I herd that the computers that the FanFest PVP torny was played on had fraps running.... Any chance you would put that out? I mean, just youtube it if you don't want to host it.

Why do people's first concern comes down to hosting every time I really don't get. I mean we're talking 40 computers that were set up for the tournament. An entire day's worth of fighting recorded. Thousands and thousands of gb in pure uncompressed avi. The logistical effort in recording all that... collecting it all... editing it all so its not just hundreds of hours worth of small ship combat that would mean nothing to the average person.
But hey at least we could host it on you tube so we don't have to worry about hosting.
... No we didn't fraps the pvp tournament. That would have been insane . We do however have some ingame footage from the final thats mixed into a general "pvp tournament" wrap up video we broadcasted last Saturday a couple times and should be available online soon.

?Really? Ever watch a soccer match and not just the highlights on tv? Well, we don't even get highlights.

Well there is your answer! Why do people ask about hosting? Because the ease of just dropping the footage on an internet hosting system would put it out there for us to see. The only reason I could think you wouldn't do this was to hold on to the data for some future video.
But that's not happening, so why not just dump the data to youtube? That's what it's there for. You could give some footage that the next 'loxyrider' would use to make something.

That's cool, I look forward to it...I guess. It's just disappointing. Both that you didn't FRAPS it, and that my simple question led to your little flame about the little people.
Please note, I love the original LoxyRider vids... I'm just disappointed by the pompous response you gave to a simple question.

Edited by: niroku on 08/11/2007 08:46:01 i wonder why people insist on ignoring the fundamental aspects of the physical labour involved in collecting, editing, compressing and uploading vast amounts of video data - ignoring the fact that it takes an inordinate amount of time doing so when people seem to assume it can be done -yesterday- .
youtube isn't some magical solution to your video woes .
if it was so easy, why hasn't someone beaten loxy and the evetv crew to it ? why surely ? it's so easy, isn't it ? wait... no it isn't .
wake up .

Loxy's said it already, but you missed it. let me reiterate. USING MATHS! :D
40 PCs, at an average of 4 fights each. that's 160 fights. At 4 minutes (made up figure) a match, that's 640 minutes of footage. I'm pretty sure that over 10 hours of footage from 40 different sources is a bit of a tricky thing to put together.
but yeah, we'll just bung it on youtube _

The people who paid for those tickets, and attended fanfest, saw the tourney. Whats your arguement?

Your attempt's at Hitting record for that Uber long long 4 min final must really of been a strain on you guy's you are all now snappy from lack of sleep. Funny how 3 other site's have coveradge of it and other fanfest vid's, They must have horde's of slave shop worker's all pressing the record button at once as it's such hard work.

I wouldn't worry about it cause it is painfully clear that some of the people that went to Fanfest think they are a step above everyone else now for some reason. If the talks & that tourney were the main events I personally wouldn't travel 3 quarters of the way around the world just for that.
Anyway there are a number of video's from Fanfest circulating on sites now anyway so just take a bit of time to go have a look/search around. There might be some links on the SHC forums if you have a look seeing they seem to have better quality everything on there.

Ok let me just be clear that I was having a bit of a joke with my post, I apologize if you took it to be a flame its just that a lot of people seem to think that hosting is the main issue but its really all the work before we get to hosting.
We did not record all the tournament on fraps because it would have been a nightmare to do and wouldn't really mean much to anyone after the event. We do however have the final recorded and that will be made available soon along with some other videos, starting on this Saturday and over a couple weeks most of the footage will be made available.

Awesome.
I guess i'm just disapointed that the eve client/server stup does not have a mechanism to record events on the server side, and alow playback on the client side.
I believe that something like this would benefit the community for several reasons -Playback of ingame events for review -Playback of 'inconsequential' pvp tornys (Like fanfest, or player run events) -Playback or close to realtime viewing of the aliance pvp tornys... talking to my friends in USA, Europe, Iceland..the online viewing gets hosed to those of us outside of iceland.
Also, it would free up LoxyRider (hopefully) to make another sweet vid.
A simple example of what I'm talking about is found w/ the "Magic: The Gathering Online" software. When you take all the graphics out, it's just a small set of commands that pass to the client instead of tons of video. I've done software proposals at my university, and would be happy to do a wright up if CCP would be interested.

Anyone up for a challenge?
I send you a couple of hundred Gb of video, you edit it so its actually interesting, compress it, check it and upload to a host.
Oh, at the same time you need to research, write, film, edit, check, refilm, edit, check, compress, check and upload a weekly show. Then you need to read and respond to emails, chase up stories news clones etc etc, edit and compile thier work cross check it for relevance and accuracy etc etc.
You have 5 days.
Up for it?
If youre really good you might get to squeeze some sort of life in there. if youre REALLY good you might even get to play some eve too. although I very much doubt youd want to.
If you can pull it off then you too would likely be in iceland for free next year!

i <3 eve.
Im not at all an expert on any of this stuff, but given the size and complexity of eve id guess its not really viable, the effort of tracking and recording the actions of 35000+ players already stretches the servers, I imagine the additional data showing the individual movements of players in relation to each other, let alone more detailed information would be simply phenominal.
Im guessing the servers dont record a specific amount of information about individual ship movements, more the general stuff lie xyz has fired at abc targetted someone etc etc. Adding in the exact position in space orientation, which way the guns are pointing and so on might just be a little too much info. especially X 35000 (albeit probably half of them will be sat in station spinning thier ships.)
Generci gut scene video clips probably wouldnt be acceptable, so it would have to be realtime imaging, either recorded, or generated on the fly....
but hey, if you have an idea, write it up properly and suggest it, theyll listen if its good enough.

recording a client isnt that hard, remember quake demos?
say you just have the client record all state data to a file then have it perform playback?
would be a nice feature in that you could learn from your combat mistakes by watching the demo over and get more learning out of that 300m isk ship loss
this is prolly asking too much, how about we have the splash screen not churn at 100% cpu utilization with all those fabulous tasklets first?

That's the thing, on site server setups (PVP torny @ eve fest) it could probobly be done server side, but a client based solution is better i think.
Think of it as saving all the packets if info that your eve client does anyway. Haven't checked them, but i'm guessint it gets a lot of informaion about your direct area.
Something captures the data and stores in in an eveplayback.file Something in the eve client can load and play these eveplayback.file(s) instead of be in the actual game. Or a stand alone player that uses the engine.
POW! If you get realy fancy, you could have the client take streamed content/video too! maybe we could all watch/hear the aliance torny w/ out interuptions and jump view to different ships too!
no time for a write up, exams :(

Some fights were good, some were boring but overall, I think people overvalue the PvP fights at fanfest - there was very little preperation and effort put into it, just a lot of fun for the people doing it. It was fun to watch, but onlyy because you had a beer in one hand and you could not go outside with the beer to smoke. . . -----------

I think the PVP tournaments are something CCP should think more about. I mean they have a CCG. CCG manufacturer's model is based on tournaments, all be it to keep a competitive environment that keeps people buying new sets to stay competitive. However PVP Torny's in game would probably benefit the online players as well, since it can allow for newer players to get some crazy action months to a year before they can fly the ships fitted properly.
oh, and 2 of my corp mates were on the 2nd place team. That's mainly why I'm interested in the footage.
CCP could probably even charge 5-10$/month more to allow ppl to connect to a PVP Torny server. I'd pay.
