I'm returning from quite a long break from EVE and I'm still a very new player (3mil SP). I'm getting ready to visit 0.0 sectors with some friends. My question is this:
I often hear people fit BS and HACs with Blasters over Railguns in PvP combat. I was wondering before I decide to train in Railgun or Blaster specialization what role these two gun play in the NON-PvE gameplay.
Is there an example of a ship you would fit with small or medium railgun for PvP combat or is that size railgun something you don't see used in PvP?
Many people mention their Megathron or Dominix fitted with Large Blasters over Large Rails. Is there a specific type of ship or role that a player specialized in Railguns can fill? So far most of my Gunnery training has been in that direction unfortunately/fortunately.
Thank you all for your time. Winter.

1) This belongs in Ships and Modules 2) For PvP the Gallente plus Caldari Rokh are snipers, hence they need the range to engage at extreme range. 3) AFAIK, Blasters+Afterburner are good for PvE, your descision.

Blasters are for up close and personal. Doing max damage.
Railguns are for medium too long ranges. Less damage, slow fire rate etc. But your are more out of harms way.
If ur using blasters, in most cases you wil also setup for either max damage. (3 / 4 magnetic field stabs) or Tank which would included 2 armor reps and resistance platings.
If your using railguns, ud fit maybe a plate for damage buffer and an adaptive nano plating. and then magstabs and tracking enhancers. Also because railguns need more powergrid to fit. you will need to fit a reactor control unit or power diagnostics to fit it all.
Major thing is. DONT MIX THE TWO! ---- There will be blood.. |

Its simple.
Rails = Range Blasters = Damage
It's all in how you prefer to play, since I gang alot I prefer rails on my ships, I fly mostly Interceptors/AF/Dictor and I try to keep around 10KM (Scram/web). Thus 125mm T2 rails with Antimatter give me most damage while maintaing the optimal I prefer to fight in. True Blasters cause more damage but I would need to be within 5KM which is generally asking to be smartbombed~
If I'm solo or know that I'll be in close quarters combat I run blasters W/tank and MWD, prey that I/we chew through the target faster then they can take me down.
Small guns are used all the time in combat, Mediums are more common though and Large are only on the BS's which are your more powerful slow moving fleet/gate camp
Large Rails are generally found on Caldari/Gallente Sniper BS ships and when used in conjunction with tacklers/med support they can be deadly, but solo can be the death of you if someone gets under your guns or out runs your tracking.
HAC's use blasters due to their tank, they have uber tank so go for full gank power to kill bigger targets faster :)

I apologize for posting this in the wrong forum. If someone could move it or tell me how I'd be happy to do so.
Bashia, Orin, and Kirjava thanks for your replies so far. I was hoping to find a roll for small to medium rails in PvP and that's given me some ideas.
I've spent hours reading up on the forums and sometimes it feels like there's too much to learn :)

P.S. I'm trained in Gallente ships so far.

for example a megathron fitted with 425mm railguns would perform a sniper role or long range damage dealer.

I fly gallente ships, and I usually fit them with the following guidelines. Small fights I go with blasters to MWD (microwarpdrive) towards the target, deal max damage while tanking (usually passivetank) thier damage for the short while it takes me to kill them. The point of the setup is to make such ammount of damage that youll break through the opponents tank before they can break through your, even though you might not have armor repps, hardners... As you can se its a dangerous tactic, if something goes wrong you cant bail or warp (youre within warp scram range) hence youll die.
Bigh fights "fleetbattles". I go with railguns, everyone need to be able to shoot at a single "primary target" hence I cant go microwarping around the blob with all the lagg and stuff. I need to be able to engage the enemy att close to long range without moving my ship around. Compared to the blastersetups, rails enables you to engage outside warpscram range which means you can probably get out alive if you face a stronger opponent.
Although its the general opinion that all real men fly blasterboats, its a opinion that I fully support

Blasters are very dangerous indeed ~!~ Only reason I prefer rails is due to my non-exsitant tank, I trade tank for speed :)
