There's a rich vein of WoW hatred running through the forums, which can easily be dismissed as fanboism just like the assumption that eve is so complicated that you're instantly proving yourself Clever by installing the client. equally other titles like Guild Wars are also kicked in the balls as regularly as possible.
But it did get me thinking.
MMO players are made, not born, so what did you play before you discovered Eve, how do you fink they compare, and why Eve in particular?

Earth And Beyond.
Played other games such as L2, Guild Wars, SWG while playing eve but gaining experience from killing the same rubbish little things over and over is too tedious.

This is my first and only MMO type of game. Have only played first person shooter type games before, mainly of the BF2 and Ghost Recon. Got bored with those, a friend showed me Eve, and have been here ever since. --------------------

Eve has been my first mmo. The only other mmo I've played would have been a run in planetside until bfrs spoiled it.
Can't say I really hate wow or other games but I know enough about them to know it's not what I'm looking for.

was a single player for a looong time. got broadband. played WoW from release, but eventually got bored waiting for new content and burned myself out farming PvP rank.
looked for another MMO to fill the geek shaped hole, but City of Heros bored the snot out of me and Planetside was a ghost town by the time i started playing.
stumbled across the new forum of a group of chaps who i'd known in a vague on-line sense for years, and discovered they had an Eve corp. Signed up. Quit. Came back.

Various phases,
started out late on games like Baldur's Gate and other single player RPGs, a couple of SP FPS titles too, but not many.
Then I got into CS 1.6, joined a clan, played online casually. After that a bunch of mates got a Call of Duty: United Offensive clan together, played that prolifically over the massive summer holiday after year 11, doing like 45-50 hours a week.
That carried on for a long while, we fell apart when CoD 2 came out though, half the members wanted to migrate, half didn't =/
Then came Guildwars first, and I finally subbed to EvE after playing through half a dozen trials over the previous 2 years.
Now I'm on EvE, or when I get bored, I can still blow someone's head off on CoD.

EVE was my first MMO. The first game I really fell in love with, was Elite. And Elite II, and hell even First Encounters. I loved them so.
When I moved to Uni, I did online gaming in the form of MUDs (Nanvaent and Thanatos, which I expect no one to recognise).
Stopped for a while, played lots and lots of RTS games. Total War, C&C, that kind of thing. Odd bit of FPS stuff online, but never really got to liking it. Oh, and played Warcraft 3 extensively. And online gamed in it too. But never really saw the appeal of playing an individual character, when I've commanded armies, and conquered worlds.
Then there was EVE, that got described to me (down the pub) as 'Like Elite, but multiplayer', which frankly was just a dream come true.
And... that was about 2 1/2 years ago. Since then, I've bought about 3 games. Rome Total War, Medieval 2, Supreme Commander. Really should stop though, as I don't actually play them all that much.

RTS games, EVE was my first MMOG... WoW isn't my type of game, too little risk involved int it.
Even though i'm not a big pvp fan (ship to ship pvp that is) WoW is a little bit to tame for my taste.

A tale in the desert. Played that from mid beta and about halfway into the first telling. Hard to compare, totally different game.
Have tried some others while taking breaks from eve though.
Anarchy Online - Bought it with some expansion, played for a couple of hours before uninstalling and cancelling. Missions that are even more boring than Eve's, but nothing else to do and crappy graphics = one crappy game.
World of warcraft - Managed to play it for almost a month before cancelling.
Everquest II - Quite fun distraction, a lot more fun than WoW with some pretty decent PVE content. Lots and lots and lots of missions and some really nice graphics. Held out for almost 3 months before i decided to give it up and get a third EVE account instead.
City Of Villains - Wonderful character creation, good RP. Crappy gameplay. Just grinding very similar missions over and over again.
Saga Of Ryzom - Very good skill/levelsystem. Nice graphics and very nice community. Actually it was/is a great game even though it is very rough around the edges. (Would need a lot of work on missions, UI and other things. You really notice that they didnt have the manpower to spend to much time on a lot of things). I never actually grew tired of Ryzom, eve was just better and no time to play two games for any length of time.
Thing is i know that every time i try a new game its just for a little while. It never takes more than a couple of months before i start to miss the Eve universe. I think the single shard nature of Eve has a big part in this. Every other game seems lacking in depth when you are used to the kind of politics, markets etc you get on a single huge server.

