Proof that 1 = 2
Start with a = b a = b
Multiply both sides by b. ab = b¦
Subtract a¦ from each side. ab - a¦ = b¦ - a¦
Factor both sides. a(b - a) = (b + a) (b û a)
Divide both sides by (b û a). a = b + a
Now, letÆs say that a = 1 and b = 1. Plug it into a = b + a. 1 = 1 + 1
1 = 2
time is ticking. -----------------------------------

If we assume a=b then you're dividing by 0 in the last step, since (b-a)=0
I had that question in a math test last year

(b-a)=0
Dividing by (b-a) is dividing by 0 which is undefined and can't be done. -

This man speaks the truth. With unknown quantities it logically works, but since you obviously can't have the solution you're proposing, the fault is in the mentioned division by zero.
You take what is offered. And that must sometimes be enough. |

a+2*b, except if, as proven above, a=b then that's 3a=3b and divide that by (a-b) and you'll get wreckings even in F-T type lag.
If your results vary I'd just say go by the seat of your pants, almost as good as a full bistromatic, that.

Possibly.
It matters inside the ivory tower, but out here, in the real world, n/0 is not allowed.

0/0 ...
is that like 0/n = 0 ...
or like n/n = 1 ...
or is it n/0 = infinite?
Hence 0/0 is undefined. Apply L'Hospital liberally.
Originally by: Mimiru I can divide by 0
That's false. Everyone knows that only Chuck Norris can divide my zero.

Edited by: El Berto on 02/04/2007 19:31:33 No need for powers of infinity here. After factoring, the simplest substition is;
a . 0 = (b + a) . 0
therefore 0 = 0
True for all real values and we can all sleep well tonight.
Edit: Powers not factors, doh

In simple: If a=b and a=1 and b=1 > deviding by (b-a)=(1-1)=0 > deviding by 0.
It's been 7 years! I can still keep up with maths... lol.

That's just rounding by the calculator.
Although 0.9 recurring (so an infinite string of 9's after the .) does infact = 1.

There's also the whole infinity thing
Where 0.9999 is 1.
a = 0.9999 10*a=9.9999 10a-a=9a=9 (this is the tricky part. but it has infinite decimals, this returns 9, not 8.9991) 9a/9=a=1
