Frankly, i sometimes think that eve will never truly be a "space" game until it is possible for me to point my ship in a direction, set the distance i want to jump, and warp to it.
such a mechanics change would require better directional scan abilities probably, and limits to system boundaries (or everyone would be able to go make a safe a gazillion AU off plane), but i always feel the current "warp only to locations" restriction greatly detracts from the feeling of "space", but also narrows down the wealth of gameplay opportunities an "open navigation" system would allow for.
Could it ever be possible? or ontop of the necessary gameplay mods, would it also be much harder to run from a technical point of view(server issues?)
what do you think?

[perhaps i should have inserted the requisite "with balancing" disclaimer]

In the olden days you could do this. You right clicked in the minimap and selected create bookmark. This made a selected few players (at the time) the opportunity to create some really really deep safespots.

I think Warp to Anywhere, at any range could be balanced, you'd just need to make it use a lot more cap for short distance warps and directionless warps compared to the equivalent warp in.

Ive always had this feeling that the game runs on tracks and it would be much better to make it more free. The would be alot of work involved to change it over tho I suspect. Interesting tho.

Theyre were talking about adding positional warp point relative to a warptarget.
Above, behind etc etc..

It wont work, more cloaked carebears in safespots is for the lose. Plus it will stop the production of carebear tears for my ebil plan of destrution. More tears, more power.

It must be technically possible with current hardware. You can stop anywhere by running out of Cap.
Anybody who ever tried to probe mission runners can testify how many 'randomly' placed drones/shuttles/Velators are lying around, literally in the middle of nowhere. The space is already simulated. You just can't travel to it by ordinary means.
However introducing something like "Warp Forward 8AU" might have a bad effect on gate camping / combat in general.

The idea is cool, but it would maybe be a bit too powerful. What I mean is, I can see this being used to check if there are bubbles on gates, as in theory you could warp to a gate at like 300km, out of pull-in range of bubbles, and check if its clear. A lot of gates have planets nearby that you can scan the gate from, but when your in warp to one of those thats all alone in the middle of nowhere, and you have no idea if theres a camp, its kinda cool ------------ Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo Etoophie ([email protected]) |

Something else that would be really cool would be to follow players that warp. When someone warped in Frontier (space game much like eve) for Amiga 500 you could select the warpwhole that appeared from the warp and then choose to follow him. You could even intercept others that were in warp if i remember correctly. This might be hard to implement in Eve because of the fast warpingtimes. In frontier a warp could take several hours.

Elite: Frontier actually :D
FYI Eve is based off of Elite (more Elite: Frontier I think), Wing Commander Privateer and the like. I loved that game.
That galaxy map simulated the entire galaxy with stars in correct places, planets, moons etc. And it was only 2mb :D
