Edited by: CaptainGordon on 13/11/2007 22:04:48 Goons are members of the Something Awful community. They are an extremely tight-knit group which has stood the test of time. The entire purpose of this community is to make fun of stupid people on the Internet and all the stupid cliches that are born from the Internet's worst parts.
That doesn't mean that goons are facist 100% of the time towards non-goons (further reffered to as "pubbies"), it merely means that goons do not place the same value and emphasis on "pubbie" values as other "pubbies" do.
Eve Online is the perfect example of such conflict, where the general public audience tends to take the game way too seriously. Such attitude provokes the majority of goon outbursts, since most of the goons don't believe into taking anything on the Internet seriously, especially the parts of it that deal with entertainment. Games are not meant to be taken seriously in real life, never mind the extent of fanaticism to which some games, like Eve or World of Warcraft has driven some people to. Such people deserve all the ridicule they get, since our entire community lives and breathes satire. Most of goon actions are motivated by a simple desire for this satire and comedy, in-game or out of it. The recent storm of horrible posts in CAOD is the perfect example of a huge joke, that went over the heads of the most "pubbies" here.
Before the Great Eve War, CAOD was dominated by a bunch of absolutely arrogant, power-tripping Band of Brothers posters who thought that wars are won with "kill/death ratios". They proceeded to use colorful phrases, like "industrial backbone" and "kill efficiency" to describe how they are utterly crushing their opposition, when in fact what was going on in the game was quite different compared to what was being posted here. The entire forum was their playground and virtually no one complained about that at the time. In fact, such ridiculous circle jerking was encouraged by the general "pubbie" population of CAOD. The very fact that the CAOD crowd is reacting very differently to the exact same trolling from goons now, abeit under a slightly different flavor, is the cause of much comedy among us. It is rare to see a community so hypocritical and so incredibly stuck up that they cant even take their own satire well.
We had a fantastic laugh at your expense, and we will continue to do so as long as you are going to provide us with this opportunity. This is the essence of what goons do in Eve - its so much fun to play this game because its absolutely packed with stupid people, who cause a lot of drama when the game doesn't go their way.
And we absolutely love it.

Eve is less of a game than most other MMO's. The complexity of dealing with a mega-corporation and vast alliance, the logistics... hell, it's almost enough like running a real corporation that you should be able to put it on your resume. Maybe that's why some people take the game seriously. They enjoy the life-like complexity of it. Not because they're taking it too seriously.

The thing is though, its still a game. A game that has no bearing on real life what-so-ever. It exists to entertain, nothing more.

It's not quite as clear cut as that. The difference between the previous trolling you mention and your own brand of it, is that I can parse their statements and say "this is bravado, this is fact" and so on, and still come off respecting them for communicating intelligently.
Whereas every Goon post just has me rolling my eyes and wishing Doc would finish building that DeLorean so I can go back in time and prevent Something Awful from ever, ever, happening. Whatever message or statement on memes or patterns that was trying to be empasised is lost in the noise.
It's kind of ironic, really. The Goons "invading" the game to make fun of stupid internet cliches, only to become one themselves.
EDIT: I do want to say, though, that it's refreshing to see intelligence being exhibited for once from a Goon on COAD, and think everyone would benefit from more examples of such.

1. The OP is very alien and ungoony. I expect him to be ridiculed on the GF board.
But for the sake of argumentation:
a.) SA community isn't equal to Goonfleet community. Just because the EvE Goons recruit themselves from SA doesn't mean SA adheres to the same values as Goonfleet. In fact somethingwaful is too big to make the case for homogeneous and definable SA values. Each sub forum there has developed it's own culture.
b.) Goons take the game much more seriously than most other alliances in this game. Just look at all their nerd rage.
c.) It's interesting that Goons explain again and again their obnoxious behavior with alleged previous behavior by BoB. For a organization that states again and again that they don't care about their public image, they sure make a lot of excuses.
