Edited by: DubanFP on 09/09/2007 22:57:42 Watched a show on stinging insects and it got me interested. What area of the world and what kind of painful stinging insects do you get there? I'm not talking about your rare potentially deadly insects, mostly your teveryone's going to get painfully stung at least oncev insects. Also how would you rate it on the "pain" scale, 1 to 10. I'm guessing the main perpetrators are going to be kinds of bees and ants.
We get 3 main kinds of stinging insects here in CT, USA.
We have 2 kinds of Yellow Jackets. They look nearly identical except for a couple key differences. One is smaller, less noticeable, and much more likely to sneak into your house & sting you. The other is larger & more painful "the kind in the picture at the link". Both are very aggressive and prone to stinging repeatedly. Small = 2/10, Large 5/10.
Then there's the much more painful Hornets "technically a kind of paper wasp". The kind we have here are nearly entirely black with very few yellow markings. Less invasive and not as aggressive as the yellow jackets, but larger and definite winner in the pain scale. 9/10 for common stinging insects. Very wicked sting.
What kind of common stinging insects do you guys have around where you live, and what general area would that be?

Edited by: Yao Shiu on 09/09/2007 23:01:29 well, the UK's pretty rubbish for that kinda thing (thankfully!)
I'm in south England, we've got wasps and bees, neither of which I've been stung by.
there's probably a few others, maybe hornets, (not proper nasty hornets) but they're not common as far as I know.
edit: well, maybe more stings than I thought, good ol' bbc Linkage (2006)

Spiders - Funnel Web (2nd most venomous after the Brazilian Wandering Spider), Reb Back and White Tail (bites from this nasty can cause necrotising arachnidism - rotting of the flesh). Ants - Bulldog Ant, Jumper Ant bite causes anaphylactic shock - death. Paralysis Tick
We also have 8/10 most poisonous snakes (including the taipan - most lethal), the box jellyfish (2nd most venomous creature in the world) and the stonefish

Yeah but are bites from these things really that common? Like i've been stung by each of my examples at least once, quite a few times for the smaller yellowjacket. As have most people around here.
Also we have Black widows "nuerotoxin, dangerous to children" & brown recluses "necrotoxin". It's just VERY rare for someone to get bitten. ___________

Here in Southeast Texas we have....
Red Imported Fire Ants: These are probably the worst because of how common they are and the fact that they swarm and bite repeatedly. I once got 40 bites to my foot in about 10 seconds. (didn't realize I was standing in a nest) This site has some cool pics
Africanized Honey Bees: Every now and then someone gets swarmed pretty bad. Once one stings you they release a chemical so all the others know to sting. More hype than threat though.
Brown Recluse Spider: Their bites turn pretty awsome if untreated. WARNING: AWSOMELY GRAPHIC SPIDER BITE INSIDE
Black Widow Spider: Same Genus as the Austrailian Red-Back. Not bad enough to kill a healthy person.
Velvet Ant or Cow Ant: Wingless Wasp. The worst insect bite I have ever had the displeasure of receiving. The only bite that ever made me cry from pain.
Paper Wasp: Stung by one a long time ago. It swelled up bad, but the Velvet ant was much worse in pain. Seeing one will cause anyone to panic though. (they're kinda big and evil looking)
Yellowjacket: I'm lucky enough to have never been stung by one.
Bald Faced Hornet: Again, never been stung. I typically keep my distances from bees, wasps, and hornets.
------ wait...what? |

Ed. Oh and we have those yellow jackets here in the uk. We know them only as wasps though, the type looks identical to the pic you have there. I once got stung by one as a child when I drank from a can of soda and it was in the can, got me on tongue and cheek.
Now that was a world of pain man.

