Using plain figures... Hammerhead II 12 damage x 1.92 damage mod --------------------------- 2.00 rate of fire
11.52 dps
Ogre I 24 damage x 1.60 damage mod ----------------------------- 2.00 rate of fire
19.2 dps
taking the extra skills that apply to tech II drones they are probably pretty much identicle (maxed skills) without taking tracking into the equation
Easy Target -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Tulisin Dragonflame on 14/03/2007 05:09:47 The Ogre's much higher base damage will make it pull way way ahead when you start adding in drone skill/ship bonuses.
Also don't forget than any DPS advantage is multiplied by the number of drones, so if the ogres end up at 10 DPS more after skills, they're actually 50 DPS more total with a full set.

Basically, go with the larger drone unless enemy ship sizes force you to pick a smaller drone that can target better. It does no good to have an extra 50 damage from your heavy drones if they can't hit a Guardian Veteran orbiting you for 3 minutes.
In terms of general purpose, T2 mediums are your best bet - if you can afford the price tag.

Easy Target is right, the heavies will always do the higher theorical damage.
Taking some skills at lvl 4 into account : Basically, the skills have equivalents for all drone types (combat drons -> heavy drone gives 5% damage) and only the drones specialization should add more damage on T2 drones that T1 drones won't have included in their damage modifier.
Hammerhead II 12 damage x 1.92 damage mod * 1.08 gallente drone spe * 1.2 combat drone op * 1.8 drone interfacing --------------------------- 2.00 rate of fire
26,87 dps
Ogre I 24 damage x 1.60 damage mod * 1.2 heavy drone op * 1.8 drone interfacing ----------------------------- 2.00 rate of fire
41,47 dps
So, T1 ogres do 54% more damage than T2 hammerheads.
The ogres will be better for long fights on the same target, if you can enter combat at close range of your opponent (may it be NPC or player). Ogres are more easyly shot down (slow and bulky, a cruiser can web one and blast - as in blasters, or any short range weapon - it totally in a second) Ogres will not be better if the targets are destroyed very fast and they have to travell between targets quite often (this is often like that in missions), if targets are frigates/destroyers/very fast cruisers, or if you enter combat with few opponents that are very far from you. For easy lvl 3 missions, I much prefer having 5 med and 5 light drones, I tried with 5 heavies (even with omni tracking link and drone nav computers) on my myrmidon and it made missions longer because of small and fast ships I had to shoot before I can use the acceleration gates. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Flying Vexor and Ishkur, Myrmidon was too slow, got ganked by 3 BC and a Megathron...

Yes, the Heavy Drones will have a much higher base damag output, even when using T1 versus T2. However, depending on what you are fighting that extra damage may or may not be realized. They gotta be able to hit the target, after all, so using heavies on anything smaller than a BC may end up yielding lower overall DPS due to misses.
They are also painfully, painfully slow. I'm not kidding, it's brutal watching your heavies plod from target to target when they're 50km apart.
Also, don't forget that you should always have your max number of drones deployed. Deploying 3x T1 Heavies may look like it'll be better (DPS wise) than 5x T2 Mediums on paper, but I assure you using the 5x Medium drones is a better decision. --Wherever you go, there you are.
