Edited by: Princess Trinity on 18/03/2007 12:51:18 This is coming from myself who has played eve for over 3 years.
I have started fresh and would like to bring some issues to everyones attention.
Its very simple, first impressions are a key aspect to people liking something or someone.
At least the mimnitar tutorial mission is so horribly explained and bugged that I am sure most new players will be turned off from eve right away. not to mention that theres 1 single mission spawn at a planets moon and about 100 people and hour trying get to it.
its just plain stupid the way it was done, and needs to be altered and fixed.
Right now theres 3 of us all waiting for the same spawn to appear......

I think I read that something like this was planned for Rev 2.
That said, the noob areas are alot better than they were 3 years ago when I first tried the game.

The Alt my player started at Xmas tells me that the same storyline mission for new Caldari pilots has the same overcrowding problem. It made the initial stages a doddle, she was flying though rooms in a pirate complex littered with wrecks, but in the final room she too had to wait for a spawn to loot an item from to complete the mission.
I guess it illustrates unintentionally two important aspects of Eve: you have to think about what your doing and asking for advice is often good. I'd even venture to suggest the Devs shouldn't change the mission because of that :-)

Anyway, I remember going through this same scenario about a year ago so I can feel the pain. It does get better beyond the tutorial.

I finished yesterday my Caldari tutorial and I was aghast at the third mission I got. First you kill some easy pirate and retrive documents you take back to station. Second mission is to bring some codebook one jump away...fair enough and with ample of time for n00bs to settle in a fark up (I did not take the codebook on my first run in my cargo bay ). Now, once that was finished I got told by the tutorial agent to meet this second agent for further missions. I though, "great, more cash" yet I was to be denied.
You meet this agent who tells you to go a pirate nest and kill them all basically. Since this is my third mission I did not expect anything all to weird. Once I get there I find like 10-15 pirates of various kinds. I think this must be of the easy type (would not make any other sense, right?). But since I was specialitzing in mining I decided to go for broke and buy me a Condor Frigate which I fitted out with missile launchers as to "finish that mission asap".
I got VERY badly pwned without scoring a single kill by a million missiles, lasers and what not they threw at me. I barely made the warp out.
At the end a compassive soul came along and helped me out in his Drake or I would have lost for sure the cash and standing.
How is this good? I had NO chance whatsoever against that horde on my freaking third mission as a n00b. I would guess that most people would even have gone there with their POS Ibis...lmao

Mission agents randomly pick a mission from the level 1 database. You have the chance to pull a hard mission or an easy mission...just depends on what they pull for you. Eve doesn't hold your hand so mission selection is random at best. Watch the rewards and you will soon realize what a hard mission is versus an easy one and can gage if you want to accept it or not. --------------------------------------------

While that is true, and has some good points, I do think that for a few hour old n00b, they should perhaps stick to more easy missions, and slowly work them up to more dificult ones, instead of some random one.

Like I said...it was my tutorial agent who sent me there. How the heck should I know about all this. Almost every game out there gives you harder quests as you grow in experience and capabilities. I got around 50.000 iks for my second tutorial mission and this one was offering around 100.000 if everything went perfect. Yes, I did expect it to be harder but not straight out impossible. I do not even have anything to compare it to without previous experience. I¦m still learning the basics and my aim was to finish the tutorial and start mining. I would have probably not gone if my tutorial agent would have not told me so. My beef is that a mission like that for a totally n00b is damaging for the game itself and thats why I posted this on this thread. Because I found a nice guy who helped me out I could finish it..what if not? Loose standing on my first day on a mission no real n00b could have expected to survive. Not even going into the whole disaster that would have been getting actually blown up.

That's where Eve is different. Eve doesn't hold your hand and tell you 'this mission is hard, don't accept it if you are a 2 day old character'. You have to figure these things out for yourself, or ask more experienced players. The game's not designed to be 'noob-friendly'. --------------------------------------------

Welcome to EVE, Ebusitanus!
Yeah, getting horribly owned on your first non-tutorial mission can be pretty discouraging. But think about what you actually lost... or rather, what you didn't lose.
I'm assuming you were in the noob ship, since you thought the mission would be just as easy as the tutorial ones, so that was replaced free of charge. On the other hand, if you instantly went for a better frigate and got that wrecked, then you deserve it for not checking out the combat scene first.
Your tutorial agent did not send you there. Your tutorial agent only gives you the two tutorial missions (get the graduation certificates, then deliver something), and then she referred you to a new agent. Since that agent is new, your standing with said agent is already non-existent to begin with, so failing the first mission doesn't make a difference.
Granted, it's hard to "judge a mission by payout" if you haven't done enough to get a feel for the range. Still, you had enough time to bail out after seeing the massive swarm of death and ask the corp for some advice ("omg so much red is this normal??!?!").
Anyways, enough bashing because you're probably feeling very discouraged right now. The noob corp is there to help. As long as you don't outright beg, I'm sure you'll find some assistance. And if you're in SWA, maybe my character (Mazzini) will see you around
