IĈm a complete newbe here so this is probably a stupid question but how do I find asteroids with a particular type of Ore? Other than zipping from asteroid belt to asteroid belt to check each one out is there a quicker way? Is this where probes come into use?

Check my bio in-game for some mining-related links - from "People and Places" search for the character 'Mara Rinn', the "Show info".
If you know what type of ore you're looking for, the "ore grid" will indicate what systems you should be looking in. After identifying the system, it really is a case of warping to the field to find how many of what kinds of asteroids are left.
You might also have some luck asking in local chat - but beware of people luring you to their location in order to attack you!

Hey, cheers for that, really useful.
So just for my understanding, am I right in thinking that there's nowhere in the game that I could have worked this out for myself, I would have had to explore/probe etc?
Thanks again

I'm fairly sure that if you had advance probe/scanner skills, you'd be able to determine what ores are available - but only because asteroids are named after the ores they contain ("Asteroid (Veldspar)" for example).
If you're anywhere near as new as I am, you won't have access to probes and system scanners just yet. So all that's left is asking for directions, or wandering around to see for yourself.

That makes sense; guess it would be stupid if we could see everything thats available, defeat the object of skills etc
Thanks again

I don't think that's possible...Even if it is, it'd be easier to just look at the belts manually. Probes cost money, and take minutes to run.
However, probes can find hidden belts, where you can mine pretty much undisrupted :P
----------------------------------------------- Your Carebarestare wrecks Evul Piwat for 891 veldspar damage. |

a "survey scanner" will list all the asteroid ore types in range, as well as the amount of extractable ore. Once you find the ore types you are interested in, add them to your overview. You can save different overview settings to display only one ore and name that overview setting for that ore. Then if you load that setting when searching for the ore of choice, the overview will display all the asteroids in the belt that have that ore as soon as you warp to it.

Thanks mate. More useful info, much appreciated.
God this game is deep. I'm only on Day 2. For the first few hours I thought the game looked great, did a bit of mining etc and some missions but then started to think that I was gonna bore of this quickly, but now I'm beginning to realise how challenging it is. I love it
