After the stellar selling of SSE, he can easily afford to buy an helicopter. Anyway, let's talk about a cool feature of SSE: if you have a group of friends you are able to start a game on a huge map and whenever you want you can save your game and resume it later. This way very long games can be divided and played on different game sessions with the same players.....neat feature, isn't it?

Presenting Sulora's newb guide to SoaSE (Sins of a Solar Empire) for the Advent race (amarr laser type race)
Tips:
One of the first things I build, before even civilian or military research facilities, is the capital shipyard. Because your first cap ship is 99% free, all it costs is one capital ship crew, which comes when you begin the match, no research required. I've found that the cap ship (I always choose the Advents Battleship for my first cap ship) greatly greatly increases your chances of surviving early on. I can usually take over a few planets if playing a match with just one star system, but if there are multiple star systems present, I can take over my system and plus 1 other with just a cap ship plus a few frigates for support.
One of the first things I research when I take over a planet is the civilian infrastructure upgrade, because if you don't have that upgrade, or wait and upgrade something else first, then your planet is a hindrance on your coin. It's costing you coin to not have it upgraded. Second thing I usually research is Logistics for the planet, then Explore the planet, Emergency facilities, lastly tactical slots if needed.
When conducting research, one of the firs things I go for is a strong economy, the quicker I can have a strong economy, the quicker I can whip out fleets or whip out one giant mega steamrolling bbq fleet. (Largest I've had so far was 9 assorted cap ships, 20 or so heavy cruisers, 18 or so cruiser support ships, and about 20 assorted frigates. Plus about 14 drone squadrons courtesy of the cap ships.) While slow to start, a strong economy lets you spread more culture to your planets, spread more culture to your enemies planets, and field bigger and stronger fleets. I usually go 2 or 3 teer into the economic growth part of research, before starting to get the military research accomplished.
When defending planets as Advent. I've found that 4 drone hanger bays, 10 strategically placed guardian sentry guns, can put a whole lot of pain on enemy fleets. ( Please note that in order to get these much tactical slots, you need to research the Advents upgrade for how many tactical slots a planet can have) The only time I've had an enemy fleet defeat a planet defended such as this, was when they threw two of their strongest fleets at it, at the same time. I still managed to destroy about 8 or the 10 caps they had, it was more of an overwhelming force of planet killing frigates than anything. But if they try and take a planet with this defense with anything less than an extremely large force, your planet will be safe. ---------------------------------------------

Anyone got any tips for getting Metals? I play as the Advent, and even if i fully upgrade the metal extractor research thingies,i still run short....and i don't even build very many ships early on.
Crystals are fairly easy to get once you pick up one of the 4x crystal roid ice planets,i suppose you'd have to get lucky and get a 4x metal roid volcanic planet....but i never seem to get those, any tips?

Also.....is there any way to bring down those ridiculous npc frigate blobs, atm i'm staring down a fleet with 15 caps,130 frigs and 20 assorted cruisers, and as soon as i knock out about 5-8 of their capitals, they just pack up and leave, and since the majority of the time i'm on the offensive,i can't build those phase jump inhibitor things.
heh ive had this prob also. what i do is make 2 missile fig fleets around 60-80 frigs when one is engaging them send the other around to the system they are falling back too. the frigs should beat them to the punch. so, when they do escape the first fleet of frigs the second will be there waiting to welcome them to their icy 0 g graves!

Currently, My fleet consisting of 3 Cap ships, around 50 LRM Frigates, 10 cruisers, 5 carriers, 2 command ships, 2 flak frigates, and 3 of those repair boats are stuck in an asteroid belt with my whole empire at it's back, and the enemy at it's front.
My enemy has about 5 cap ships, at least 15 carriers, a couple siege frigates, and a ton of colonization frigates. They are advent so all those fighters and bombers the carriers and cap ships are putting out really hurt!
They are not going to attack my Asteroid belt, it is too well defended and it would be a sure victory for me if all my gaus guns were focus firing, so I have to be on the offensive. But when I do go on the offensive, the most I can do is pop one of their cap ships, while barely losing one of mine, at the expense of most of my support ships.
I guess I just have to wait for my fleet logistics research to grow...
This game is so amazing __ _ __ _ __ _ __ _ __ _ __ _ __ _ __ _ __ _ __
A ship while docked is safe... But that isn't what ships were made for.

