Hi,
one short question? Where can I grab the coordinates of the solarsystems? The sql-script in the source provided some coords, but where are they from?
I hope this is in topic.

Funny how biased the creator of this map is . When XIX had 1 station in Tenerifis they were shown as a small blob on the map in Tenerifis. Bob has controlled 2 stations in Querious for some time now and a few weeks ago GBC controlled almost half of the systems in Querious but nothing there. Also with Atlas controlling almost all the Detorid stations goons/RA are shown as the owners.

sov 4 hogs allot of influence and in a week or 2 atlas will show up as a little blob in the detorid region on the influence map. |

Come on, you can't really be that dumb. Do you honestly think someone would sit and make those colors instead of using an automatic script that makes the colors based on what the Map API key output is? |

Edited by: Andrevv on 10/06/2009 18:15:31 Edited by: Andrevv on 10/06/2009 18:14:06 Here is how the influence at any given point is calculated,
Systems Base Projected Influence = 10*(6 If it has a station)*(1|1.2|1.5|2 For Sov level)*(1.5 If its owner is the owner of the constellation)*(0.3)
This is the base influence of any given solar system.
A systems sphere of influence is projected outward by 4 gate jumps (5 if a station is present) in all directions.
So every Solarsystem has a set of influences from all the surrounding solarsystems attached to it.
Here's where it gets complicated,
The influence on any given point is a sample of an 800x800px square surrounding that point, of every solar system in that square.
With a pixel being scaled from AU's by 4.8445284569785E17/((IMAGE_HEIGHT - 20) / 2.0).
Each Solar system adds all its influences to the point scaled down by how far away it is squared, (Influence / (INSENSITIVITY + length^2)). INSENSITIVITY being arbitrarily chosen as 500, for reasons that no one will ever know.
The alliance with the highest influence at the point is the colour that gets drawn.
And that is what happens for every point on the map. You may or may not have noticed that this system of using gate jumps for the first part and AU's for the second will unevenly distribute influence across constellation jumps, especially the longer ones. This is true, however last time it was worked on, it was decided to keep it the way it is because people are used to it.
P.S. Verite,
graphicsManager.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING, RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON);
Add this when you initialize the graphics2D object and see if it makes any difference. I should make it look better... Or fail miserably.

My apologies. I did not see this yesterday otherwise I would have responded to it sooner.
Anyhow, as mentioned on the front page, the map is entirely automated. For whatever biases I may have, it's not possible for me to directly alter certain aspects of the map without outright falsifying sovereignty data or significantly altering the drawing algorithm. It goes without saying that I don't do this, because it would be a lousy map if I was messing with it. The entire purpose is to be a best-guess objective map.
The results of what you see is the same fundamental algorithm that this map has used since I inherited it in 2007. I've added new features over the years, but the method of determining influence is unchanged. So if there's an inaccuracy with the map it's not through me fudging with the map, but rather because the entire algorithm is a best-guess effort. Andrevv has already listed an overview of how all of this is calculated, and the source code is available if you'd like to see how it works in depth.
Thus far I am happy with the results the map program generates. However I consider this a community effort, so by no means is anything absolutely final. If you believe a specific change will improve the map, I'm all ears.
PS Andrevv, thanks for the hint. I'll take a look at it when I get the chance |

Suggestion : make an alternative version of the map that is more focussed on system occupation and less on influence ? So that situations mentioned by Crucifier would be visible in at least that other map. If the algorithms are only best-guess (and I understand why they are like that), then it would make sense to me to run several algorithms at the same time to produce different maps. That way you'll cover more subjects that people would like to see.
I had a quick look at the source code, and maybe I'll try it out this summer myself, but it would probably look 90% like the influence map anyway.

The problem is that if you start showing tiny ickle changes all over the map like that then you will be getting name tags appearing all over the place making it look very messy .. How about keeping this one as it is but doing "regional" ones with more detail?
The Sov 4 claiming infulence is a good thing IMO because it is a hard nut to crack and important for the occupier. ---

Seems to be a bug with the uploading. Twice the map was of correct date, but the next day this one gets back and stays that way until it manually gets corrected again.

I think Verite has done a pretty decent job with the Map, but then again I know the guy and am a little biased. I think the regional maps would be freakin' sweet though. Maybe I can pester Verite until he has some free time to look into it.

Is there a map that shows the power blocs? As the influence map does not give a good picture of where the influence is really at. |

Yeah yeah, I'm up to my neck in Solar Fleet, so things just might be a bit busy.
Anyhow, in no specific order:
1) I'm currently satisfied with how the map determines influence. I could try a version of the map with a weaker base influence, but I suspect it would accomplish little more than generating a bunch of "pet blobs" in most cases, where pets like AAA Citizens show influence when in reality they have none. It may be more technically correct, but if it makes the map less readable, I'm not sure it's worth it.
2) For regional maps, it's a lot of work to edit the program to do those kinds of maps. I have to create solar system and jump tables for each region, and run a different version of the map-generating app for each because each region would need a different scaling factor and x/y adjustment. It's possible, but for the work I don't see the benefit. If you're looking at a specific region, then you probably want more information than this kind of map can provide, such as sov levels. In which case maps like Dotlan's are likely a better fit.
But it's all open source, if someone wants to take a whack at it, everything they need is there.
3) If you ever have a problem with the map, post the exact URL of the image file. Chribba has been having issues with the mirrors going out of sync, so I would need to know what mirrored server the faulty image is on so that I can ask him to fix it.
4) I once floated a power bloc map (basically an influence map with various bloc members all issued shades of a primary color). The biggest issue is that I don't want to be the one drawing up the power blocs, it's a decidedly non-neutral job. No one was interested in taking up the job of determining the blocs. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |
