Ok so I'm almost entirely a noob when it comes to fitting ships for any purpose. My specialty is trading, science, and manufacturing. What I'm looking for is the most effective way to fit a Viator for empire hauling to reduce the chances of being suicide ganked as much as possible, given a valuable cargohold (say 3-4 billion). My understanding is that this will most likely come from some combination of speed, stealth, and ability to withstand warp scrambling.

If yes, you actually want to somehow hopefully survive until Concord shows up. Some sort of nano fitting might work, anything that lets you get back to the gate fast - problematic with (double) webbers around.
Alternatively something like this in a Mastodon.
Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II
Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Invulnerability Field II
[empty high slot]
Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer I Core Defence Field Purger I
424dps tankable on kin (69%, 42k HP) 470dps tankable on therm and exp (72%, 52k HP) 752dps tankable on em (82.5%, 110k HP)
Apart from that... best protection - don't haul 3-4 billion in one run. -- [17:47] <Mephysto> its dead, jim |

This advice would save you far more in terms of hassle and potential loss in the run than fitting to survive. -

Can you chop the valuables up into smaller pieces than hauler sized?
If so the obvious tactic of sealed courier packages presents itself. Ferry a few dozen of those alternatively AFK and not to get gankers used to getting squat for their efforts. A couple of weeks of that before your real run and they should be banished from highsec due to sec status loss. =)
Other than that, yup. Cloak up high, as much in the way of resists and and HP as you can muster. Higher agility or a MWD won't save you when hauling several B, your gankers will make sure to bring 9 points of scram and 2x web on insta-locking tacklers. =)
I highly recommend taking a PvP course (such as the one offered by Agony Unleashed) to get a good idea re: ship fittings and basic PvP game mechanics.

I have no immediate plans to actually be hauling around that much worth in value, but I wanted to be prepared in the case that I do. Even less than that, say 1 billion. I regularly haul 500m or so and have never even been actively targeted.
What I was hoping to hear is that if I make my ship fast enough to align and warp that I could maybe get away with it because they wouldn't even be able to grab me and hit me before I was gone. Assuming I'm running around with two WCS giving me a +4 rating the odds of me being locked down are low. After that all I need to do is make sure I align and warp fast and I'm good to go. The assumption is that I've there actively and warping to zero.
If I'm fast enough, with enough WCS, it would basically require enough fire power to kill me before I enter warp correct? And if I add in just a little tank on top of that, it would take even more firepower. Is my line of thinking wrong and is there another way I could be taken out or locked down?

Just fit expanders in the lows, and cap batteries in the mids. That's all you'll ever need.
Plenty of cargo room, and lots of cap for those long warps.

You don't need tank you just need to align quickly. Since the change in the last patch to transports this is even more apparent.
Fit mass reduction rigs and mass reduction/agility in the lows and enjoy the quick alignment. You will get to your destination much quicker and the gankers will barely have time to read your name on the overview.
Fit a MWD and a cloak also, I'll leave it to you to figure that one out.
Obviously you don't use auto pilot either. |
