game to people who don't play it. We all know what EVE is, this article is dealing with a fraction of it (quiet well I admit willingly) but the wording in it says directly : "Science fiction trading game Eve Online" as if it was the only and sole focus of the game. Thus misrepresenting it.
