I have never played the MMOG Jumpgate, but does it have anything to teach CCP? Should Eve Online copy aspects of Jumpgate?
Jumpgates' developers have been interviewed about the future of their game for those who are interested:

If Eve had the same physics model as JumpGate. 98% of all pilots in eve would die trying to dock into a station. In JumpGate you hit a station >100m/s you die ,you hit a asteriod >100m/s you die,you hit a gate >100m/s you die, you hit another larger ship >100m/s you die. In JumpGate you have to fly the ship and aim the guns with the ship. Plus with all the pilots in space (Jita??) the servers would crash with the calculations.

So true. I lost more ships trying to dock in that game than in combat.
I played Jumpgate for a few months before joining eve, it was fun and a lot like Freelancer online. The graphics were poor at the time, I doubt it's been updated.

I would not want my ship to crash! I would expect the on board computer to navigate a safe path.
I think the priority for CCP's computer is to manage big battles rather than Newtonian physics!

Jumpgate... ah, the memories of docking a tow full of Plutonium in Solrain station. I liked it - a shame it had so few players and that CrapDevil sort of stopped supporting it to develop that crappy car crashing game.

Edited by: Karash Amerius on 07/09/2007 17:02:27 Having played the original Jumpgate for years before moving into Eve, I can tell you that JG and EVE are two totally different games. In Jumpgate its all about your own personal skill (joystick, or HOTAS setup, etc). Eve is tactical and decision oriented.
If any other former JG players want to get in on the discussion of Jumpgate Evolution, I suggest you go register at http://joystickrequired.com/forums.

On the positive side of things, we could egg stations with our pods.

I take it is a "give email adress and wait to be contacted beta" instead of a beta where first come first served?

Jumpgate was fun for a few months when it came out, but after that they hired a horrible customer relations team and basically stopped supporting it.
The flight-sim in space is quite cool (and I hope to try out their new beta) but it's even more of a niche market than EVE.
The only thing that EVE could possibly take from Jumpgate would be player controlled fighters with flight-sim controls and I don't ever see that happening (awesome as it would be). Instead we get walking in stations--sadly.
Part of me does miss MatCon farming, dive bombing, and whining about overpowered intensities though.

It probably would never fit into EVE, I agree, but I do sometimes wish I could fly my frigates manually. And bouncing off of something after having accelerated to well over several kilometers per second always causes my could-be-real-o-meter to make an odd sort of groaning sound.
By the way, since we're speaking of Jumpgate[s], we need better effects, CCP! That bubble gate in one of the first screenies makes my mouth water profusely.

Ahh, Jumpgate. Such nice Memorys. It was my first MMOG. I started playing in the open EU Beta and continiued playing 1 year into retail(alltogether I spend around 1,5 - 2 Years on that game). That game really was a blast. I allways played as Octavian, those Red and Black Coloring of the Ships had something stealthy looking to it, wich I really loved(though I knew the Abilities of the opposing ships pretty well, as I was using them extensively in the Sim. Getting to know the enemy and all that). Even the early nervs to the Phoenix didn't draw me away. I loved the power that Ship had, the Dual Hitman + Barrak Combo was something most Pilots feared. Though the "Chaingun" variation with 4 barraks that I used after the nerf also rocked(lowend Cap+4barraks= Endless Stream of bullets and a constantly flashing shield for your target ). Can't wait for the Jumpgate Evo beta to start.

Short answer> NO
Good game though, if only becuase I'm old skool and still have a Sidewinder FF laying about. I played JG for a good few months when it first came out, so I'm looking forward to the Evol update, for sure.
The devs behond Neocron are making a space MMO, which should be interesting.
Single-player EVE = Nexus
Oh yes, and shouldn't this be in OOG

The devs I think you're referring to could be 10tacle Studios AG, and the game Black Prophecy.
The problem with that game is it will have a 300 ship limit to fleet warfare. I think Eve's got more potential in this area (if the lag gets sorted out! )
Also, I doubt Black Prophecy could better Eve's economy, but you never know.

I played JG when I waited for invitation to EVE beta. JG was fun for old 8bit players and good memory for Elite and Frontier.
I am still waiting if we will get soon to EVE some good ideas from JG :) We already got a lot of them, but weather aka enviromental dmg we have only in missions :)
Also adrenalin sport was to hunt or to be hunted by Flux, which used sometimes also gates :)

Edited by: Aldee on 07/09/2007 23:57:24 Comparing EVE to Jumpgate is like apples and oranges. I played both JG and EVE in beta and live and they were nothing alike. My whole old AQM crew started on JG and a few of them moved to EVE.
Original JG was too small and it was more of 1st person shooter meets spaceships. I enjoyed Jumpgate physics alot more then EVE cause it made you know how to fly a ship more but EVE had a much bigger vision for their universe and didnt let it die like orginal JG devs did (minus the like 2 hard core devs at netdevil that tried to support a dying universe and didnt get messed up with a silly game like auto assault ).
Most of my old AQM group didnt like EVE and a few stayed in JG up to this last yr when you could only find like 5 ppl on the server at any given time. I have hopes the new JG will compare to when JG 1st came out so best to wait and see.
(BTW one of my old JG mates after playing EVE called it "space accountants")
{edit} only thing JG can teach EVE is..... support its game and players or they all leave you with a server thats peak rate is about 6 ppl online at max )

Zap, if you know Nexus, then i presume you know Imperium Galactica?
IG2 was the best strategy/comabt sim i played for ages. the transition to the battle screen made for so much fun. i remember taking down a 55k firepower fleet with my 3k firepower cloaked heavy corvette. benny hill with torpedoes, anyone? =D
anyway, Nexus was poorer than Haegemonia...they should have just kept them as Imperium Galactica III rather than splitting the strategy and combat to different games ='(

Jumpgate, my very first MMO
I remember getting into EVE beta and detesting it utterly, took two years to try it again
^^ EVE is kinda accountants in space, its a space sim with lots of clicky for movement.
A decently produced and backed space fps should be popular, but as with Jumpgate, would it have longevity...thats why space accountants is still going strong
Many JG ppl came to EVE and there are still JG corps/alliances going strong.
Sadly, the european jumpgate was rife with cheating

Starport is fun, have missions and economy system, with planets to colonize, conquer and defend. Turn based. It's ugly 2D graphics though.

IG was much fun. IG2 took the planetary interaction a touch too far for my liking, although I had a lot of fun playing it. Haegemonia was good - it mixed up the "hero" aspect of the original IG with some fun ship combat, but I think IG3/Nexus was the closest to a single-player EVE.
As for the new space MMOs on the way, I hope they are good so that they keep CCP on their toes. I heard a rumour a couple of years back that Chris Roberts (WingCo) was working at NCSoft... if true, that should result in some interesting stuff...

Playing the game (joystick flight) is bad as to playing a user interface? A lot of ppl love the realistic flight modes of old space games. Heck i dream of playing privateer MMO.
As for server crashes with 400 players.. only Eve servers do that. Seriously get some better network codes going, failure to handle a few hundred players makes a MMO into "somewhat-MMO".

The Joystick flight isn't really what he is quite referring to. It was the much more Simulation nature of Jumpgate.

I Feel that the closest thing to EVE singal player would have to be Escape Velocity NOVA, a mac game. not on PC.
I mean, just look at the map compared to EVE - EV NOVA MAP
If I can do it, so can you! If you choose not to, your fault, not mine! Stop Spamming the T1 Nerf Torp CCP. Invent a T2 boost Torp and use it! Balance is Important, EVE still being fun, Priceles |
