Ppl don't usually do lvl 4s in a Drake not because it's not tanked enough, but because it lacks DPS to finish them quickly

I think hes saying hes good at running missions.
You could swap one of the invuln fields for a CN raven now with current prices. That'd be a much better mission runner.
Tractor beam would make a lot more sense than salvager for grabbing mission loot cans.

Unless you are a huge Drake fan that seems like massive overkill.
As remarked above the ISK value in that fitting could easily buy a cruise CNR and fit it competently, and it would be much better at the job.

Drake 7 HML2 + auto-targ 3 LSE2 + 3 hardeners (or 2 hardeners and SR-II) 2 BCS2 + 2 Beta Reactor SPR 3 purgers 5 T2 light drones
= 100 mil ISK or so, and runs missions just fine too
EDIT: Actually, I think it may be even cheaper than that, I see purger prices have dropped heavily, and T2 module prices have dropped slightly too.

Personally I prefer
7x CN Heavies, 1x Small remote armor rep(save the poor drones!)
4x Rat Specific Hardeners 2x LSE II's
3x CN BCU 1x SPR II
3x Purger rigs
Either way all the lvl4's are pretty easy with such a heavily tanked setup, although I upgrade to a CNR as I can get a good 200-300 more DPS and a better tank =\ -=^=- "Someday the world will recognize the genius in my insanity." |

Edited by: Wet Ferret on 01/02/2008 01:30:30 Been doing them in
7x HMLII + Empty (no fitting room for anything else) 1x 10MN Afterburner II, 2x Larger Regolith extender, 3x Hardeners (mix of faction and named) 3x Ballistic Control II, Beta Shield Power Relay 3x Purger Rigs
I need the faction hardeners cause my fitting skills suck and I can't use T2 but this knocks out level 4s pretty quick. Quick enough that I'm making more isk with bounties than I did in 3s, though the frequency of missions is much lower so I'm not getting as much standings.
As you can see I I don't have as much tank as most others seem to use. But I do have more damage JUST SAY NO TO OVERTANKING!
edit!

At the end of the day you're never going to achieve the same level of success in terms of ISK/hour with a Drake running lvl4s as you would with the correct ship (i.e. battleship).
It seems pointless spending that much on a Drake when it's just not built for the job, it would be like spending a fortune on a faction fit destroyer to run lvl2s when a cruiser is ground up better at the job.
Is it a case that people just become too comfortable with the Drakes ridiculous passive tanking capabilities?

except most level 2s can be run in a destroyer

I have tried a Drake for lvl 4 missions but I usually end up in a stalemate when only the BS rats are left. They cant kill me, but it takes forever to kill just one of them. So I leave and come back with a Raven to clean up.

Well anyone who is doing lvl 4 missions in Drake when he has enough isk to run them in faction fitted CNR is just crazy.
Drake has considerably less DPS compared to CNR. More over Drake has mediocre range, which means that it can't snipe and is forced to take more damage. Which requires better tank and as we all know fitting good tank is made on sacrifices to DPS Which gives you even less DPS!

I had the same problem - so I'd fly in an alt with a myrmidon (he happens to be Gallente, so myrm was available) to assist. A myrm with a minimal passive tank, tech II hammerheads and 6 medium anti-matter rails did the sort of damage I was looking for to take out the BS rats. With a myrm and a drake putting concentrated fire on a BS, they melt pretty quick. (total damage was 7 heavy missile launchers, 5 Hobgoblin II, 5 hammerhead II, and 6 medium rails with anti-matter).
Solo Level 4s in a drake is just too much effort - can be done, but puts a major dent in both ISK and standings per hour.
Cheers Falka

I think that the difference in pricetag is not insignificant, here. 75m for a rigged Drake vs 600m for a rigged CNR. You get more damage at a much higher liability...
Full tank is not needed on the Drake, check my setup... I don't even have maxed shield skills (shield management 3, shield upgrades 2, tactical shield manipulation 2, lulz) and I can do 4s with three ballistic controls. The last time I had to warp out of a mission was when I fit wrong hardeners against serpentis and was trying to tank about 15 cruisers/HACs.
As far as targeting range goes... raven (same with CNR) has a crappy targeting range so it doesn't have a large advantage here.
The main problem is that people expect to sit there and take agro on every NPC in a pocket which does require an extreme tank, but is not necessary in any mission. The Drake has better maneuverability and is really good at popping scramblers fast so it's pretty safe on even the more dangerous missions.

Well my current CNR setup is:
Highs: 7 CN Cruise Launchers 1 Drone Link Augmentor
Mids: 1 LSE II 4 T2 active hardeners (damage type specific) 1 Target Painter II
Lows: 2 CN BCS 3 SPR II
Rigs: Core Defense Field Purger I 2 Warhead Rigor Catalysts I
Faction missiles 5 med drones
As you can see I am not overtanking myself either, but I can bet that I have more DPS :) and my missile skills are mediocre at best. I have Caldari Battleship at level 2 and cruise missiles at lvl 3, not even talking about rapid lauchning and warhead upgrades.
In fact I feel comfortable enough to drop the last purger in favour of warhead rigor catalyst. Because the way I play is that I snipe them all to death before they even can place one decent hit on me. I remember playing Drake and I loved it so much that I never used acitve tanking on my Ravens, but I still vividdly remember my frustration about 42 km range. Now I have 82 km and trust me with my firepower I can feel the difference. In fact my concern now is not tank or dps, but the fact that my missiles are too slow and my launchers are too fast so I tend to waste voleys of faction ammo if my targets are more than 50 km away.

I know you have more damage I have a rigged (CCC) Raven in a hangar for when I'm in a gang and can just DPS. Caldari BS 3 and Cruise lvl 3 puts me slightly over my T2 Drake DPS, I just don't really feel safe using it because scramblers die too slow even with my drones and it doesn't seem to tank as well (I use a T2 X-Large booster w/T1 boost amp and four hardeners). Maybe once I get a few more levels on Guided Missile Precision I'll think about using it more.
You're way off on the Drake targeting range though, I get 66 km targeting range with just Long Range Targeting 2 and no mods. Which is just a few km further than my Heavy Missiles go so it works fine for me.
