Wrong- They have said they want PvP to continue to be a big part of EVE, not that it is all EVE is about.
No, wrong it IS what it's all about, its an MMO, PvE is and always will be secondary to that. And any Carebeary operations such as mining and manufacture are PvP in themselves and contribute to PvP combat. The game is focused on the concept of combat anyway if pirates stopped blowin $hit up theres no market, any weapon mod you make is eventually used to kill someone, thankfully theres enough people to agree with me that create a massive market by going out every night and blowin up what they can
So what exactly are you saying, you wanna take certain elements of PvP out altogether? you want areas to be created where people dont have to interact with other people in any way where your actions dont effect anyone else in any way, you want.......a single player game to exist within an MMO

There are lots of ways of not getting involved in PvP combat. in the 3 years i have been in and out of eve i have never gotten involved because it didnt interest me. so i stuck to high sec and made my living and enjoyed the game there. There is plenty to do in High Sec and for the most part it keeps you out of any PvP combat.
Not entirely. The traders have no game tools to deny those that grief them the ability to buy things they built.
The environment is built to support combat PVP more than anything else.
CCP needs to give market tools to traders where they can deny war targets and those they set to negative standing the ability to purchase items from them.
Then we might have PVP in all aspects of the game. Idea: Treaties Idea: Jump Rigs |

Yes, because it would have a real impact in the game. It's not like everyone is easily able to make an alt (if he doesn't have one or a 2nd account already) and buy stuff with him.

Question for you.. The old 80's game Contra, you could play 2 player. Would you consider it a PvP game?
Because by the deffintion quoted above it would be. If you picked up a weapon upgrade then the other person didnt get it, so you took it from him and it would be indirect PvP.
The auction house in WoW would be PvP. Raids in WoW would be PvP because some get loot and others dont. Doing quests in EQ would be PvP cause if you killed a quest mob, somone else couldnt.
You need to narrow your perspective of what PvP is.
Yup, those are all pvp. I remember smacking by buddy in the head with a frying pan for jacking my Spread Gun powerup.

It's pretty easy to avoid PvP. I've only twice been killed by people I did not intend to fight, and both incidents were basically the result of stupidity on my part.
I generally avoid PvP. I haven't got the nerves for it. (unfortuneately, the only way to properly test a new ship setup, is to fly it into combat) ---

I am wondering why in the EVE Universe I would want to renew it.
I am a Single Player, I enjoy EVE because:
1. It is a rich role playing environment 2. It evolves 3. Not everyone plays PvP 4. There are many non-combat play actions
These four good reasons to pay and play I feel are negated:
1. It is impossible to avoid PvP 2. Machiavellian society degrading into brutishness
Does CCP care about "Care Bears"? Will CCP ever create a non-prey class of player?

Sounds like this isn't the game for you, I suggest you go play a game that will hold your hand and provide everything for you. If you can't avoid PvP then your doing something wrong, I have been attacked once, and it was my fault, becaused I was in 0.4 space.
Why not just equip guns, then your not prey by the hunter, and just attack your hunter so they become the prey.

What is the problem with solo play? I play solo and have done for over two years and enjoyed it a lot. My main problem is that my shifts make it very difficult to be online at certain times and although I have friends in this game, I rarely get the chance to be online when they are.
I've mined and ratted in lowsec, been through 0.0 a few times. Twice being chased, once by BOB and managed by pure luck to escape both times, it had to be luck since I had very few skills then, it was long before WTZ and I didn't have instas. For the most part, I have had great fun even as a solo player.
Now I mostly mine in highsec, manufacture ships and play the game to chill out. Being a Security Guard and dealing mostly with hoards of mouthy kids at a shopping mall, along with the occasional shoplifter, I get wound up during the day and I find that mining in Eve is a great relaxant.
Don't knock solo play, you can still do a lot in this game.

That's another issue really.
They should require all characters on the same account to be in the same corp. Wouldn't stop those with multiple accounts I realize but then CCP is making more money if they are paying for more accounts.
I still feel they need to give traders in the game the tools necessary to limit their clients if they so choose. If you gave them tools to set who could buy by standing, you also open up the possibility they could offer discounts to those with high standing to them, or charge more to those with negative standing, or just outright not sell to anyone they set to negative standing. Until we have that we don't really have a true pvp economic model, as their is no real recourse that those that prefer market warfare to really use.

If EvE is a PvP game only, I double dog dare CCP to advertise in gaming magazines and online communities that it is a "PvP game only".... oh how I dare you.
Everyone here knows that you need a strong carebear community. But war'dec system is so broken, that anyone can attack anyone for only 2 mils. They haven't fix corp vs corp yet. So war'dec is still in chaos in Empire.
A few threads down, the same people (pvpers) that post about "go away carebear" are are whining about price INFLATION in EvE.
Anyway, I dont know why I bother to post in here, we all know he will soon leave EvE.

