Take away all factory slots from players. Make all factory/resurche slots the property of the corp that owns the station. The station owner can say how many slots are available for public use. And now the NPC Factory manager would collect manufactoring requests and process them in order, doing as many slots are available for public use at one time.
A player wanting to manufacture something would place a manufactoring order, be charged a fee when the order begins production.
In the orders tab you would then see all your queued up requests and how many orders are queued up before you. Also display how many slots are available for public use.
This would eliminate the congestion for factory and resurche slots entirely. And if a corp builds a station then they can set how many slots are available for public and how many are resurved for corp member use, which would be another queue of requests.

Now that could work !
So say I put a build job in the cue. it is processed as soon as there is space and I pay a set fee for that job.
Good one

I think a better idea would be to limit the slots dependant on skill, 1 slot at lvl 1, 2 at lvl 2 etc. Corps could be limited by the skill lvl of the factory manager or head researcher multiplied by 2, giving them double the slots of a solo player.

The queue idea has been suggested a few times and personally I like it, but the Dutch auction at regular intervals system still gets my vote.
Limiting slots by skill would work but is unfortunate as for my feeling it doesnt fit the capatilist feeling of the game - and there is no way to dislodge the owners or push the prices up/down.
Auctioning slots automatically means the prices in the busy areas would sky rocket - while the prices in the outer areas would be stable and reasonable. (prices governed by supply and demand)
Perhaps the best solution would be a mixture of all 3 though - stations in newbie systems offer queues so newbies can always play with the manufacturing/research systems while factories everywhere else are available to auction - but you could only own as many as your skills allow.
Player owned stations factory slots could be set as private, private(corp access), available on queues for the public, or available to auction.
"Leased" factory slots (via the auctions) could be set to private, private(corp access) or available on queues for the public.
This means you could even make some money by leasing a factory and then letting others use it for their jobs.
Trust me to come up with the most complex solution to a simple problem.

There is a skill for that, called "Mass Production".
Sorry, I haven't tried to use factories after release yet, but I was certain this skill is in use. So, it is not?! Darn, that's sad. :( Or did they remove it from game alltogether?!
I start to wonder, how it is possible that at least some skills work, because as it turns out, every day I play, I find out that yet another skill doesn't work :( _______________________________________________ If ifs and ands were pots and pans, I would grow mushrooms in my pants. |

I think the salution is simple raise the rent to like 250k a week. Then the ones people dont use will be unrented. Cause they dont want to pay. Also realisticly the Megacorps wouldn't want the people renting them to make millions off them. They would raise the price so they made the profit. And if you think this is a high price it is not i can make 250k in 20mins buy mining. Corps and players only really need about 4 slots of each. Not whole stations. so the cost would be fare.

You think 250k a slot would solve the problem? You were really slow in school were you not? You plainly state in your own argument that 250k isnt but a short mining stint and then expect us to believe that this easy to get 250k would stop a person from holding a whole station worth of slots? nonsense, they would just hold the slots by mining more and teh price for their purchase would skyrocket to the benefit of a bunch of squatters. I say screw all squatters and put all public facilities on a per job basis and limit lab jobs to one a person at the same station until others in the list have had their job run. Meaning you put your three lab jobs in and the second and third get bumped until everyone else in line has had a job run. if you cannot provide for newer players to have access to the games various components then they are not getting their moneys worth. Period.
