Edited by: Kelduum Revaan on 20/09/2007 21:28:42 First, apologies in advance for the rather long post. I like to avoid being to verbose when I can, however the situation does dictate it somewhat.
Secondly, an introduction for those of those who aren't familiar with us - Ivy League is the alliance of Eve University, a neutral training corp founded over three and a half years ago, as the learning curve for new pilots then was actually steeper than is is now (believe it or not!).
Throughout this time, we have taken new pilots, trained them in various aspects of EVE, everything from PvP to Industry, and let them free into the great wilds to make their own name in the galaxy.
The instructors and management of E-UNI get no remuneration, and the small tax on bounties and mission rewards, along with donations from well-wishers and our directors, keeps the wallet in a generally positive position while we provide free skillbooks for members and maintain our network of offices in the starter stations.
Anyway, finally, I get to the point...
Recently, we have been the targets of a number of wars - while not exactly something we run and hide from, these do disrupt lessons, and typically restrict recruitment, preventing us form getting on with our mission of helping the new pilots.
In the last couple of months, we have somehow managed to attract around half a dozen wars, and we are somewhat at a loss to explain the sudden surge, as we previously went quite some time with no wars at all.
- We maintain a strict neutral stance - We do not get involved in affairs of others, and are strictly NRDS.
- We have strict policies regarding the do's and don'ts simply to avoid any issues, and discipline members who step out of line.
- We don't have multiple billions in the wallet - some people mistakenly believe we put the noobs to work in the Veldspar mines until we all have Titans.
- We are open and approachable - We have a public channel which people can drop in if they have any problems, and we have contacts on the Alliance info.
After speaking to representatives of the ones declaring war, the reasons have been invariably similar. Among them, in no particular order, are:
- We have around 1300 members - This is not entirely true. While we do have 1200 members on the books, we have around half that in active members (obviously Eve isn't for everyone), and far fewer in experienced PvP pilots.
- It would be fun - So far I haven't heard a good explanation for this, to be honest. Either they like to fight larger groups, and prefer difficult odds, or they are after easy kills of one week old pilots.
- Belief that we can (and in fact would be willing to) pay protection money - This really is a very puzzling concept. As mentioned, we don't have billions in the bank, and a volunteer teaching corp cant exactly rake in the ISK, when most of its members have less than 2 million SP and little more ISK in their wallets.
- We will fight when we need to - Although we aren't a PvP training corp, and don't claim to be, it is a large element of Eve and we will fight when it is called for. We do have a few experienced FCs, and occasional 'live fire' exercises are beneficial.
The only other things we have come up with is that we seem to be a nice easy empire target, and the recent entry in the Fourth Alliance Tournament raised our profile sufficiently so that we have become a target.
So, I am opening this up to the community. Are there any other reasons anyone can think of for anyone to declare war on a neutral volunteer teaching corporation? Is there anything any of our members did which we should know about? Or, is it simply 'for fun'?

Unfortunately there are just alot of sad ruin the game gankers out there.
Best thing to do is wait them out, or talk to the CEO's and hope they are respectful people.

That's EVE. People get bored and look for ganks. They don't want to work hard for their kills either, so a big corporation with a lot of targets should provide a lot of cheap thrills.

If they want frigate kills, the war-deccers need to run Level 1 missions in Empire instead. It's more profitable, and has about the same degree of loserdom.
Eve University can defend itself well enough from the war-deccers, but they can't recruit during war-decs. The reason? Because you can't have 1 day old noobs being blown out of starting stations by griefers after they sign up.
1-2 week of war-dec every couple months is PvP practice. Non-stop wardeccing of Eve University is interference with an institution that is for the good of Eve.

Shame, 'cos I think the work Eve Uni does is great and I was pleased with their turnout in the alliance tournament. Honestly I think the reason war is declared so often is easy ganks. That's really about it.

Edited by: acompton on 20/09/2007 22:15:34 Edited by: acompton on 20/09/2007 22:14:18 Read his post Bandwagon, they are not adverse to the war, they just don't want constant end-to-end decs, because it interferes with their ability to recruit/help brand new players.
Why not propose "open season" the first week of every month and ask the hostiles to push their decs into that specific week.
That way they get their jollies, you get some (limited) combat experience for the newer pilots and you don't lose you ability to recruit for the other 3 weeks.
If they violate this proposal just post it here and all of the alliances that are bored can war dec the violators to try and help enforce it...
There really isn't any reason for them to NOT to go along with this unless they are just sheer asshats (yes this is possible)
Good Luck Eve Uni.

You perhaps arent familiar with EU, you might want to take a look at their killboard before presuming to tell them how to suck eggs, generally they are very successful in wars.
Indeed the only negative note is how frequently the opposing side will abuse alts to slip spies into the corp prior to any war dec. A problem because it can cast suspicion upon real new players, the FCs having to balance having a spy in their gang against being as inclusive as possible.
As for the war decs, I assume the publicity from the tournament has its downs as well as ups. Looking at the EU killboard it seems yet another group are having a rude awakening assuming wardecing the EU would be an easy way to pad their killboard.
Good luck and have fun guys.

Quoted for truth.
My sympathies go out to you Eve University, and I wish you the best of luck in finally getting these wars over with so you can return to recruiting new students. I hope that new pilots can continue to rely on your valuable services for years to come. ---

I agree with Kelduum... wardecking any academy corp, especially E-UNI, just for the sake of some easy ganks is pathetic. There's plenty of mission farming and mining corps out there to dec, as well as 0.0 alliance's traders to pick on.

Here is an interesting idea. If Eve University posts who wardecs them and have a few corps / alliances wardec the greifers.
That will certainly give those guys a fight :)

They did at one point, which is why we sent Eve University some ships, looks like it's time for some materials again.
Btw a pro-bono contract with aspiring nooblet merc outfits against these guys perhaps could be something to consider?

It's ashame that a corp that dedicated their efforts into helping us newbs for the last few years gets wardecced for no apparent reason. I am one of those recruits that are waiting for the wars to end so i can join and get a little bit of experience. I am learning well enough on my own but with their teachings and having their corp on my resume will help me learn and progress further into my eve career as a trader/researcher. Hopefully the nanotardz and the phoenix mercenaries will come to realize their actions harms eve as a whole and put an end to the wars. Good luck eve-u.

Name and shame please. Let those who think it is fun/funny to wardec people working for the good of the community feel the wrath of those who appreciate the work you do. I'm sure that some people will show them the same respect that they are so eager to show your members.