No, only the carebears think EvE needs a strong carebear community. Everyone else know we have no room for carebears in EvE, and that they should all go back to WoW. Industrials aren't carebears just because they are industrials. They only become carebears when they, like you, complain about non-consentual PvP, and claim that CCP should protect them from dangers because they can't be assed to do it themselves.

Only carebears like you think the war dec system is broken. Now, according to CCP, it is working as intended. Perhaps it isn't the game that is broken, but yourself?

Totally agree with Madame Hywoaf on the worth of trade sanctions.
The business oriented player has huge assets invested in industry with far less military capability. If you war with me, then I should be capable of not selling to you and offering price incentives to your enemies. That would be pvp, business style.
We need business bears too.

like i said on page 3
Quote: the hunter becomes the hunted if you time things right
sure everyone dies sometime, you are not prey even if you died 100 times and killed nothing.
you are only prey when you do nothing about it
to state that you are "prey" because you got killed makes you seem like a weak individual in the first place because with this train of thought you have already become submissive to those that kill you
one passive thing you can do is to avoid getting yourself into dangerous situations (if dying is such a big fear to you)
another thing you can do is make a tank / many warb stabs on your industrial when travelling in losec its worth it to lose some cargospace if you consider the profits made
an active thing you can do is to pay someone to kill them for you or recruit pvpers into your corp

An astounding observation! You point out an aspect of game play that I have not appreciated. Yes, you indeed have provided a reason to Pay to be Prey. However I do disagree with your analysis that EVE is a zero sum game. The constant regeneration of mineral wealth alone prevents the zero sum. Mr. Hanobaal clearly follows the chain from the minerals to the finished products. I may also add that wealth is added simply by transporting goods from point to point.
I am afraid that I my OP was too vague on the matter of what PVP I am protesting. I specifically wanted to debate player ship vs player ship and more specifically how game play allows 3 battleships vs. a lone Industrial.
What I have gathered from this discussion, the loss of a lone very naive and, what I see now, reckless, industrial that contained goods totaling 16% of my wallet was all my own fault
Mr. Starwalker, Being a Single Player corporation is not an error, it is a style of game play. As Mr. Jawas states EVE is large and complex enough to accommodate many play styles. I believe, in fact, that EVE is faceted in such a way that your opinion about EVE being about dominance and my opinion of EVE being about cooperation can coexist. It's all about what part of the elephant you are touching and you own personal perception.
Mr. Khorian - I agree with Mr. Thesas, I shall happily attend your book signing party If you do not contribute these bits of wisdom to the new EVE wiki, I shall post them giving you full credit.
Ms Hywaof - you bring up a very interesting point that perhaps there will be more game economy development on. As Mr. Thesas states, we are all in Lenin's situation of being the capitalist that sells the rope that is used to hangs us. Your suggestion would even lead to a new class of player arms brokers that may make the game more interesting. Perhaps a set of rules restricting direct buy/sells depending on faction standings?
Ms Tigress - I think I may just stay a while longer.
Thanks everyone for contributing to this thread.

To put it simply, "carebears" in the strictest sence of the term want everything handed to them.
I haven't even finished my first 14 days on this game, I've lost 2 punishers and a destroyer (I could have a cruiser or even a battlecruiser already if I had the money, I've got the skillz) to NPC fighting missions, and I've already been on a patrol with my Corporation in 0.0 space.
If you can't handle some competition and hardship, go play WoW, where you're pampered. Don't get me wrong, I play WoW as well, but I play this game for its realism in interaction.
Learn to use your brain, and you might accomplish something.
And being in a Player Corporation doesn't even mean you will get attacked either. Like everyone says, if you think and be cautious, you'll be fine. And, you can learn alot more form a Player Corp than on your own. Maybe you jsut need some people to ask questions to to learn something and get input.
Also, someone stated that a big problem with EVE is that new corporations get started and get ganked by the old guys. This is a realistic occurence even in our world.
This is just another form of people wanting something handed to them. You should NEVER form a corporation before you are strong enough to survive. Realistically, the top people in the world climbed the layman ranks before they had a mega-giant business/corporation. You can't expect to just start a corporation and survive.
This isn't WoW, where you can have a lvl 60 character in 3 weeks; there is no power-leveling here. You people need to learn that you have to earn your skills and respect.
And I've learned all that in like only 8 days of actual gametime. If you can't see that, you don't need to be playing something that takes more brainpower than you are willing to part with.

