So folks, I've added a new section to QUANT's IGB, I got the idea from a discussion in the starbase forum about random events in EVE and mission distribution.
In-game only (http://www.starvingpoet.net/?IGB=Mission)
Basically, what we are asking EVE's mission-running community to spare a few seconds before every mission to simply paste the mission name and mission type into an IGB window and hit a button :) After time, we hope to have modernize the mission distribution numbers that have existed since pre-RMR.
This is not a site that gives details about missions, as there are other sites out there that simply do it better. This is simple data mining.

and my little in-game FAQ...
What is the Mission Journal?
The mission journal is a pod-pilot data mining project. Anyone that has spent any time doing missions knows that those old mission splits don't seem to be very accurate. The [QTC] Mission Journal is an attempt to gather as much mission data as possible and make it available to pilots throughout the EVE universe. While the developers have never released much information on how missions are distributed, we quants can take this raw data and make some formulas of our own.
How do I Help?
Logging data is a simple two-step process. 1. The first thing you'll need to do is to subscribe to some agents, you can do this by clicking the link directly below this FAQ or by clicking the link above called, surprisingly, 'Agent Subscriptions'. You can add as many agents as you currently run missions for. 2. Once you've 'subscribed' to some agents, come back to this page and you see the ability to log missions below. Simply select the mission type from the drop-down box and copy or type the Mission Name into the textbox and hit submit. You can log as many missions as you want simultaneously, or do one at a time. Make sure to log missions even if you FAIL or DECLINE them. - This is about total mission distribution, regardless of whether you run them or not.
Once you've logged your missions, you can see them reflected on the mission statistics page. Anyone interested in any data dumps, evemail Pwett in-game for details.

Very cool project.
Another possible route you could take with this, is breaking down the rat types by faction. That is, How often X faction gives out missions versus X rat type.

Just joking! I have started adding Minmatar lvl 4 combat missions, 4 or 5 already.
I was going to suggest adding an input for the type of rats as well.
One other input we could give is number of jumps for both courier and combat and if they involve low sec. would be nice to know which agents give out a lot of low sec missions.

Yup, database should be completely fixed now. I was getting lots of duplicate mission names from mispellings so had to recode the way missions were entered.
I'll post this week's numbers after the weekend, but things are looking interesting. We're just approaching 300 logged missions, so thanks to the pilots already participating.
Interesting note, Contralto sent me info that looks like distribution might also differ by level, so I'll see if I can make some more metric graphs and charts over the weekend. I also encourage people to log their storylines, I can filter those out from the 'pure' distribution easily enough. And I'll do my best to add in a faction field in the near future as well.
FYI: if anyone wants to get in touch with me, I have a public channel: [QTC] public where I'm typically idling on one of my alts. _______________ Pwett CEO and Founder [QTC]QUANT Corp.

Edited by: Esaka on 14/09/2007 19:06:08 Heya,
nice tool which hopefully will show the real stats soon or later, i'd like to see a few things added/changed though:
- your "how to help" description says something about selecting the mission type, that isn't possible (anymore?) though - some kind of feedback would be nice that the mission name entered has been parsed as "valid", i know you give feedback if there is an error or it's ambiguous, but for a first time user its good to know that he did everything correct - on the mission journal page please display the last 5(?) missions I've entered, I tend to forget which was the last after running a few ones and recalling myself to feed the tool - after successfully entering a mission please forward to a page that allows to enter the next mission right away
I wasn't also sure whether or not to enter every part of a storyline mission. Given that the next part is forced to be of one type, I would think all but the first part shouldn't be considered for the overall stats? Edit: nvm the last paragraph, after rereading your last post thats what you just said. :p ---------------------------------- Be cool, be important, colorize!!! |

Thanks for the feedback, in reply:
1. Fixed the FAQ, that was the old way of doing it. 2. There should now be some textual feedback once missions have been logged. Either bu mission name, or internal mission ID, depending on which step they were entered. i.e. match on first try, match on drop down box, or new mission creation. 3. Little table with your last 10 missions now shows on the mission journal page. 4. Auto-forwarding pages doesn't always work as planned in the IGB. It's 'safer' to manually move through the links. Besides, it's only one click. _______________ Pwett CEO and Founder [QTC]QUANT Corp.

Excellent, thanks for the quick changes. Especially the list helps me alot.
2. Textual Feedback: Actually I think it was already that way when I started to use it. However I believe you've updated the "How to help" though, which covers the whole process how it works and how errors are handled, that was essentially what was unclear to me when i started. :)
4. "Besides, it's only one click." Well to be honest I hate every extra click I have to do :p and if you're doing batch input it adds up. Wouldn't it be possible to display the journal stuff below the current 'result' page? Or does that create some kind of data submit problem/would be to complex to move the code around? Actually talking about extra clicks, the "-No Mission-"-String seems rather pointless to me and requires an extra click and mouse dragging. ;) How about leaving the field empty and writing something like "Mission-Name:" infront of it?
Those are only fine details of course and no major problems. :) ---------------------------------- Be cool, be important, colorize!!! |

Alright, updated with this week's numbers. Almost 500 missions logged. - not bad seeing as how we had eve server issues and my server died on Friday night.
I also increased the missions logged to 20, just so you have a better feel for when your last storyline was. I also removed storyline missions from the overall stats, but keep logging them, we don't know when we'll need them next.
Multipart missions ARE still counted, this will account for the 1.5% courier in internal security - but I think in terms of absolute missions, it's important that everyone makes sure to log each part of the multiparts.
Otherwise, things are looking good. It would be nice to get some more numbers for our low division counts, and, if anyone happens to run level 1s... to log those as well. _______________ Pwett CEO and Founder [QTC]QUANT Corp.

Just updating with the stats for the last week. with 30 participants and nearly 800 logged missions, I think we're starting to get some respectable numbers. Very nice project!!! Thank you Pwett for that fine and easy-to-use in game website!
The numbers show how urgent such a project and how wrong the old division statistics was! Generally it seems to be the case that the percentage of encounter missions has grown since the time of the old statistics. Most interesting and unexpected for me until now are the divisions "Legal", "Public Relations", "Financial" and "Administration". Could influence some future decisions on new agents.

Some of the inaccuracy in the old numbers is recent--as of Rev1 I think. I don't believe they were ever truly precise, but for a long time they were "accurate enough." * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Great project, ill start using it
One request tho, add a completed option when adding missions, and make an option to list completed missions in mission journal so you can add all missions even if declined/failed and still follow the progress for storyline missions.
Imo the usefullness of follow progress on storyline missions could get even more to post missions
again, keep up the good work

Some missions are recorded wrong in database. At least 'Portal to War (3 of 5)' is recorded as Encounter but is Courier really. Also need some way to erase mission recorded by mistake.

you cant get to 3 without going through 1 (encounter) so its possibly coded from the initial mission of the series.

But when we count mission types' distribution I think we should count it as Courier though.

I like this project -- some interesting confirmations and contradictions of the prevailing wisdom as encapsulated in random bios you meet in the cluster.
Here's a request, a suggestion, and a question:
Request: Include 20 or 25 top-contributing pod pilots instead of just 10.
Suggestion: After each patch, archive the previous results in an accessible link, and restart the data gathering. If they tweak the percentages, we could see it happening more easily this way.
Question: The consensus seems to be that quality of agent has no effect on difficulty of mission. However, going from a low-quality agent to a high-quality agent in the same corp and division most recently I seem to have gotten missions that I didn't see from the lower-quality one. That's anecdotal, though. Can you see any trends in the raw data?
