I've been told a few times simply not to go Amarr...but thier ships are easily my favorite. I've never been one to go with trends anyway, but I don't want to gimp myself. Are Amarr ships viable?

curse and pilgrim are few of the best ships around for small gang/solo pvp and some other amarr ships has they own uses. ============================

If you train Amarr you can get some seriously nice ships... Depending on ship class and your skills (think you need a lot) Amarr have some very valid ships and furthermore T2 stuff is said to be cheap. What people complaint about is some general issues with the EM/Thermal damage having a hard time against the popular "omni-tanks" and Amarr ships needing huge amounts of cap. Besides T1-wise it seems Amarr ships don't have much versatility but that doesn't matter much if you like laser shooting gunships... - I'm a nice guy!! and OMG I love Team Tuxford for the speedbalancing... |

Amarr recons are godly for solo pwnage and small gang. Geddon is a nice cheap ganker BS for a gang, Abaddon is a nice sniper. Retribution is a good ratting AF. Absolution is a high dps commandship with good tank.
But here is where the love ends, lasers due to EANM II omnitanks aren't too effective for example... Amarr also lack good cruisers badly for solo.

Amarr ships are very good for close/mid range pvp in stacks. The high dps and range of amarr pulse lasers compared to other close/mid range turrets makes ships like Zealot and Armagedon very fast and easy to focus fire with.

u need ALOT of skills in gunnery to fly amarr good in pvp

Right now, of all the races, Amarr have the 'most' 'problems'.
Please note the inverted commas. Things aren't nearly as bad as then forum drama queens and idiots would have you believe. Effectiveness is still more Dependant on pilot skill and set up choice than on choosing the current flavor of the patch race. My Proph (a ship which a lot of fools write off totally) has a lot to say about that.
Then add to that the fact that everything and every race gets boosted/nerfed at some point, so any problems there are are unlikely to be around for ever.
If you're already specced towards Amarr and enjoying them then carry on. - - - - - - - - - -

Alright thanx for the responses. The reason I ask is I like the look of the Amarr ships, I like lasers and I like close in fighting(I assume Amarr are the best at ultra short range? Or is that Gallente?

Gallente are the close range kings.
Amarr are supposed to be mid-range, but it's hard to dictate range when you don't have enough mids to fit a mwd+injector.
Either way, might as well train for them. Once they get boosted everyone will cry for them to be nerfed again.

Amarr are win in gangs, not so great solo (aside from the recons), but they don't suck.

Basically, amarr are in general the slowest race. And they are the only race that gets bonuses to lasers.
Now what's bad about lasers is that all ships have 60 and 35% resists on EM and Thermal on Armor. And Amarr fires most EM damage, and a bit of Thermal damage. Armor tanks with a damage control, hardeners or energized adaptive membrames will tank that easily.
But that's not even the worst part. Lasers use *lots* of capacitor energy. That is why any other race doesn't really use them. Only Amarr get bonuses to the lasers, lowering their energy drain.
However, this means that when another ship gets a bonus to enhance the tank or damage. Amarr gets a bonus just to be able to fire their weapons in the first place.
Even with bonuses, amarr still drain alot of capacitor. And there's a whole bunch of Amarr ships without the midslots to fit an injector to compensate.
There's some really great amarr ships. The recons are insane. But in general, amarr are worse, period. And though I do not wish to be just-another-gallente or whatever either, it's a game, and I don't plan on choosing amarr so I can die more often and grind more, it's supposed to be a game after all.
There's discussion about beefing up Amarr though. It might change.

As some ppl already said amarr ship are not the best but still, they are great when fitted properly and with the right skills
For exemple,
Curse/pilgrim are just insane(read madpwnmachine-of-doom)
Armegeddon are cheap, and with a decent fitting(around 50 mil) and skill......corpmate had to take out a navy mega to kill it 1vs1( wont say the fitting but...the key is simply....NEVER overstack mods)
Abbadon, correcltly fitted are really great

Absolution...never flown one myself.....but .....can easely agree with high dps/good tank/tacking...(no speed tought)
Harbinger: Can be used as solo ship(did it once and it was really good)
arbitrator.....enought said for cruiser
but the rest of ship(frig/af/hac(zealot .... for the price i would go for harbinger) apocalypse, covert......) are reaally bad
And.....omni tank does hurt but ....hey stop trying to pull crazy dps and pull insane armor amount/tank(oups said too much)
other thing is....if you fly amarr try to always have a spare sensor booster/ECCM radar you could refit if needed
Imo ppl underestate amarr laser-boat......
and they learn to regret it

Amarr are underestimated.
Also, realize that the people whining on the forums are maybe 0.01% of the entire Amarr population. It's a general rule that those who are unhappy complain, and those who are happy (enough) stay quiet.

If we're talking mid-ranged gang pvp, amarr are still pretty good. Yes, maybe their damage sucks unless you sacrifice all of your ship setup to it, maybe they're slow and can't really do much EW, but the Lots of HP-Mid Ranged Guns- concept does allways contribute to a gang. Plus, lots of amarr ships have quite sizeable dronebays, and even a couple of really awesome drone-dedicated boats (recons). The damage output gets loads better when you specialize in things, and in case of Amarr it's allmost necessary to invest lots of skilling into Lasers, general Gunnery, Armor and Drones to be effective. And ofc, there is actually some amarr buff upcoming in the next patches. Hey, i've even heard that lasers will actually be able to affect it's opponents heat capacity, when Heat is intoduced! That'd be cool, wouldnt it? So, if you like it, keep training.