Carebear is a ludicrous term used to define a multitude of diverse play styles other than one distinct play style, namely pvp. It is simplistic and naive to lump the many faces of Eve into two camps, pvp against everyone else.
What many are looking for is an equal playing stage where one may pursue many interests and be equally competitive with their counterparts of opposite play styles.
If Eve is to have an economic model that promotes these diverse play styles, then it is reasonable and somewhat expected by players that the mechanisms to compete exist in whatever play style one chooses.
You have military ships, I have industrial ships. Like it as not, you need what I do in Eve just as I need you to buy from me. I should have the option to not sell to you and to go so far as to offer incentives for others to not sell to you. At present, I may put a bounty on you and that is about all.
Or allow my strip miners peel your gun ship like an onion and I would call it even. I would like someone to explain the physics that allow strip miners to extract heavy ore from asteroids yet be ineffective on a hull.
That would be pvp across the board as opposed to shooting fish in a barrel.

Eve is designed and built for PvP. Delve into pvp and you will find more than 75% of the game.
It is possible to play solo. But you'd only see about 10% of the game if you attempted no player interaction. In theory you could buy off the market and run missions up to and over level 4 and get a shiny CNR to show off all by yourself.
Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me.
Eve, is a PvP game. The very facets of this game were built to encourage engaging playerS in combat. By the way, PvP is not just CoW or RIOT ganking you in lowsec or PRVTR ganking you in high sec.
It is fully possible to be an industrialist and not be a carebear. In my opinion, you cross the line into carebear once you complain the world is not nice to you and that is an unfair thing.
Lowsec is Darwinian, 0.0 is Machiavellian. Empire? Why, that is the work of Adam Smith and his idea of the free-market economy. You could never set foot into lowsec and still make it as an industrialist or a scientist or merely a market profiteer. This would be little to no fun...but you know.
If you want to avoid all pvp join an NPC corp and stay in high security space. That will save you from just about every form of pvp.
If you seriously want a game where there is no pvp and you can be an industrialist all you want?
HARVEST MOON IS FOR YOU!
....or play WoW on a non pvp server.
But please. Eve is realistic in this sense, life isn't fair... - "The Mains Created the alts They rebelled They look...and feel...human Some are programmed to think they are human There are many alts. And they have a plan." - Forumstar Galactica |

Edited by: Hawk Fireblade on 29/04/2007 04:23:28 I do sympathise to a greater degree, although personally I think it's alot of factors.
Early days it wasn't so much of a problem with lower population numbers, and of course the market was far more sensible and things were alot more disposable and easier to replace if you lost something.
Now the market is out of control, especially T2 which most of the older players use, while T2 should be a bit more expensive you shouldn't loose months of play time as far as isk to replace a damn Cruiser.
Unfortunately the Devs don't seem to understand the astronomical negative effects of having a in game economy that's out of control mainly due to lack of any measures to keep prices in check, and how it trashes a game, or indeed all the aspects it filters through to.
But your not alone by any means as far as feeling this, personally I don't mind PvP so much expect it's too damn costly to participate in unless you hamster wheel for isk, and it hurts casual players especially now, where before the market was alot cooler and things were far more disposable.
Needs looking at hard and soon.

Those of you who are claiming to be carebears, you don't see the big picture, you see a tiny sliver of the game.
PVE feeds PVP feeds PVE feeds PVP feeds PVE feeds PVP
Eve is not a FPS, it is an RTS.
PVE is RESOURCE GATHERING.
PVP is a means of gaining access to areas to richer resources.
Basically its about galactic conquest.
You might personally not be interested in galactic conquest and that's fine, but many players play Eve to conquer the universe.
If you are not interested in galactic empire, just stay in NPC corp in Highsec.
Join corp = /pvp on Leave corp = /pvp off
Create a "Friends for Life" channel, put a password on it, invite your friends, boom you have a social club without the wardec.
Or better yet, create characters of the same race/bloodline/profession. Then join a corp and leave it, you will all be in the same NPC corp, like you can all be members of "Deep Core Mining" its just like being in a player corp.
You know what would be a cool buff to give carebears?
Let them join specific NPC corps.
Like maybe 3-4 friends who absolutely hate PVP could go join Roden Shipyards or something so they can all be on the same corp channel.
Maybe make NPC corps charge %10 tax also just like a real corp.

You know what would be a cool buff to give carebears?
Let them join specific NPC corps.
Like maybe 3-4 friends who absolutely hate PVP could go join Roden Shipyards or something so they can all be on the same corp channel.
Maybe make NPC corps charge %10 tax also just like a real corp.
nah if they are smart theyll figure out the combinations of starting characters that give rise to any other profession within 6 months playing time without any wasted SP

As Kaar correctly pointed out above, I think the problem is that you say you are a 'single player'. Although Eve can be played solo, I think it shines when played with others.
I went from being in player corps, back to playing solo due to major time constraints. And tbh, it sucks. I am either boring myself doing level 4s, or I'm wandering around lowsec trying to find a fight (and failing badly- who said lowsec was dangerous, lol). IMHO you need to play with others to really appreciate how good Eve is. Hopefully my situation will improve -- 2d EveMaps
