it would be sweet if you could have your ship be a certain color scheme

Old topic but agreed.
Going by the models themselves, it appeares there are 2 or 3 "material zones" that could be modified. As an option allow character to to choose from the various faction skins and piant jobs.
Either way, have the ships return to their default texture after epackaginf. *** "Some would call me a Demon. Others, a Vampire. But if the truth be told, I'm a child of the moon and a Goddess among men." Free pint of blood for the Dev who agrees |

Add an option to turn it off at need for high-lag situations, and I endorse this. However, I cannot see the bandwidth needs being particularly high if there are only day, a few dozen possible color/pattern combos for any given hull, so a few bytes will suffice to definitively establish a ship's color scheme.
Sure, we'd see black everything, but seriously, who doesn't want to see a black variant of ship X? -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. Never such a thing as a "last chance". ;) -Rauth |

well going by the "hotness" of the Zealot, I can easily see ships using a color scheme similar to it also.. that ship is freeking sweet.. lol

I support painting ships in Eve.
Considering a number of other games support up to 64 different players all with different weapons, uniforms, belt items, camouflage, Eve should be able to do it too.
I feel the Devs have a serious sense of 'style for the Eve ships, and they want to keep it that way. However, people will ALWAYS want to paint their ships. My Drake looks just like EVERY other Drake out there. Its 'consistent style' versus 'player driven diversity'
Considering the cost of ship paint is one material layer/texture with a few hex codes for painting different parts of that texture, the overhead is very low. Granted, for very high ship numbers/blobs, it could be auto disabled/faded out etc. And an option for not seeing ship colours at all.
But 99% of the time you'd only be looking at max 5-10 ships at any one time.
Sure, any "Paint your ship" scheme will have pink/green monstrosities out there, but hey it just makes them easier to shoot.
Painting should also cost ISK. It costs a fair bit to paint a Jumbo jet - thats why you hardly ever see more than the tail painted... why would a starship be any different?
Maybe paint would carry a -small- penalty to sig radius (as you're covering up whatever low-reflection paint the ship was manufactured with, the ship is easier to 'see').
Even the 'Red Dwarf' had a paint job!!!

I like the idea of colour schemes, and the idea of being able to turn off in high lag situation. Wouldn't it be cool if say, a fleet command could control the primary colour of every ship in the fleet, wing commands the secondary etc.

Yeah, it would be cool if you could pimp your ship. I've always wanted to add neon lights and massive thrusters on my ship.
But I guess just custom paint would be cool for start. I like the idea.

I to would like to paint my ships, and maybe there could be spots where your corp logo was displayed, and perhaps your alliance one as well. I think the best place would probably be by the engines for the logos. Homeworld Vet/Refugee |

I think you should be able to choose a base color scheme and then a different color for accents like stripes and engine fairings and such. In addition to that they should let us put our corp logo on th ship as well as letting us upload a personal logo and put that on there too. --Bird of Prey: Forum God

I'm sure this is a very old topic suggestion. I can't understand why not. Color pallet wouldn't effect bandwidth. A patch with paint options would do the trick. A little more graphics intensive but not bandwidth.. Get creative and let people refine for paint ingredients at the cost of minerals. People should be prepared to see a big pink freighter at some point if they do add painting industry. You know it will happen..

Do you know how many black everythings you will see with the occasional gimmick corp flying pink ships.
It is a terrible idea

I'd have to agree with this. Part of the magic of faction and T2 ships is having a pretty ship to accomodate the fact that its over 20x more expensive.
Although I find the idea of being able to fly a giant pink thorax around space to be awesome (not like a phobos ;)), It would just ruin the uniqueness of T2 ships in that respect.
What I would put forward instead, and what (I believe I once saw as a teaser from ccp), would be corporation or alliance logos that you could "spray" onto your ship (ie. have the option to show either logos). The only problem I see with this is that it would cause more server strain, and Id rather reduce server lag than have prettier ships because I have seen how ugly the server can handle with a 600+ ship fleet battle.

That's a point I agree with.
Could possibly be solved, if: - just the T2-ships are paintable,
- paiting is expensive, so just T2-ships and perhaps BS etc. will be paited although it is possible to paint T1-ships,
- T1-ships just get small parts to paint on. So you still can build a corporation or ally-color-scheme for the T1-ships too. Probably you will build it quite colourful (otherwise no one will recognize it). This could solve the problem with the thousands of black ships too I think.
