I put a little poll on my website (on right-hand strip) which asks which MMO people have come over to Eve from. -

Shame on you! At least include some of the science fiction based MMORPG's by name, especially that one other space based MMORPG that was effectively killed by its publisher (Earth & Beyond). I suspect a lot of the longer time gamers who are in EVE have either heard of it, have switched over to EVE while it was running or sought refuge in EVE once it was shut down.

Here are the most important ones:
- Anarchy online
- Neocron
- Earth & Beyond
- Jumpgate
- Planetside(well, it's scifi themed. The technology is actually around Vietnam war era for the most part)

Edited by: Mos Superum on 18/07/2007 13:15:26 I'm coming from Real Life(tm). I was a level 70 overweight husband in a family guild. I usually tanked for the level 64 nagging wife and her elite build greyhound pet. I still play the game, but I'm now into EVE. I usually get bugged by my old guildmate to get off EVE and come back to assist with grinding on end-game chores and epic-level home maintenance. She wanted to do a 2-man movie night raid the other night, as we'd just aquired a new NetFlix soulstone, so I had to set a skill training in EVE and go help aggro the DVD player.
What really sucks about the pets in Real Life(tm) is that their handlers, like the level 64 nagging wife in my guild, can link them to you and require you to manage them. That stupid pet bugs me all the time and gets me killed in EVE, usually when it has to go outside or wants to be fed. My guildmate usually links her pet when she's AFK in the crapper.
Honestly, I'm training level 70 locksmith skills now to hopefully change out the locks in my guild office so I can have some privacy.

Played SWG for the last 3 years or so, and enjoyed the space part quit a bit, however most of the new changes blow over there so I thought I'd give this one a try.

heh thanks Shanur. I tried to update the poll but the Blogger doesn't allow the options to be changed after votes have started. I might have it expire early and then do another one with scifi MMOs, too. |

Good stuff.
I myself haven't really played any MMO's before, aside from some Planetside a few years back when it first came out. Was quite addicted to it for awhile, but it lost it's appeal after a time. Taking over the same buildings/bases/continents over and over eventually became old-hat.
I would honestly play it again, if I could convince my gaming buddies to pick it up with me. Though I'm not sure the player base is very large anymore.

First MMO for me was Final Fantasy XI, played that for a while then moved onto EVE. After playing EVE for a while, I decided to try out that WoW game everyone was playing.
But then I came back to EVE, for obvious reasons.

Went to EVE after EnB announced closure, stayed here for around 2 years, saw some amazing things, flew with the best Fleet commanders at the time. Unfortunatly i sold my account, which is byfar the worst mistake ever made.
Left and went to WoW, played that for about 2 years.
Now im trying to come back to EvE, but it seems Vista and EVE dont mix very well. so i might be stuck with no games what so ever.

Actually, this is my first MMO, but I really played it because I missed being in space. The "Space game" for me was Freespace 2, but I've not heard hide nor hair about any sequels. I came across eve looking for a space joyride. "Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes" |

A lot of us came here from there. Ascendant Frontier's founding Corp were E&B refugees who moved over together. Vista and Eve are no worse than XP and Eve for glitches, check the 'Known Issues' Forum for tips. Obvious ones are: Turn off Aero. Increase Graphics Card performance. Run as Administrator (in Eve exe Properties)

I guess you could call me an MMO addict. I've come from a bunch of them.
1994-1995 Various MUDs 1995-1998 SubSpace 1996-1996 Meridian 95 1997-1999 UO (Finish your duping and lets go kill some RPers, Plate d00d!!) 1999-2003 Everquest (hey, PvE raiding can be competitive in a meaningful way) 2001-2001 Anarchy Online (Worst release problems ever. Think I'll stay with EQ) 2003-2003 Lineage 2 (decent PvP mechanics, but burnt out on the god awful grind) 2003-2003 DAOC (great roaming group v group PvP, but low pop servers make me sad) 2003-2004 Shadowbane (Where did everyone go? Come build another tree.. please?) 2004-2006 WoW (Had enough PvE raiding in EQ, so WoW wasn't for me. Learned to hate instancing) 2005-2007 GuildWars (Good fast meaningless fun, like an FPS. Still hate instancing)
2007-Present EvE (Death penalties, yay! PvP, yay! Looting, yay! No instancing, yay! Still a total EvE noob, but this game reminds me of the good old UO days)

May 2004 - June 2005: EVE June 2005 - April 2007: WOW April 2007 - Current: EVE
Sadly I gave my characters away when I quit EVE in 2005, worst mistake of my life (I don't know who has them now and they are never online to ask nicely for them back)
WOW was fun until I decided to start levelling another class, 3 or 4 months of grinding the same crappy monsters and zones just so you can play the game is so offputting.
The EVE "levelling" system is the best I've experienced.

A very long time ago (like, uh 17 years or so) I played Neverwinter Nights when it was a multiplayer game hosted on (IIRC) AOL. Gave it up when I realized that fighters got no respect. Or ability to kill dam' weenie mages.
I tried EQ a few years back for about two weeks. I still ain't sure why anybody plays it.
What did hold my attention for many (7+) years was the Team Fortress mods for Quake I, II & III. Loved that game to pieces, enjoyed Clan play and leagues hugely.
EVE has turned out to be nicely addicting. I can try to kill anything, anything can try to kill me, if I so desire. I've only completed a year and a bit of my fiendish multi year plan to eventually rule Fountain but I'll get there....

Two words that made me appreciate instancing in games that aren't player regulated trough freeform PvP (IMO a prerequisite for shared resources or you'll have no way to get rid of that camper on YOUR spawn): Zordak Ragefire (Mk II. The timered version in Skyfire).

Been multiplayer internet gaming since 1994.
But EVE is the first one with the pretty pictures and whatnot that I've paid for. (Achaea got some money from me - very complex PVP, albeit text-only.)

Do other DirectX games run OK? Beyond that, try asking on the Forum listing your System details. Oriella was a TT on Galileo, lived at Paren station.