Beside using the Black Market, Refineries and Trading? Pay attention to your allegiance on your planets, the lower it's allegiance the less income (credits/resources) it has. Once your empire spread, consider changing your capital, placing it so it spread more evenly across your planets, and use broadcast centers. Broadcasting is also a great way to hinter enemies!

Yeah, the AI chickens out quite often, but so would I - Survival is the key! - but try having more fleets parked around in nearby systems to intercept fleeing enemies, and make sure to primary any colony ship to make sure they'll have trouble capturing new planets. The Advents have a nice PSI utility that throws ships around, if you tactically place ships with this ability near warp-in points in systems, you can make sure they are thrown further into the system and can't just warp back again from the position they warp in.
Enjoy, and fly safe..

I played 3 games so far against the ia in easy mod. I'm often short on crystals, but I manage. One mistake I tend to repeat is queueing 4 or 5 researchs, draining alaivable ressources away from planet devloppement and constructions.
I also found out that a pack of 20 combat cruisers is a great way to kill enemy capital ships, more efficient at that than 5 of your own cap ships.
And this game is very addictive. ------------------------------------------

Research doesnt have to be running all the time, take time to use the research.
I bought the game yesterday, I decided to play an easy game with 12 planets+pirates at the slowest mod possible, to learn it. i ended up winning around 4 am, had no idea time can go so fast with this mofo. I swear to god, until a time machine that speeds it up , this is your best bet.
Awesome game, fatastic graphics and cheer size that does not need a high end system, and damn well addictive, so don't buy it if you have too much to loose.

Gah, here goes my EVE time I got it Friday evening (was out of town for a couple of days), managed to miss 6 or 7 hours worth of skill training on TQ, played almost non-stop (short of that login to change skill in EVE and a few phone calls and IMs) for about 26 hours, then went to sleep telling myself I would let the game alone for a while, then I come here and see you discuss it
Long story short, yes it does look a bit like Homeworld meets MoOrion, but a far more fitting description would be "Pax Imperia : Eminent Domain without any time flow rate changes". The one thing I didn't like (but wasn't very put off by) was the fact you can't adjust any of the "game speeds". On fast, especially on larger maps, it can get nasty if you spread out too much... on slow, you wait for what feels like forever... and normal, instead of being the better of the extremes, is still too fast for fine-control, but still feels way too long when building up. On the flipside, this definetely should work out fantastic in multiplayer games against humans, since it's basically a handicap system (the bigger you get, the more exposed to skirmish/roving gang engagements you get).
That being said, there's a few things about the game coding too... and I mean bugs, not visually nor functionally on the concept side (which, to be honest, is as close to awesome as one could hope for, once you fiddle with the options a bit and get acquainted with the controls)... my one and only problem is that the mouse wheel, for me, suddendly and randomly reverses direction whenever it sees fit to do so (especially if I want to zoom in or out really fast). For instance, the game lets you select just about any display resolution and texture options your vidcard should be able to handle individually, but it positively overloads and spills the beans if you push it to the max and you don't have the latest, greatest vidcard in the world (for instance, occasional flickering of parts of the screen at certain zoom levels, or the sound cuts off, or some weapon effects cease to be rendered at all except at very specific zoom levels... and so on and so forth). So, if you think the weapon effects are not that impressive, try bumping your graphics detail DOWN a notch, and look at them again, heh.
Also, the load times can be pretty ugly, but then again what 3D game loads instantly these days ? Personally, I only loaded a game from saves I made when I quit the game for some reason, and ONCE from an auto-save after a PC lock-up (I only had this one in months, and it was in this game). Basically, it's surprisingly stable for a first release version, but not completely bug free. ___
With the bad out of the way, the good and the exploits. Oh, love the "acheivements" page, HILLARIOUS ! Already completed about 40%, heh, go me
To be honest, I only played 5 games total (plus the tutorials), but one of them took the better part of the 26h I've played. Tutorials and the first 3 games were inconsequential (I was learning the game and fiddling with race selection against weak AI opponents), but the last two were quite nice. The last one was a 1-vs-1 on that arrow-looking map (2 terran, 2 asteroid, 2 arctic, pirate base) against a hard random opponent, which I had no trouble beating, but a lot of trouble eliminating.
The previous game was the "hugely long" one... played on one of the largest maps (5 stars, 100+ planets) against 7 "normal ranom" AI opponents in a FFA style showdown. On that map, I was also stubborn enough to NOT build anything other than capital ships (16 caps, 7 battleships, rest assorted, all L7/L8 now), and to be honest, I haven't finished it yet (but there's no question how it will end, I already control most of the map, have huge reserves, and the cap fleet is practically invincible already... never lost one in the entire game).
So, the game ? One (left hand) pinky down, and four thumbs (including feet) up !