Hobo spiders can be found around here... otherwise the normal stuff. Some hornets, wasps, and yellow jackets.
My only real personal experience was stepping on an yellow jacket nest right before turning 6 and receiving over 50 stings. I went into shock and all that fun stuff, had to be taken to the hospital. Have a slight phobia of yellow insects now lol... nothing I don't get over in a few seconds though. --------

Woot, let's hear it for the South, where just about everything including the weather's trying to kill you!
True story: We put a cow ant and a copperhead in a cardboard box for a duel to the death. The cow ant won. The copperhead couldn't strike and hit the ant, but the ant sure as hell could sting the snake.
I've also cut a cow ant in half, and the front half continued to chase people and attempt to sting them. Those things were spawned of Satan.

You probebly have a different kind of paper wasp then we have "we usually just say hornet here", but yeah I've been stung by one of them and they are nasty. I couldn't imagine a velvet then. Also Yellow Jacket stings are pretty painful, but they really aren't nearly as bad a paper wasp "or at least the kind of paper wasp we have in CT".
The main problem with Yellow Jackets is that they're very agressive and wont hesitate to sting you several times if you don't run after the first one. Especially bad if you stumble apon a nest although nests are generally hard to miss considering they're usually swarmed by the buggers. ___________

This is a myth.
A very common one too that is applied to many different species. I've told people it was a myth and had them try to argue with me.
I always heard it applied to what we call the Daddy Long-legs but is more accuratly called the Harvestman. Fact is though, that it isn't even a spider and has no venom glands. ------ wait...what? |

I lived in the semi country side in England till I was 22, Ive been stung by Bee's wasp's and all kinds of other non leathal UK based insects. near had a problem with them, just one of them things
Now Ive moved to Wales, with a colder climate, hence less of the flying little devils and for some odd reason Ive now a got a true mortal fear of wasps, cold sweats, shakes, real terror...
Ive not been stung or hurt by one. it just started one day

most common - fire ants.
they will bite the hell out of ya if you disturb their nest. fortunately theres many ways to kill them, they ain't too bright.
our governer got stuck by a brown recluse and suffered necropsy on his leg, nasty :|. he said he didn't even feel it and didn't notice till hours later.
about 2 months ago i was by someone's porch and felt this incredible feeling of being injected with poison, i look around and theres a wasp nest above me. way more painful than fire ants.

I grew up in country New South Wales, Australia. We had a few types of wasp and hornets. i was lucky in that i was never stung by any. there was also honey bees, which i was actually stung by, ouchy. We also had numerous ants. i tried to find some images, but couldn't find the one we colloquially called the bull ant. it was black and about 15mm long and gave a viscous sting, hurt for a good hour or two. There is a more generally name bull(dog) ant that i have seen in Australia before, but they are closer to 25mm long. Linkage
there was also a smaller ant that stung it had a shiny green bottom, annoying sting but not so bad. they did pop explosively when you took a magnifying glass to them though.
we also had plenty of redback spiders.
but the real worry was always the snakes.
the Australian copperhead was a common local snake. you have to love this quote from the link "their venom is, by Australian standards, only moderately toxic (equal on a per-mg basis to that of the Indian cobra)"
The eastern (common) brown snake was also endemic to where i grew up. This is the listed as the second deadliest snake in the world only surpassed by the inland taipan. The thing is that the inland taipan doesn't bite people, it lives in the desert and there nobody around to bite. the eastern brown on the other hand could be found in my backyard. this snake causes more fatalities than any other snake. Linkage
some good reading on Aussie snakes can be found here Linkage
i guess i should mention that the platypus was a local as well, and the male has venomous spurs although if you went swimming where the platypus were you were more likely to find the leeches (well, they find you actually).

at my cottage, a fair bit of mixed wasps, problem is most of them make nests under the ground (very fluffy, sandy, ground with underbrush that pulls it up) so you cant really walk of the path because more than likely as your walking you get some after you.. was climbing up a rock once and grabbed a root and a bee came out of a next right at my face and stung me on the lip, it was really swollen for a while looked really funny

These are pretty common in former USSR republics. Nasty things... Make very low buzzing noise (like a miniature WWII bomber...), they like to hang around and nest in close proximity to humans just like wasps, only they are fairly aggressive (to the point of having to fight them off if you managed to anger one).
I've never been bitten by one of these, but my grandfather had one bite him in the forehead. Pretty painful and he was sick for while.
