I have seen plently of Harpy / Hawk ratting setups, where are the PVP ones.
Are they viable pvp machines? Setups and explinations would be great, thanks.
P.S. Leaning more towards a Harpy for pvp, discuss. =)

Highs: 4*150 tech IIs & upgrade limo Mids : Magnetic Scattering, Sensor Booster , could go with 2nd sensor booster for 1 sec lock times or warp disruptor/ webifier for inties that come close , fixed parallel cap recharger Low: Mag stab 2, tracking enhancer 2
With Spike, I can hit out 71km with sharpshooter 3 & as 4
Does a decent amount of damage & sit far enough off gate, and you wont die that often. I hit on average 30-35 per shot, with damage up to 100

Oh, I must say that a Hawk is really underestimated as a PvP ship...
Try a rocket Hawk for some really fun fights... Something along the lines of:
Hi: 4 x Rocketlaunchers, a good small NOS
Meds: AB, small shieldbooster, Scrambler (7,5k is usually enough) EM-harderner
Lows: BCU, PDU (or 2 BCU if it fits)
Rigs: Havn't rigged mine yet, but I would propably go for something that helps the tank. 1 x CCC and 1 x shieldboosting (whatever it's called)

With small blaster spec 4 , assault ship 4 , surgical strike 4 and a mag field stab II my harpys T2 neutron blasters have a DMG mod of 8. somthing.
This gives you consistant damage in the region of 70-100+ per shot. Plus with the range bonus from the ship and NULL small charges you get an optimal range of around 6k , with fall off near 10k.
The only downfall with this ship is its 0 EMP resist and lack of space to fit a mag scattering amp and sufficent tackle gear.
If , like me , you want to use this ship for solo piracy you will need to drop the EMP resist for a webber , or go passive tank.
Otherwise you will find it frustrating as people either run away or orbit you too fast for your T2 blasters to get good shots on. Tea And Scones Please |

dont have tested hawk for the moment but blasters harpy are very nice. I use this setup : 4xlight neut blaster - 1xrocket launcher 1x MWD - 1x web - 1x disrupt - 1x secret :P 1x MFS - 1x istab

Rail harpy is a great support sniper..watch those intys / AF / pods go as you sit 60km off gate.

Blaster harpy does more dps than a rocket hawk. railgun harpy does more range and and more dps than a missile hawk.
There is no reason to use a hawk ;P

I use both, my missile skills are better than guns though. Both are typically underestimated though in PvP.

This harpy just absolutely fantastic at PvP, claimed loads of kills (and lots of pods) and didn't die once:

Close, but the 4th sensor booster will be stacking nerfed too much against the other three.

But the Harpy does better DPS and has better range. Its not hard to get T2 small rails.

Thats about the only thing the hawk is good for in PVP. other than that, in gangs of 20+, its all about the harpy and 150's. just like a 280 wolf.

I was wondering why missiles are so much worse then guns. You don't have to worry about optimal & tracking issues with missiles. Also you can swap missiles to adjust what resists someone has... and if someone is using ecm on you (fof).

They're aren't pathetically worse, the thing is hybrid tech 2 ammo is awesome while most tech 2 missles are rather crappy in that they're too specialized. The only exception to this is precision light missles. As you can see, a Hawk with precision lights is only setup you really see people reccomending for a Hawk, as a blaster harpy does more damage than a rocket hawk, and a rail harpy does instant damage, while a Hawk has to wait a couple seconds for its light missles to hit.
The Hawk is actually a great solo and small gang ship, because your targets wont die before you hit them like in a larger gang and its shield boost bonus is more likely to be used. It's not like the Hawk is gimped or anything, its just that the Harpy is useful a bit more often.
Sigs are overrated. |

The DPS output of guns is massively larger than that of missiles, missiles with 5-6mil in the skills will pay off... but guns with equal SP's will triple the damage. Plus they get Critical (wrecking) shots.

I have not completely tested this in the spreadsheets to confirm.. but so far my gut feeling, is the hawk dps is the worst dps of any AF out there.. even if missiles hit instantly. Taking into account flight time.. its utter poo poo bears.

I'm using a harpy with 4x Light Neutron II, Arby Rocket Launcher, Med Extender II, passive EM Hardener II, 7,5k WArpscrambler, Named MWD, 2xMAPC.
It can kill most cruisers and tanks pretty well. If you got some money left switch the EM Hardener to a sensor dampener, and put in some EM Resistance Rigs. Enemy takes longer to lock you, which takes a lot of dps away.

As soon as I could fly AFs I got myself a Hawk. Having around 5.5m in missiles and... "well I can fit guns when someone tells me where they go" in gunnery, I figured I'd fare way better in a Hawk than in a Harpy.
I was utterly wrong. After I had no to little success with the Hawk I tried the Harpy. And even with my clearly one-sided skills back then my Harpy completely outclassed my Hawk, except for tanking. And even there I usually had more fitting and more flexibility with the Harpy.
So in closing, the Hawk probably makes a good tank for missions & complexes. And it locks a bit faster, so it has some use in PvP over the Harpy. But that's about it . :(
