I'm one of those crazy people who enjoys mining; I find it relaxing, plus it has the added benefit of being a fairly work-friendly activity
I'm keen to give mining in 0.0 a whirl but I have to confess I've only ever stepped foot in 0.0 once (albeit in a shuttle) and didn't stay there for more than a few minutes. Are miners welcome in 0.0 (assuming I can even make it past the 0.4 gate campers in my Hulk!) or am I likely to be podded on sight?
Do any corps even tolerate unaffiliated miners in their system?
Any info would be great!

Get friendly in Providence. I've not quite got my Covetor out beyond the empire boundary because of a Burn Eden campfest on the 0.0 side of the border, but even in .1, its neutral friendly enough I was able to mine for hours without being bothered.
A little word of advice for 0.0 belts. Take some friendly firepower with you. Belt rats in no sec tend to be pretty abusive. Two battleships with escorts popping around you can spell a REALLY bad day for a mining boat, especially since some of the frigate escorts tend to warp scramble.

Definitely. Miners are very welcome in 0.0, but usually only if you join an 0.0 alliance and contribute somehow to their cause. Even indirectly, through industry and finance, and possibly directly, through system defense, you can be a nice asset for an 0.0 alliance. Don't be shy about reading alliance recruitment topics and speaking with recruiters. ---

you'll need docking rights to do anything with the ore that you happen to extract in any true 0.0 system, so you're best bet is joining an alliance in 0.0 or making friends in providence or something.
you can always try your luck in npc 0.0, but again you'll wanna make friends first.

Thanks for the info guys, plenty for me to work with. Sounds like the first order of business is to get out there and make some friends for docking rights.

You don't need to "get out there". You can likely find a corp looking for miners in the corp recruitment forums. I know a few different corps in different areas of space that I would be happy to recommend depending on what you'd like to do in the game that are appropriate for a newer player to the game.
Just keep in mind that most 0.0 alliances do require you to contribute to the defense of the systems you're in. It's not just about mining.
Mail me in game if you'd like a few suggestions.
