So I talked about this in another thread for a bit, but after several requests for some kind of map that does take in to account power blocs I've been working on a new map that does this. The rules are fundamentally the same, but every alliance and its holdings are now put in to one of 4 groups: The Alliance, the S. Coalition, the N. Coalition, or the Free Agents. The map as a result shows the influence of the power blocs as a whole, while ignoring individual alliances.
It's still an early product that needs some more work, but you can see the first results on the blocmaptest. Please let me know what you think so that I can improve it. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map: Keeping Down The Clone Business Since 2007AD |

They also show up as neutral to many in the Coalition I think. So, they would be Free Agents yes?
The IAC-FIX conflict is largely an extension of the Great War, with IAC being allied with the Southern Coalition. I don't see any reason to make them Free Agents.
D-L is a free agent? How'd they end up with sovereignty in BoB space?
Invictus has been working with Southern Coalition forces against BoB and BoB's allies, so I'm going to assume that they would fit more in the SOuthern Coalition category rather than the Free Agents category.

Who's in which group can be easily changed, I'm not working on or worried about that right now; this is just a quick dump from Josh's list. I'm looking for feedback more along the lines of if this this map is useful, easy to read, etc. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map: Keeping Down The Clone Business Since 2007AD |

Ah okay. Well, visually speaking, it doesn't look as neat. It's awesome for influence of individual alliances and stuff, but when you make one color for a huge blob of alliances together, it doesn't look particularly appetizing. It's like seeing three or four slugs wrapping around each other. The other map that already has powerblocs is visually more appealing for the purpose of showing powerblocs, but the information is usually incorrect in that map. Which is why the Influence map is so much better, but it doesn't look right when there are only four colors like that. It's just a visual nit I like to pick perhaps.
Edit: Actually, I think a big reason for my distaste with the visuals is that the colors are solid. In the other map they are transparent except at the borders. More futuristic and hurts the eyes less. But I don't think you can make that happen with this map, so I don't suppose I'm helping.

Erm, well, I was sorta hoping you'd make them less solid to be honest. Right now, they are so solid that it looks like something a dirty hippie would have plastered on their T-shirt. I'd prefer more transparency so the color itself stands out less against the background, while each color remains distinctive from each other.

Yeah, because all the different alliances have been turned into a couple big blobs, the overlaping influence is really overpowering. Maybe turn down the influence generated by each system by 50% or so for this specific map.
As far as the power blocs go, perhaps it would be useful to actually still show some semblance of the individual alliances involved. Like, leave BoB seperate from its allies in the BoB blue. Then instead of different colours for its allies, make them a different shade of blue, but maintain thier names on the map. The exact locations of thier allies territory isn't such a big deal, as the normal influence map is still there to double check.
Keeping all the alliance names from the influence map would really help get more information across though.

Also, Serenity Steele of EVE Strategic Maps / Outpost Alert has hooked me up with a way to pull the OA data. If you have any new outposts, please let OA know and my map will show it automatically.

Edited by: Azzerhoden on 03/09/2007 19:23:25 Can you change the color for Intrepid Crossing? It is currently the same color given to the Imperial Order and close to the color of Frege. Perhaps a nice purple since that doesn't appear to be used in the drone regions?
Also, can you move the name down just a bit?
Thanks!
EDIT--- My bad, IRON is purple. Still, the map shows some distance between us so it may be ok.

Edited by: cal nereus on 04/09/2007 03:30:23 The bloc map still doesn't look too good. You may want to consider redividing up the blocs into its constituent alliances, with the only change being that their colors are coordinated. IE: all the blue-hues would be BoB and its allies, all the red-hues would be RedSwarmFederation and friends, etc. The colors would need to be slightly different, but similar to tell that they are part of the same bloc. And I would prefer it if the borders were highlighted, to take focus away from the systems and towards the borders. Only for the bloc map of course. In an influence map, the opposite is preferable.
Edit: That aside, I'm really happy that you're working on this. And yay, vacation-proof map!

Eh, good enough for me. I'll see if I can find you a new color in the next day or so, but the selection is rather limited in the drone regions. I personally rather like your color and where it is, so I'm not sure what I'll do, I don't want to reduce color variety any more.
If you really want a color change, come up with something you think would work and send me the RGB values. If it turns out looking good I'll use it. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map: Keeping Down The Clone Business Since 2007AD |

Verite,
Another great product! Here are some comments...
- Leave the names of the alliances on the map, not just the names of the blocs. But it might be cleaner to put it in a list like josh does.
- Use red, blue, green, yellow for distinction
- "Free Agents" is not fitting. Perhaps just a simple "Neutral" will do.
One request I had was if there was any way for you to add a marker for hot systems. Maybe use the mark of over 200 kills in 24 hour period. This way we can see where the battles are occuring. -----------------------------------------------

How about the follow? Red 0 Green 192 Blue 0 Hue 85 Sat 255 Light 96
As for placement of our name, just below the 'Int' is a system. Can the name be moved so that this system is just above the 'Int'?
Thanks in advance, and I love this map!

That's awfully close to Project Entropy's color, but I think I'll let that slide. As for the name position, that's all automatic. There's not really anything I can do about the placement.
Borg017: I'll check out some of your suggestions the next time I have some free time to work on that map. As for the activity markers, I don't consider that consistent with the influence map. Not sure "neutral" is terribly fitting either. Tri has been anything but neutral in blasting the BoB pets in the north, but don't consider themselves part of the Coalition (they shoot them too). Neutral implies they're not getting involved. ------

I have a little bit, but that's a significant pain in the butt because each color needs to be programmed in manually; this is supposed to be a fully automated map, and having to manually program in the blocs is already bad enough as far as that's concerned. Not nessesarily. How are you manually putting in the blocs now?
If you have a list of them or whatever, then you can simply save the power bloc leader's colors. Lets just say for instance, BoB and RA. Then when you load the alliances, check the list to see which bloc they are in and set the colour there to the same as the bloc leader, which you've saved as a couple variables. This would be instead of setting thier colour to the output of the resultset from the DB query under the //load alliances part of the code.
If you want to vary the colours slightly, then just for each block reduce the intensity a bit for each one. Don't think it would be too hard to do it.
