I would like to do some reading up on salvaging (Not just the looting of wrecks, but actually salvaging more from a wreck after it is looted).
Anyone know some good threads/walkthroughs that are available?

There is not much to say:
1) Train Salvaging skill (level 3 is required for some of the "hi-tech" wrecks) 2) Fit Salvaging module 3) Target wreck (doesn't matter if it has been looted or not / doesn't matter if it is yours or not: no flagging for salvaging) 4) Activate Salvager 5a) See stuff appear in your cargo hold, or 5b) See message about there being nothing to salvage, or 5c) See message about needing to try again
That's about all there is too it.

Train tractor beams so you can target and pull wrecks from 20k away saving you plenty of travel time.
Personally i'd use a destroyer for salvage with 6xsalvager and 2xtractor beams.
Remember is you use a ship for salvage dedicate it to salvage, you won't needs gun or shields as you are cleaning up after combat. -----------------------------------------------

A destroyer with a mix of tractor beams and salvagers is a great salvage ship.
Add salvage rigs to make it faster still.
Personally I salvage in an Armageddon - it's called "Conspicuous Consumption"
I really, really, really want Medium and Large tractor beams in game.

Thanks for the responses. I was worried at first as I did not see anything before I shut down last night.
I assume each wreck has a fixed amount of "something" to be salvaged, so kind of like mining, more salvagers just means you get everything that you possible could more quickly?
Or is it just one salvager per wreck?

Correct. The ammount of stuff that you will get is fixed. Your skills increase the chance that you will get what the wreck has in any single attempt. Using multiple salvagers increases speed, because it is less likely that both (all) will fail.

If I may jump on the bandwagon, I have another question about salvaging:
Does decay play a factor in salvaging?
Reason I ask, is that as a poor Minmatar all I can afford is a friggite. So for some of those missions, I cannot afford to loose one canon for a salvager. So my plan is to do the mission, run back to the station and swap a canon for a salvager and rush back to salvage the wrecks.
Would that be an option or just a waste of time?

The wrecks survive 2 hours after creations, so you should have the time you need.
You can bookmark the wrecks, deliver the mission (so you get the bonus) and return to the spot.
The warpgates and the scenery will disappear, but wrecks and loot will remain.

Thanks for the insight. One more quetion, if I may:
What are those items we salvage good for? I was under the impression we would get regular equipment that we could fit into our ships, but instead I got some wierd items that I have never seen before. Are those used in inventions or something?

they are used as materials for building rigs aka "ship modifications"

Timely question, as I just began salvaging last night.
I did a rather sloppy cost/benefit thing and here is what I came up with (Disclaimer: This is based on casual shopping and selling--I did NOT shop around for the best prices when I bought stuff nor when sold the salvaged items). If I had done so my benefits would have increased, but then again so would have the time taken to gain those benefits. In addition, prices will vary by time and location (I am in Lonetrek)):
For me, the costs of: caldari destroyer, afterburner, 4 salvagers, cargo bay extension, ship insurance, and salvaging training skill totalled up to a little over 2 million ISK.
I then did a Level one mission in my trust Merlin. When the "space smoke" had settled, I brought my brand-spanking-new destroy to scrounge for pieces.
For me, the financial benefits from: the reward for completing the mission, the bonus time reward, the bounties of the rats I killed, the cargo I was able to pull from the wrecks and the fried components I was able to salvage totalled up to approximately 0.9 million ISK.
In that last mission I was able to salvage ONE component that I sold for 600K ISK. Without that little piece of luck my efforts would have been significantly less profitable.
So......using the above experience as a rough guide, in running three such missions/salvages I would expect to more than pay for the expense of setting myself up to salvage.
A few comments: I did not have tractor beams (they were too expensive), and while salvaging was slow, the afterburners brought my speed to over 400. In lieu of the tractor beams I have two railguns. Although I have set up this ship for salvaging purposes only, it is nice to know I can marginally defend myself against stray rats until I can warp out.
The "playability" of this was fun. One gets the "action" of the mission itself (using one's combat vessel), and on the back-end one can get some decent loot in relatively short amount of time by scooping up the debris in the salvaging destroyer.

Could you maybe point me to a guide for that. My character is somewhat of scavanger and it would really be in character for him to do build stuff like that. (in my bio I have it that my character escaped life of slavery from the Amar by building a ship out of scrap, ducktape and lots of bubble gum).

I dont know of any guide which covers salvage/rig building as a speciality, but there are plenty of industrial guides floating about, here is a good place to start.
Note: and you REALLY want tractors on your salvaging ship, no speed will make up for having 5 wrekcs come to your salvagers, while you fly towards a 6th wreck.
Otherwise outsource the job to Janitors Hub, althogh I dont think they do level 1/2 missions.

An epilogue to my last post, specifically regarding my non-use of tractor beams. Tractor beams are TOTALLY worth the cost. Last evening I took the plunge and invested the 1.2m ISK in a tractor beam (yes, I am THAT poor, 1.2 million ISKs is a lot of icelandic dough!)
I was able to tractor beam one wreck to me, while I simultaneously salvaged the ones that were closer.
If you are gonna salvage, dont skimp on the tractor beam--you will be glad you did!

My problem is not buying the beam or the skill (thought the last can run you a pretty penny). My big issue with getting one now is where to slot the darn thing.
Right now I am flying a Rifter and usually have a burst parked in a hangar a few jumps away. The Rifter has 3 turret slots, so I take one for the salvager. That leaves me with 2 guns and my torpedos. I am somewhat squeemish of giving up yet another one of my guns right now. If it's at the end of a mission I would probably go for it, but I don't want to be flying around with just 1 gun and one missile launcher. Not even going to consider the Burst, because then I would be flying with no guns at all
Maybe once I get myself a destroyer with 7 turret hard points, I'll consider it. As for now, I'll just putter along from wreck to wreck and keep those guns loaded.

I just have to pop in and let you guys who are worried about not having guns on your ship know that if you finish off the mission and go back to your bookmarked wreck there will never be rats there, so no need to flt guns, tractors and salvagers all the way is safe. -=^=-

I actually loot and salvage with no weapons as well. What I do is simple, do my mission in my BC and bookmark one wreck per room, finish the mission and turn it in for the time bonus. Get in my destroyer which is parked in my mission hub and fly back out to loot.
I mount 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers in my high slots. I have a afterburner in my mid and a cargo expander in my single low slot. The rest of my mids are filled with cap mods so I can do all the looting without running dry.
Doing this I get anywhere from 1-5m isk loot and salvage per mission. Anything I can't sell for a decent price I melt down and sell the minerals. I was able to pay for the ship and fittings in a couple missions, since then it has been all profit.

It's not the missions I'm concerned about. There are lots of times where I do a mission, swap to my Burst that has 2 mining lasers and go back and mine till my hearts content. What worries me is ratting and other players who might just want to shoot me down in mid level zones.

If you're in lowsec, odds are that lone gun will not save you from other players who are looking for a fight. Your best defense against them is to complete your task as quickly as possible, and stripping your ship of weaponry in order to increase your salvage/loot speed is far more likely to save your butt than the one autocannon you kept on your ship.
Off hand, if you are running missions and looting in lowsec, good for you! Little bit of excitement to add to an otherwise run-of-the-mill profession. --- Wherever you go, there you are. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24,000 bytes - Tallan ([email protected]) |
