....while alot of you weren't even born, I used to spend hours playing Elite. It was Eve, but not online, as there wasn't really an online to speak of Can you even begin to imagine that?
Anyway, if you want to know what us old timers used to get up to, and where Eve originated, check out this site.

Yup, the Elite games rocked my world back in the day... Can't even begin to count the amount of hours I lost to that game. Makes Eve look like a simple hobby :P

Nothing better than waiting 20 minutes in orbit for your hit to undock, then frabtically engaging and completing the hit, before he could leave.
Amiga version was so much better than the PC version mind... thats why i dont play it anymore.

I remember playing Elite on the old Sinclar Spectrum.
It used some strange form of copy protection in the form of a lens you have to align with the TV monitor in order to read the short access code.
It was a pain in the arse but the game was that good (for its day) that one simply put up with it.
Backing up the game was always risky and I used to make 3 copies onto my old cassete recorder. I lost 2 months game play thanks to a tape wreck.
The first thing you had to buy was a docking computer, saved lots of time.
Thanks to Elite I didn't do as well as I should of done in my exams, a problem I fear many Eve players are repeating.
I think I still got the specy and game in the loft somewhere. Oh, the good old days. The young pups of today have it way to easy.

Elite was fantastic, but seriously, think about the kids who grow up today and Eve is their elite. Makes me very yellous. ---

I just thank god that the stations dont rotate in EVE and that theres a auto-dock. I could never get the hang of docking in Elite.

Anyone remember playing Escape Velocity? The day I started playing EVE brought back so many memories. I'm sure someone on the DEV team played the EV series, there are so many similarities. EV:Nova is still great, the story(ies) rock. Download the trial version, seriously, it's great fun.

Elite on the Commodore 64 here. The lens device that you had to use to read the code and enter the game worked like crap on a color TV screen. Nothing like a bit of hair tearing to sharpen your flying skills.
I still think we should have to manually dock in Eve.

First time I installed EVE I was thinking, 'I hope it's easier to dock in this game than it was in Elite!'.

Sinclair Spectrum player here. What a brilliant game that was. Still seriously impresses me to realize what they could do with so little to work with in terms of computing power and memory available. Absolutely brilliant!

BBC version was the original and best though.
The co-processor version, played with a 65C102 co-processor (approx 50% faster, and never any frame rate lag - ever) was the best. I had to use a co-pilot at that speed (my dad :))
Anyone ever farmed an anaconda, for the worm kills? Or better, farmed a space station for the police kills (yarr!) Since stations were indestructable, I had to use the flying towards/away 'bug' (you fly towards things faster than you fly away from them) to claim a moral victory, by flying between the planet and station until the station was so far from teh planet that the planet dissapeared.

I'll second that, after a few days of squinting through the lens and looking up the code, I hacked the prog so the code was the same each time (edited the loader program so it reset the internal clock before executing the program after loading).
I never made "Elite" got to "Deadly" and the docking computer was a must. Even now I think the radar display is better than some other more modern programs, you could see range and if it was above/below as well as direction all in a handful of pixels!
/me goes in search of the java version

To this day whenever I go to dock or turn on autopilot I am expecting to hear that merry little tune from 2001 A Space Odyssey, which for anyone who has not played Elite is the same sound you got every time you kicked in the autopilot.
Second thing I dream of. In privateer you would come in to land on the planets and well the view was INCREDABLE. The graphics would great for the day but your imagination made up for the rest.
CCP has some big shoes to fill if they expect to beat that. I seriously suggest they have a look at that game old game to see what they are being measured on.

Man, you must have been rich!! We only had the BBC B with no co-pro
Mind you, living in Australia where some bastard had picked up an exclusive distribution deal and was ripping us off badly didn't help.
I still have that thing in my shed and I also recently found the game in it's original box packed away out there as well.

You people were missing out later then.
I used to come home from school and hit my old DOS computer to play Starflight and Starflight 2. Used to turn on my Led Zepplin record and play Kashmir while warping around the galalxy and exploring planets (even on the planet itself), fighting or making piece with aliens, looking for new fuel sources or other things to make credits, upgrading my ship, from anything to sensors to the hull itself or my lasers, using my crew to best effect, and changing their skills or the crew itself. On top of that a plot that was far reaching and non-linear, nor had to follow. (heck everytime you started the game it was differnet.) I could even dock at a staion and see my little bloke running around to buy/sell.
All the things EVE is still missing. Elite? Meh, Starflight 2 will always be it's arse kicker for me. *shrugs* That was the game that got me hooked on sci-fi on the computer. It was a living universe, and it had detail that mattered, and options galore.

Anybody know if there is anything more tangeble about the supposed Elite On-line? This being something that has periodically turned up on the net over the past few years.
Or is it still in the 'mythical pot of gold at the end of the rainbow' catagory?