If you can work your way around the Galaxy Forge editor, you can have quite a bit of fun creating custom maps. After figuring out how to plug a couple of the gaps left out of the current version (Creating inter-star connections, for example) using notepad, you can create some quite interesting maps to blow stuff up on.
The Sins devs say they are working on releasing a better version of the editor that has some fixes and better functionality soonish. --------------------

Lets just say that according to Ironclad the minimum requirements are a bit pessimistic. At minimum it should infact perform pretty well.
Lowest system reported was someone who got it going on his old laptop P3 with an integrated intel vid-card. Not exactly the most sophisticated of GPUs, but on lowest it ran pretty well. He didn't expect it too, but it worked. His other comp broke down earlier and he needed his fix. Only thing is that operating systems below Windows XP are not supported, win2k refuses to cooperate for instance. Although people have got it to run under Wine for linux.

ps, I gotta remember to not try and take over systems too fast or I get stretched too thin to support them all from attacks. And the AI in this game is very clever. I was thinking "oh no, another awesome game I can't play because of my crappy old hardware". Then I had a bit of a click around the SoaSE forums, and there are reports of people playing it - smoothly, too - on machines you couldn't even play EVE Classic on. Definitely sticking it on my wish list for after pay-day. ------

I think that when they say "minimal" they actually mean "smooth gameplay on default settings on a huge map" Bumping the details down a notch, playing a smaller game, and you can get away with playing on "really old" computers (say, 4 years or so, since... well, 1 year old is "meh, somewhat old" in the computer industry, especially when it comes to games).

Well, you'd be surprised to find that some people actually play EVE on "ancient" machines too for various reasons. Myself, I used to end up with a pathetically old system as "main machine" at home for a rather long period of time (long story), a Duron @1.1GHz with a cheapskate Radeon (think barely above NVidia 5200 performance-wise)... ran even under 4 FPS in most missions, yet it didn't bother me much.
But yeah, if you bought your machine less than 3 or even 4 years ago, and it wasn't a bottom of the line model back then, this game should be no trouble at all.

Graphics in sins are basic for a good reason, when you get fights with hundreds of frigates and even more fighters, it, even on a good computer tends to slow down a lot. Factor in that, much like supreme commander you spend 99% of your time watching your triangles annihilate their squares you can understand why your standard frigate dosn't look like a masterpiece.
My problem with sins, is even though it is an amazing game, the skirmish AI is so terrible, that it isn't even a challange. Multiplayer obviously fixes this, but the game is so slow paced and lengthy that it is very difficult to play a reasonable game. ---

Catch 22 (Map) <-- Save that page as catch22.galaxy NOTE: This map has NOT been tested much and may be COMPELTELY UNBALANCED! Also be aware that this map may not work on older systems as it is quite large.
How to install: Place in the folder C:\program files\stardock\TotalGaming\Sins of a Solar Empire\Galaxy (I think you’re meant to put it in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<<windows username>>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Galaxy but the maps don’t seem to work if I do that)
Description: Basically this is a map of the Catch region and a few surrounding systems. Each player starts with 7 planets to get them going (there are 137 planets in total!) This map was made for two teams of three players.
Story so far (not totally based on real events): It is set during the most recent BoB/MC led invasion into Catch after FAT/25S and 5-N/V2 have fallen to GBC forces.
Starting positions: I think I have gotten the right teams to start in the right starting positions (hopefully) so there should be no allies starting on completely opposite sides of the map. H74-B0 (Querious) – MC – Team 1 49-U6U (Querious) – FIX – Team 1 5-N2EY (Catch) – BoB – Team 1 --- 68FT-6 (Impass) - AAA - Team 2 MB-NKE (Catch) – IAC – Team 2 9UY4-H (Providence) – CVA – Team 2
NOTE: As far as I know you cannot choose which team you are on as you are automatically assigned.
Please write any constructive critisicm on how to improve this map (or even change it yourself in galaxy forge!) If you really like it, please send “SE10” iskies...
DISCLAIMER: No flaming is intended by the above post or map. It is just meant to be abit of fun...