Before I was exposed to eve I played:
- www.hyperiums.com This game is a scifi strategy game, were you control planets and fleets, invade and destroy others, for alliances and have fun. 3/10 compared to Eve. Free but you need to acquire 'credits' to use some advanced tech.
- www.nationstates.net Another multiplayer strategy game that places you in charge of a fictional nation you create. The free game offers a nice little userface with some alliance options (regions), but 99% of the game is on the forums / player/region forums. Its an RP game for the most part. 3/10 compared to Eve.
And other games I played before eve, I still play now suck as: - Counter-strike - Battlefield 2 and now Battlefield 2142 (omg-bbq-pwn-!!!!) - Dawn of War - Company of Heroes * * * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euZ0j7vtKEQ

I used to play Jumpgate (I think it's still running actually, but very few people play). It was pretty good actually - PvP was more fun, because you had a*****pit-eye view and guns always pointed forwards so you actually had to fly fancy manouvres and aim your guns. --------------------------------------------------------------------

WoW - Beautiful world, great transferred setting. Low-Level gameplay is brilliant and interesting. Endgame content is a boring, mindless grind with anonymous or much to large groups. Basically: Level 1-30 (or so) - great game; Level cap - graphical chat interface while killing <random monster spawn> with 40 people as often per week as you can afford.
Class balancing is nonexistant, because of PvP concerns. PvP does not belong into this game, but was included for business reasons. Community is based around some very very nice people, and a majority of epeen-"look I have more epix then you"-kids. (And very cute girls play this game!)
The interface is the best game interface created today, fully customizable.
All impression based on EU realms.
Rating: 7/10 <Level 30, 3/10 Endgame, 6/10 RP, 2/10 PvP
I played a little bit of UO on german freeshards, but that game had never fascinated me.
Now in comparision, EVE. - Interesting gameplay and world setting, really big universe. As a new player, gameplay is absolutly boring, sitting around, waiting for skills to learn. You can go mining, missioning or die in combat PvP. Perhaps "endgame" aka "you now have enough SP to fly something which can actually do something" will be more interesting.
Overall nice community, helpful to new players. You can play as good, neutral or evil, basically. You can choose what your professions are, no EXP grind and class/level system (replaced with the ISK-grind ofc).
The interface totally *****, non customizable, laggy. This game has no sound (unless you extract the soundfiles manually and play them in Winamp...).
Rating: 3/10 gameplay with low SP, 7/10 community, 9/10 for setting and freedom. Cant comment on endgame, fleet battles, more pvp then "look there is an interceptor, tackle him. - damn too fast".
I would never go back to WoW at this point. The game is ruined for me, with the new patches and the addon. Yes I was the second druid (and top-10 player) on my realm at level 70 after the expansion hit. You need some time to realize that this game is not as good as you think. Since I were only interested in PvE, all those PvP > all changes in WoW basically canceled my account. I can chat with my friends without paying money to see an elf running around while typing. It would be a good game, and I do not hate it. It is just no longer something I truly enjoy playing.
I am unsure about EVE. It surely has potential, but progression is way too slow. Waiting 30 days just for 1 skill to complete, which has no real effect on what you can do is a little bit disappointing. I have found a great corp; small but with very nice players. I enjoy playing with them, even if I mostly hinder them in some way because of my low SP (wanted to low-sec gatecamp and me in a frigate ).
I have found no other mmorpg which suited my needs yet, so I stay here a little bit longer. We'll see what happens. ___

nice topic.
I started my onlinegaming career with Dark Age of Camelot. and quit that because i am a PvP person, and in Daoc no-one with a life besides the game, can keep up with the equipment/level grind, because each time you come even close to the top, a new expansion gets added.
In eve this is totaly diffrent for 2 reasons: 1) offline skill training. 2) skill system vs. level system.
You can specialize in something, and reach the cap in this Field, and this cap is rarely expanded. So, you can choose what you want to do, and excell in it without 12 hours grinding a day.

My first MMO was Asheron;s Call. I had no idea what to do. So I played for the 30 trial and left.
Next was DAOC, started on Mordred and played until radar was so rampant that you just could not level anymore. So I switched to a carebare server with friends and I'm still playing it.
Played WoW, where I have 4 level 60's+ and 1 level 70. Stopped playing that, it's all about me me me. A game with 7 million people and 0 community.
Played EQ2 for a while. Until I realized the awful grind this was going to be.
Giving EvE a second look, Doing missions and baught a frigate upgrade. Only to have one given to me as a reward after 3 more missions DOH!. I'm in the 3'rd day of the trial. I'm enjoying it. The game is really complex in some aspect.
So far so good, Got some tells asking to join different Corps but I need to understand more of what's going on first. The guides are dry and don't convey the feel or consequences of my actions or choices.
Rambled enough :-)
