Wouldn't it make sense, that the more you mined a 'roid the smaller it would get? Quite annoying when a 'roid that's 20 times the size of your ship stays that size for loads of cycles, then suddenly pops.

Miners work from the inside out, so after loads of cycles you have an empty roid with only a thin outside left

Cause its fun to go to a belt and mine all but a few bits of the ore in each asteroid. Then wait for a buffed out miner to come in his Hulk. Point his uber mining lazers at the 'roid. Then after 3 mins he get 20 units of ore.
oooo, local does get very blue sometimes.

err, anyhow.. deep in my twisted long ago past, I am certain I remember seeing Asteroids shrink, but ir was half random and seemed broken, disappeared after a patch. (might just be insane, your milage on my memory will vary)
reason we dont see it could simply be that updating the server on the size and forcing the client to redraw it would be too cycle-hungry.
think of lag if every rock in the belt (not just the ones you could easily see) but every rock in the mining op was redrawing/updating every minute? cycle?
edit: its probably on some list on a whiteboard deep in secret CCP offices.. unfortunatly its scheduled after amarr boost And planetary interaction.
and banana, hun.. have you considered a more constructive hobby? building ships in bottles, collecting rubber-bands?

AFAIK, Roids do shrink, but not constantly, and not visably to the mining player.
Probably along the lines of skill training/Researching ME, once you warp in, the server sends you data on how big the roids are. Instead of constantly updating, which is just a lot more info for the server to handle, x beslts, in y number of systems, constantly being updated, it just notes the changes, then adjusts them for the next player to warp in.
To test this, mine down an untouched belt, but don;t pop any roids. Then, warp to a statin, and warp back. The roids have probably gone from Huge, to very small, cause they have little ore.

When you have mined out the 'roid you get a message that it's empty and crumbles so it becomes hollow from mining... ---

Asteroids have never shrunk with mining, I think.
Still though, that would be really, really handy. We've all seen the Veldspar asteroids the size of planets (or, well, we did. I think they've all gone the way of the dodo by now). It was quite ridiculous when those things had about, what, 5 units of veldspar left?
Anyway, could we get this changed with the graphics update? Just make the client display the circumference and size of the asteroid based on remaining content of it. If nothing else, it would add further quiet satisfaction to slowly mining out a gigantic asteroid.

I'm not a miner, but some eye candy for depleted 'roids would be cool, perhaps similar to the effect on ships / objects when they explode..but without the explosion (unless you're mining with explosives of course!), so that when an asteroid is ready to pop, it won't just blink out of existence.

Water is a special case. While we take its properties for granted, they are contrary to the norm.
Also, asteroids do shrink at downtime AFAIK. If you took a giant veldspar roid and mined it down to a few units, after downtime it should be tiny sized.

You don't use the ore scanner to pre-select roids to devour? I like the large, empty roids ... they add a margin of safety to mining if you park on the farside of the roid field. ---------------- Mutatis Mutandis |
