Why would anyone PvP in Eve. Unless money is really no object, its far too expensive to get your ship blown up. Insurance doesn't cover the loss- especially now that ships are going up in price. If insurance can cover the cost of your ship, or nearly cover it, without being exploited, it should. Losing your modules on your ship is often bad enough. In other games, when you die in pvp, you often don't even lose your items your character holds, let alone have to pay for a new character. In most, you simply lose some time.
This is my only major complaint about Eve. I like alot about this game, but this, to me, is a major-major problem. I like to pvp, but I really can't afford to do it in this game. I've played for four months off and on, and its still too costly. I would love if I could.

I dont know. I have 800k on my account and have lost 3 caracals and one blackbird last two days. A total of 4 podings where one included 3 implants.
PVP is like 100x more fun then any npc killing/mining/agent missions or what not.
Fight in something you can loose and pick your targets matching that. Or be a hero and attack what you see and fight to death. :)

It gives all your typically pointless action meaning and purpose. As already said its WAY more fun to play things out.

Edited by: Yates Bast on 12/01/2004 03:40:42 A game has to have pvp in it for me to really enjoy it. Of course its fun. But its just too expensive to do often. I want pvp to be what I do for the majority of time I spend in game. Its just not possible unless I always want to be broke. I suppose you could be part of a large, wealthy corporation that basically spoon-feeds you ships as you lose one, but what pride is in that? The ships I have I enjoy having only because I've earned them. I don't mind losing them in battle if its reasonably affordable to do so.

Not if you win
But that's why so much so-called PvP in EVE is battleships ganking industrials, and so on. You see very few actual *battles*, because most of the time neither side will fight without an overwhelming advantage.

Edited by: Siolan on 12/01/2004 05:03:00 Fight in frigates. Hit and run. Unless you are running super rare mods, a normal frigate loadout and ship at max probably costs in the range of 500k, and that's probably overestimating. Initial investment in orig. blueprints probably is about 5M, if you want a certain ship and specific equip. All in all, buy things you need and lose ten ships, you still come out in the range of two or three top class cruisers, not even close to the cost of one b-ship.
Seriously, if you want to fight, use a cruiser or frigs. They are quite inexpensive, and much fun can be had. I believe Miso has a frigate league, and if you asked the right people, I'm sure they'd fight you in a frig =)

Suprisingly you can make the isk streatch. It just takes alot more skill in the other areas as well such as industrial skills etc. reducing replacement costs and being careul and not falling for smack talkers means that while the wallet is never bulging, you can hang in there. This acctually makes things much more fun becuase every ship and item you have becomes valuable to you.

I've had that feeling before as well. Fighting in 0.0 against any of the alliances you will almost exclusively be facing battleships and there just is no possible way to kill a battleship in a cruiser besides a slight chance with a BB.
I've tried thorax vs typhoon, caracel vs scorpion, caracel vs tempest, caracel vs raven (no brainer) and even with max shield skills cruisers don't last more then 30 seconds.
I think it'd definitely be possible to pvp vs 0.0 alliances with a BB and a caracal though, both are cheap ships and insurance pays out close to the price of the ship. Use crappy modules as you will die and have fun.

I like to pvp in eve simply because destroying someone else's ship can make days or weeks of their own time worthless. |

well imo I'd rather fight something other than NPCs all day, even though they did get a lil' tougher. it's more exciting to loot a player than an npc too. yates maybe your just working too hard and not enough income, poor thing.
I love to put my skills I've trained to the test, I also enjoy lying and stealing. but occassionally a fair fight is fun too.

Its better this way, makes the heart pump when you have everything to loose and dying is a big deal.
If your afraid of loosing stuff, start an alt, grab a L2 frig, and go out in some really cheap gear with some friends. Your alt doesnt even need skills to pvp.
Sure he'll die alot, but when its only 100k a deal, big deal right? Get a few friends to come with you in your alts, and you maybe able to take down a cruiser or two, or even a Battleship if you play your cards right. Then think of the bragging rights you'll have. _______________________________________________

Indeed, two cheaply armed blackbirds is more than enouph for a lone battleship to handle. |

Greater sense of loss = greater sense of achievement. If you or yer opponent don't really care if you win or lose because you can replace everything in a day then PvP will start losing it's point.

I PvP because, despite how sucky I am at it, I'm even worse at every other way of playing Eve.
It's about playing to your strengths!

I PVP because it gives me an adrenaline rush. You've worked months/weeks to get your ship together and the risk of losing it is rather big when you finally engage that other person. The outcome of the battle is never a certain one, making you feel even better once you've defeated your oponent.

As someone who never does PvP, or rather avoid it at all cost, the fact that someone COULD take me on anytime is a BIG part of the exitement and fun.
Adds real danger.

You fail to see that there is actually a reasonable business case behind some of the pvp combat you speak about.
You assume everybody just pvp for the hell of it. I can give you plenty of reasons besides "fun"
- Defending prime frontier territory. With the current megacyte prices the corporations controlling the frontier regions is making superior profit.
- Helping out friends. Eve is BIG business. If you want to go places you need friends that is prepared to sacrifice ships if the going gets tough
- Preparation for the battle of player owned stations. Have you really considered what destructable structures in space will mean? If you have any plans for constructing a space station or refinery at a prcious arkonor or hemorphite field you better be prepared to defend it.

to answer the original question: because its fun.
and it¦s so much fun because of the high risk involved.
also, it¦s not that costly if you stick to well-insured cruisers or frigates. xxx Atea. |
