You have to be bloody pants-on-head ******** to use a file called boot.ini for your program. I mean seriously, what programmer worth a damn names their game files after a crucial system file? Sure, blame the guy who forgot to add the \, but make sure to blame the tool who setup CCP's file naming convention.

It affects all Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 users that have EVE installed on the same drive as the system.

if you have system restore turned on you should have a file called boot.ini.backup
if you copy and paste this file into your c:/ drive and rename it boot.ini
you should be ok

Hat's off to the EVE players! You all rock. Between the help channel and this thread I was able to fix the problem without having to do a 'system restore'
Thanks for sharing your computer knowledge.

This spoiled what would have been the best patch release ever IMO, got the servers up ahead of schedule and everything was shiny. Just glad I only rebooted one of my machines as the other two were a lot easier to fix.

Wow... good job. Thank god for backup boot.ini files! Strangely, I BSOD'd before I heard about this (Stupid me, I used two EVE clients with sound running on both), and I booted fine... but I checked later and didn't have the boot.ini file... how did that work?

Guys... didn't you hear? This is all part of the need for speed initiative. Utterly hosing about 1/3 (give or take) of EVE's player base results in far less lag.
Even more tinfoil... this happens shortly after the release of an officially supported MAC and Linux client.
Seriously though, EPIC fail on CCP's part. |

I think the specifics are this will only affect
those running XP(any version) (and perhpas any previous version of windows) those who installed eve onto the same partition as their OS
I think that's it basically.
So......since I put EVE onto an entirely different hard drive........i should be safe????????

Thats the best idea for keeping the file alive! There is also a backup copy in the Windows folder as well. See the above posts for locations.

Originally by: Dark Shikari CCP is going to be very lucky if they don't get sued.
13. DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES In no event shall CCP, its affiliates, licensors or suppliers be liable to you or to any third party for any special, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive or exemplary damages (including without limitation, lost profits or lost data), arising out of or in connection with your Account, the System, Software, Game, Game Content, User Content, EULA, or any other services or materials provided in connection therewith, whether based on warranty, contract, tort or any other legal theory, and whether or not CCP is advised of the possibility of such damages, and even if any stated remedy fails of its essential purpose.
So not really.
Such a statement is completely meaningless legally. There is still nothing stopping them from being sued.
If the statement was actually enforceable, for example, if the EVE client somehow caused computers to explode, killing their operators, CCP would not be liable.
Depending on what country you live in an EULA is not legally binding. Since you have to first purchase the product before you can "sign" the contract. They also in many cases contradict consumer rights, and provider obligation legislation.
As for suing CCP over this, you would have to either lose a large ammount of expensive data and be very vindictive; or, have very deep pockets and a lot of free time.
Finally. People don't make windows partitions anymore? ---

Yes... exactly... only people with eve installed onto their C: drive running WIN 2000/XP/2003/NT that downloaded the premium content upgrade are screwed it appears (I have heard the full client with premium content was not effected, just the stand alone premium content update, but who knows) |

Worked for me, I copied the boot.ini before patching, and pasted it back afterwards. Rebooted and everything is still working. Problem is, you need to know this BEFORE you patch, won't help all the poor sods that already patched and lost it. I sincerely hope everyone is able to fix the issue before rebooting, or they're in for a big nasty suprise :/
Yeah, I got a bit of warning from a friend and gave it some thought on the train home.
Moot point since the upgrade patch has been removed. Tempted to do a full client download... I wants my shiny upgraded Hurricane.

Not that I can find. XP Pro SP2 OEM, all system and hidden files/folders view options enabled (good godsdamn there's a lot of crap in the windows folder) and I can not find said boot.ini.backup or a /pss folder. I would think that's an option, something the user would have had to enabled beforehand. Something to do with updates or auto-system restore (settings I have disabled).

PLZ NOTE THIS IS NOT CORRECT. THE FULL INSTALL IS NOT SAFE! IT DOES DELETE THE BOOT.INI. I just did the full install lucky i kept checking.

What is the precise filename of the file you downloaded that caused you to experience the issue?
Had you used a premium patch on the test server earlier?
These answers will help CCP narrow down the issue.
