Hello everyone,
I'm studying social sciences and am currently working on my bachelor thesis. The working title for my thesis is "Community in the context of MMORPGs"
I would like to keep the focus on Eve Online as much as possible, but sadly I'm finding very little scientific publications on Eve, I found some good ones on gamestudies.org , tho. I'm thankful for any hint where I can find scientific publications on Eve Online that discuss community or player motivation in some way. So I dont have to write about some other MMO which should not be named.
Also I'm searching for statistical data on Corp's and Alliances. Specifically how many corps are in Eve, how big are they, how long does a character stay in one corp on an average, and stuff like that.
TL:DR Im writing my bachelor thesis, topic: Community and MMORPGs. Im searching for scientific publications on eve online. Im searching for statistical data on corps and alliances.
Thx and fly dangerous,
Taj

CCP Quant has given some presentations that probably include more statistical detail than any other public source on the matter. I was able to find several of these by searching "CCP Quant youtube" on Google.
Formatting your citation for such a source, of course, is up to you.
This book is a collection of articles with varying levels of scholarly rigor that might help in various ways.
That's all I have for you off the top of my head. Good luck.

You might also want to make contact with David Waguespack and Johanna Birnir at the University of Maryland. They have been studying some of the EVE metadata and gave a presentation at Fanfest on some of their preliminary findings. Being researchers intimate with EVE, they may have some insights for you. |

Dotlan, if properly used, is a goldmine of data that is solid enough for use in an academic fashion. Try this. But, be prepared to spend a bit of time.

Of course, the most important study to include in your thesis is where CCP proved that ganking newbies increases their retention.

How you reference youtube videos depends on your university's referencing guidelines, but it'll either be in your references or bibliography.
You could also put together a survey (survey monkey could be useful).

I would, in fact, recommend against this, for the simple reason that EVE is - while pretty damn awesome - a niche game. And scientifically speaking, a single MMO, no matter how many responses you get , is not a statistically significant amount of investigation to satisfy a Thesis, even a "mere" Bachelor's. The title you are giving your thesis implies MMOs, plural. And you will lose marks if you focus on a single game only.
Besides, you have to consider multiple community structures to get a truly significant set of results.
EVE has a specific community and style due to a combination of the mechanics provided by CCP, and the general playstyle and psyche of the game as a whole (spies, politics, backstabbing, PvP, e-honour, wars, etc etc etc).
Just try and compare that to something like a random WoW guild on a random shard server for that game.
Then do the same for a World of Tanks, or Mechwarrior Online player "clan". Then try the same for several F2P offerings, like Secret World, Lord of the Rings Online, Everquest (any of them). Or SWTOR? Do MOBAs count? What about Wildstar?
Have you defined all your assumptions, and given suitable reasons?
What about Guild Wars 2 or Black Desert Online, or Perpetuum? Something as ancient as Anarchy Online? Or Wurm Online? Does Path of Exile count? Do you focus on guilds/clans/corps/units/etc? What about wider forum communities? Server communities? Different communities of channels in EVE? Interest groups, that focus on combat, or raids, or trading? RP groups?
Do you focus on in-game resources, or out-of-game, or both? What about player-run forums, or communities like Something Awful, or Reddit? Or random external third party sites, such as FailHeap Challenge?
How does voice comms, or lack thereof impact any/all of this? Does this include community in terms of inclusion of devs/GMs/etc? Such as communication/community not just amongst players but between devs and players?
Raw numbers can be found on places like dotlan. Those will only give you a little of the story.
My advice? Don't focus on EVE alone. But make it a part of the "core" MMOs you consider (i.e. large, or leading MMOs in various genres/styles of MMO).

first of all much thx for all the reply ;)
I ordered the "Internet Spaceships Are Serious Business" Book and it looks very promising so far.
I know Dotlan only from my time in wormholes when I used it to stalk people there. From your comments it seems like you can extract the data from dotlan, is that right? Would one be able to export them to R or Stata? Any hint on how to do that. I have basic skills in stata but im clueless about programming, API's and stuff like that.
You made some very good points Jack Jomar and I would approve all fo them. I will consider two MMO's but that will be the maximum. I got about 40-60 pages for my thesis, and got alredy 20 just for theory. So yeah it will be Eve Online and that other MMO. And iI will focus on in-game resources, I know there is much more about nearly every online game then the game itself but i need to keep it somewhat tight. |

Have a google around Oxford Uni (UK) ... my Mrs did PPE there and surprisingly they had discussed the closed economy of Eve online during her course (I was very confused when she had heard of Eve as shes not a gamer) .... No idea if anyone has done any work on it but worth a google (was 9-10 years ago when she did it so might be a little dated if you do find anything) ... Hope this helps. |
